In the future, robots have guns.

The Wii U version of Ghost Recon Online has been in development for approximately four months. The demo on the show floor featured a small single player map filled with robotic drones that needed to be destroyed.

Before the action begins you first select your weapon on the Wii U controller's touch screen. Putting a finger on a weapon  and making a swiping up motion will equip it.

The main controls will be very familiar to anyone who has played a dual analog stick shooter. Players move and strafe with the left circle pad, and use the right pad to look around and aim their gun. The ZR trigger shoots and ZL reloads. To take cover behind an object press the B button and then jump over an object with the A button. The X button changes the character's stance and Y enables a special ability (one character can do a cool slide move).

The controls worked fine and it was easy to traverse the short level which took place in a barren city landscape. There wasn't much to do except shoot at the occasional drone and run around.

The Wii U Controller can be used as a map in the game. Utilizing the gyroscope you can rotate the map. You can also touch a point on the map to create a marker point which can then immediately be seen on the TV screen.  In addition, you can use the Wii U Controller to control your own drone. You had the choice of issuing it commands and could see what it was looking at on touch screen. You could even change the area it was gazing at by dragging your finger.

The graphics seemed pretty similar to other warfare shooters and the frame rate was hovering in 30fps range. The representative made it clear that the game was still very early in development and they are hoping to greatly improve the graphics and frame rate.

Overall, it was a cool little demo, but it was definitely very early and mainly just giving a small glimpse of what is possible with the system.

It looks good so far! I hope they add pointer control, but they probably won't.

I love the functionality added by the new controller and screen.  Truly, more compelling gaming experiences will be made viable through this hardware.
