Super Smash Bros. Melee

by Joe Fletcher - August 23, 2001, 2:46 pm EDT

Joe Fletcher got a chance to try Super Smash Brothers Melee at the press conference and here are the new changes.

Super Smash Brothers hasn't really gone through any real cosmetic changes since the last time at E3. The graphics are still very detailed and fluid, but they haven't really seemed to have any major improvements.

The gameplay itself has been majorly sped up over the E3 version however, seeming to almost be about twice as fast as the original Smash Bros. The motions of the characters also seem to have been improved with more frames of animation per attack. The attacks as well don't have the pause before and after them that the N64 version had, which speeds up gameplay again.

The only new characters available to play over the E3 version were the Ice Climber(s) and Peach. The Ice Climbers offer an interesting brand of gameplay style, with 2 characters being controlled by the same controller. The second character controls with a little bit of lag, which results in both almost seeming to be controlled on their own. Only one of the Ice Climbers can be damaged, but both can be hit, which makes others try to remember which one of the characters is the "real" one. The game definitely got more hectic when 3 Ice Climbers were chosen out of 4 players. Even with all the onscreen commotion of 7 characters, there wasn't a hint of slowdown to be seen.

As for Peach, she seemed to play about how you would think she would. She can float for a double jump, flies off the platform at the slightest hint of a Smash, and uses Toad as a chemical weapon. That and she swings a mean frying pan.

All in all, the game is a marked improvement over the old one, with faster paced gameplay, more characters, and more fun to be had all around. Exactly what you'd want out a game sequel, and sure to keep all those Smash Brothers fanatics glued to their sets for hundreds of hours.
