Worm Light Plus

Okay, the GBA obviously doesn't have a backlight and under poor lighting conditions, you are going to need a light. Does Nyko's Worm Light Plus make the GBA world a brighter place?

I am a very big fan of the original Worm Light for the Game Boy, and was eagerly awaiting Nyko's successor...the Worm Light Plus.

At first glance, the light looks a little larger than the original Worm Light. It still plugs in the same spot you would plug a link cable, but contains a pass through slot so you can still link up for multiplayer. The coil is a little sturdier, and the lamp is a little larger than its predecessor.

It was time to turn out the lights, and see how this works. I tested the light with three games: Pinobee, F-Zero, and Tony Hawk 2. With all three of the games the Worm Light Plus only lit up a portion of the screen. I would say it’s kind of a diamond shaped beam that fills probably 60% of the screen. Due to the fact that the Worm Light Plus only lights up part of the screen, you literally have to tilt the GBA around to light up the area that’s needed. With the games I played with, it was a little tricky to say the least. There’s things that aren’t being lit up that I can’t see, and it’s hindering gameplay considerably. Not only that, but you have to avoid the bulb too.

If you have a GBA, you're probably already used to the glare you'll get off the screen if you play with a bright lamp. Basically a reflection of the light source on your screen. If you don’t angle the GBA just right, it will hinder your view. The Nyko Worm Light Plus also suffers from this problem. There’s a looming reflection of the bulb on your screen. And it’s bright.

In comparison to the original worm light on the Game Boy, the Worm Light Plus doesn’t work as well. The light is bright, but it doesn't light up everything that needs to be. Due to the amount of effort needed to see the action, I would recommend waiting for Nyko’s UFO light, or check out what else is out there.
