After playing through Yoshi's New Island, it is kind of refreshing to go back to the game that started it all. The GBA remake of the beloved SNES classic has found its way to the Wii U. Thanks to the filtering options and added lighting for these Virtual Console titles, this is one version I can fully recommend.

What can't I say about this title that hasn't been said before? The levels in this game are a blast and the bosses you encounter are filled with creativity. The platforming has such a nice pace to it, even if the game is a bit easy at times. What makes Yoshi's Island tick so well is that it is not as straightforward as a regular Mario game. You go up and down and find secrets all over the place. It is a platforming game with a thinking cap on. The many collectibles make you want to come back for more, as surprises wait for those who go out of their way to find them. There are unlockable challenges and levels that give you more stuff to do and keep you entertained. I had the biggest smile on my face while playing through this game again.

The cheerful tunes make that smile even bigger in the roughly eight hours that this adventure lasts. There is also the Mario Bros. game, which all versions of the Super Mario Advance series came with. I had to get used to playing it on the Wii U GamePad somewhat, as it handles slightly different from the Game Boy Advance or a SNES controller. In particular playing it with the Control Stick felt a bit off, though I got used to it in time. The colorful world of Yoshi's Island awaits your return and believe me, that is not a bad thing in the slightest.
