Super Smash Bros. Melee

by Mike Sklens - December 5, 2001, 5:43 pm EST

Mike S starts his romp the rough and tumble world of the Smash Bros, what does he think so far?

I hold Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo 64 on the highest of pedestals. The game, to me, was the best game on the system, and easily one best games of all time. The very moment I heard that Super Smash Bros Melee was going to exist, I just about flipped my lid. I was so supremely excited.

So, now after all the months of waiting I finally own the sequel to the game I call my favorite game of all time. Well folks, it would seem that I have a new favorite game of all time. Super Smash Bros Melee is all that and much much more. Frankly, I really would have been 100% if they just took Smash Bros 64 and gave it a graphical remake. But HAL and Nintendo went all out for this epic title.

I’ve had the title and have been able to play it for about a day now. There is so much stuff in this game it’s amazing. First off, characters. I love them, all of them. The models are fantastic, and the animation is even better than that. I’ve already unlocked six of them so far. I’d have to say that my favorite character so far is Marth.

The Gameplay in melee is a good bit faster than it was in the 64 version. It took me a while to get used to the new controls but after a day of playing I’d say I’m quite good at them (particularly with Marth). This game is really deep to. But I really don’t see why so many people are so crazy over the new Adventure Mode. To me, it’s not really that much. It’s far too similar to Classic mode to be praised the way it is. But that doesn’t really matter that much to me, because as far as I am concerned the single player mode is just a gateway to MORE stuff to use in the multiplayer mode. Another point of interest is the sound. The sound effects are crisp and the background music is fantastic, especially in the Fountain of Dreams and Onett levels.

To sum it up, Super Smash Bros Melee is a MUST OWN title. There is only one exception to this rule. If you truly did not like the first one (all 3 of you), you probably won’t like this one. But if you liked or never played the first, you NEED this title.
