Staff Sez: E3 Games We Didn't See Coming

E3 ain't over yet, but staffers have some early picks on the games or experiences that took them by surprise!

Two days into E3 and already there's been so many reveals and surprises, experiences and demos. There's always hype before the event and there's always hype after, but there were also surprises: games that nobody predicted, games that flew under the radar, games that we never expected to turn out the way they did! The Expo isn't even over yet, but already NWR staffers have examples of times when they were taken completely by surprise!

Carmine "Really Wants to Play Star Wars" Red

I was previously very much "meh" about Hyrule Warriors, but after seeing the gameplay I did a complete 180 because it became clear to me that the title really should've been "Zelda: Battlefront!"

Zachary "Add Shantae to Smash Bros." Miller

Shantae 3 actually getting a release window. You know, after missing the first one, which honestly wasn't very broad (last quarter of 2013 but WHATEVER).

But the fact that we still don't have an actual release date? Something more specific than "summer 2014?"

Not bitter at all.

Bryan "Kirby! Kirby! Kirby!" Rose

I was not expecting a new Kirby game so soon. I just finished Kirby Triple Deluxe, after all! But this won't be coming out until 2015 it seems, so there's plenty of time to start wanting some more Kirby in my life.

Nicholas "Assist Trophy" Bray

Easily Splatoon, then probably Star Fox and Captain Toad.

Addison "Custom Level" Webb

I thought all of the Mario Maker pictures were fake until it was announced; the pictures looked Photoshopped.  I don't think any of us were expecting a new Kirby game so soon.

J.P. "Ready to Launch" Corbran

Personally, even if Nintendo didn't have anything else to show, I'd have declared that they won E3 purely by (finally) not only announcing a new Star Fox, but one that looks to be made internally this time. Last time EAD made a Star Fox game it was one of my all-time favorite games, so I have high hopes for this one.

Clay "I'll Play It on 3DS" Johnson

Code Name: STEAM certainly turned out to be a different game than I was picturing, and it seems to have a lot of interesting and promising elements. Silver Age comics, steampunk, Honest Abe, and Intelligent Systems? Yes, please.

Justin "The Captain" Baker

Captain Toad was totally out of left field for me. My favorite part of my favorite game last year being turned into its own game? Yes, please!

Guillaume "I Like Squid Girls" Veillette

Captain Toad and a sequel to Kirby's Canvas Curse on Wii U were things I've actually said I wanted, yet never expected to get. I can't think of another instance where my desires were so specifically met by Nintendo. It's kind of unbelievable!

Splatoon also managed to put a Nintendo twist on the online shooter genre in a way I never expected. I think most people thought that if Nintendo would ever try their hand in this genre, it would be with non-violent paintball. But who saw "cute squid girls swimming in ink" coming!?

Alex "Watched the Trailer Frame-by-Frame" Culafi

I expected the worst from Zelda and got the best. What more could one ask for?

Curtis "Stop Motion" Bonds

I definitely didn't see a sequel to Canvas Curse coming, and in amazing-looking claymation no doubt. Splatoon also looks like a blast, too.

E3 isn't quite over yet; who knows whether more surprises are just around the corner? Do you have any personal picks for the game that most surprised you in the show so far?

So after the first day of E3, there were tons of "who won E3" articles coming out. Nintendo hadn't presented yet, but was clearly not even in then running. I may be biased, but that early dismissal sure seems like a bad idea in retrospect. Nintendo had a very strong show with something for (nearly) everyone.

There were games I didn't see coming, but on a bigger scale I didn't see Nintendo offering nearly as compelling an experience as they did..

So pretty much every new game Nintendo unveiled that wasn't Zelda and even then, the open-world announcement took everyone by surprise. Perhaps someone predicted a Kirby game, but they're a liar-liar-pants-on-fire if they acted like they said it'd be a sequel to Canvas Curse.

Most surprising for me was either Splatoon or Code Name: STEAM. Not terribly excited about the latter as it isn't my type of game, but Nintendo managed to get me excited for a shooter.

Splatoon looks exactly like the kind of shooter I want to play- something with character and an interesting mechanic that ties the whole thing together. I really like the concept and I can't wait to see more.

Steam looks great, too. It's the strategy game I never knew I wanted.

And of course, Zelda is immensely exciting. Overall, I was very pleased with their lineup this year, but again, the 2015 date as hard to swallow.
