Cobra Light

by Michael Cole - June 11, 2001, 3:50 pm EDT

TYP just got back from EB with a shiny new Cobra light for his GBA. Come learn from his experience....

From when I first heard about the Cobra light, I was intrigued by the idea of the mirror approach. The Cobra light is designed in pieces, and it can be dismantled when not being used. There is also a pass-through port. Another smart feature is the ON-OFF switch: you don't have to unplug the light to turn it off.

So, after a 30 minute drive back home from the EB store, (there are none near me, and I just had to do that trade 4 GB games deal) I unopened my Cobra package. But, much to my surprise, I found that the ring hinge where the "neck" bends down to cover the GBA (as well as connect it to the base) had come off somehow! I tried to put it back on its turning bar, but with little force, the tiny plastic ring broke into a semicircle and a curved strip of plastic.

So I thought, "Hm, this is either a really bad design, or some sort of defect." I decided I may as well try the light itself to see how well it lights up the screen before returning it. Unfortunately, the plug was also defective, as it wouldn't fit into the system! Upon further inspection, I noticed that the port was shoddily made: you can see where the wires were welded to the plug. Quite annoying when you are trying to evaluate a GBA light....

From my experience, I would state that this light is one you should steer clear of. Two defects in a single unit is absurd. And when I looked at an unopened box back at the store, both the employee and I agreed that it was a shoddy design. In fact, he asked me NOT to buy that product. LOL!!!
