Sonic Advance

by Justin Wood - September 10, 2001, 8:30 pm EDT

Yesterday Justin gave us his thoughts on Sonic's first outing on the GameCube. Today it's time for some GBA lovin'. What did he think of Sonic's latest 2D adventure?

Having played Sonic Adventure 2 on the GameCube the day before, the reality of playing a Sonic game on a Nintendo system had sunk in. It's a reality that I think we will all enjoy.

The first things you will notice when you start up Sonic Advance are the large characters and their fresh new looks. Sonic is much larger than he was in his Genesis and Sega CD games, and he looks more like he does in the latest 2-D Sonic artwork being published by Sega. I really fell in love with the slightly updated character designs.

The backgrounds remind me of Sonic’s classic Genesis days, only now with enhanced graphics and brighter colors. The slightly new look for Sonic is refreshing, and I’m glad to see Sonic finally make a return in 2 dimensions.

Of course Tails, Knuckles, and Amy join Sonic as playable characters in an attempt to free the enslaved animals and defeat Dr. Robotnik yet again. Sonic Advance plays, as you would expect if you remember the Genesis games – fast and furious. This game is all about speed!

Though this was not the most challenging game I’ve ever played, it was however one of the most fun games I’ve played in a long time. It's great to see make a return to his 2-D, side scrolling roots. Thanks to Nintendo’s GBA and titles like Sonic Advance, it looks like 2-D gaming will make a strong and triumphant return.
