On the other side of the screen, it all looks so easy.
To coincide with the release of the new Tron film, Disney and n-space are bringing Tron Evolution: Battle Grids to Wii. From the demo I saw at E3, it looks like the game will have a solid framework with three different modes. Light cycle race, light cycle arena, and a vehicular combat arena using four-wheeled tank-looking trucks that a passerby said reminded them of Twisted Metal.
The game is controlled with just the Wii Remote, and it is held on its side like an NES controller. You tilt left and right to steer your vehicle, and you can jump with an upward flick of the Wii Remote. For those unfamiliar with Tron, the light cycles you drive have a trail that comes out the back that can damage opponents if they run into them. The jump comes in handy when you try to avoid them, but when you jump, you leave a trail as well. You also have the option of turning 90 degrees on a dime by pressing left or right on the D-pad, which comes in handy when your dodging your rivals.
The light cycle arenas were focused around getting your opponents to run into your trail, while the arena with the bigger vehicles was focused more on combat and shooting your opponents down with missiles or placing land mines. The races had a good sense of speed, and featured visuals reminiscent of F-Zero.
I didn't get to see any of the game's main mode, but the basic gameplay is quite fun. Hopefully the rest of the project will come together into a nice, full package when it comes out later this year.
