I cannot believe this is still a thing.

Hey, I don’t know if you’ve heard, but Radio Free Nintendo is about to have its 1000th episode.

Writing the article detailing our plans has proven to be a challenging and deeply humbling experience. It's also been a little embarrassing, and I can’t quite put my finger on the cause.

The show is over 20 years old, meaning at least a few listeners are younger than the podcast itself. I’ve now been the “host” for over half of this run, and while the job basically just means I introduce everyone and write the article, that thought alone hits me with an emotion I can’t quite place. Wistful surrealism is a phrase. It cannot possibly be true; yet, it is.

As such, it’s tough to put into words what the show means to me personally. I have made about a dozen aborted attempts to introduce our Episode 1000 plans.

Here are some stats:

  • 50% feature a Horace Showpony reference (this counts)
  • 75% imply that Jon Lindemann, my long-time cohost, will miss some or all of the show
  • Two are unfinished because I decided the tone was too serious
  • Three are unfinished because I decided the tone was too self-deprecating
  • One was written as an invitation for a “corporate event” by J&J Inc., a division of Iasion AI Partners.

I am considering revisiting that last concept at a future date.

If you’re curious, I went with Iasion because Greek didn’t have a J, it’s a fairly recent innovation. Hence, I used the name Iasion for our pretentious-sounding AI venture.

I am counting on investors not knowing that Iasion was murdered by Zeus because he had sex with Demeter at a party.

This is wildly off track. I know almost all the articles I write end up this way, but let’s land this plane before I have to start over yet again.

Saturday, November 14 at 10 PM UTC Radio Free Nintendo will record Episode 1000 LIVE. We ask you to join us if you can. The mechanics are still under investigation. Tradition suggests I use Icecast, but it is 2026. Raise your hand if you’ve used Icecast in the last decade.

I suspect there are precious few hands in the air.

I want accessing the show to be simple, and behind as few walls as possible. The NWR Discord is a confirmed host. A Discord Stage channel will be open for you to listen. I will provide details on other possible routes if and when they develop.

Our plan is to assemble as many of our former cohosts as we can get. We have two questions for them to answer:

  1. What event from your time on RFN would you like to highlight? This could be a news story, an event you attended, some element of RFN history, or even a game that you thought particularly important. RFN is a living testament to two decades of Nintendo's history. It’s worth exploring.
  2. What RetroActive would you highlight from your run on the show (if applicable).

I plan to use their answers to cut together a supplemental episode of excerpts from the relevant podcasts. Expect that to come a few weeks later.

You can also participate in this by sending your suggestions to the RFN email alias. I assume at this point you are keenly aware of it, but this link will also provide. I am a provider.

What I do not desire to do is revive the telethon. I am proud, humbled, and slightly embarrassed by RFN’s longevity but that does not mean we need to replicate this marathon. I am proud of the money we raised, but these were absolute slogs. We are going to go for about four hours, not half a day.

This is plenty. I am old. My back hurts. I can no longer do a fourteen hour show.

That does not mean you should not send us money. We appreciate money, and to be entirely honest we appreciate it more when it helps people who need it. To that effect, we are going to revive the charity aspect in a small way.

Things right now feel bad, and funds for life-saving organizations are thin. In an effort to do even the smallest part, and in recognition of our Telethon traditions, we're using Tiltify to fundraise for Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières Emergency Relief 2026 Fund.

Our goal is modest: $1 per numbered episode. $1000 is enough to cover over 4,000 emergency rations for those in need, or cure five patients of tuberculosis. Give us a hand, wont you?

For those of you unaccustomed to reading, here is the summary:

Who: RFN hosts of past and present - full details to come
What: Radio Free Nintendo Episode 1000 Live show
Where: The NWR Discord! (and maybe more)
When: Saturday, November 14 at 10 PM UTC
Why: I mean, that’s just kind of a hurtful question.
How: The Internet.

We thank those of you who have listened to this thing that we do. We are not the most “easy listening” Nintendo podcast on Earth. Certainly, if you just want Nintendo content delivered to your ears there are many options available. So thank you for choosing this one. That means you've been subjected to weekly references to: 80s action films, weird 90s mascots, forty minutes spent breaking down the impact of the credit crunch on imports of Talking Flower, and other nonsense. We’re still doing this because of you. And this episode is for you.

I hope you enjoy it.

Don't worry if you can't make it. We will release this as an episode on Sunday or Monday following the show.
