The Cinematic Mario Brothers Go Digital

The Super Mario Bros. film makes its way onto DVD just in time for its tenth anniversary

On May 28th, 1993, Walt Disney-owned Buena Vista Pictures released a film loosely based on the Super Mario Bros. video games.  With a then sizable 42 million dollar budget, the movie was created to be a tent-pole picture for the studios.  Due to poor reviews from critics and bad word of mouth from fans upset that the film wasn't faithful to the Mario Bros. saga, the movie quickly left theaters -- earning less than half its budget.

Ten years later, Disney has had time to lick its wounds, and the studio is finally releasing the picture on DVD.  For an MSRP of $9.99, and stores taking pre-orders for less than $7.00, Mario completionists can add the movie to their collection without taking a big hit to their pocketbooks.

In the film, plumber brothers Mario Mario (Bob Hoskins) and Luigi Mario (Jon Leguizamo) are pulled into an alternative dimension where they attempt to save Princess Daisy (Samantha Mathis) from the evil King Koopa (Dennis Hopper).  The Mario Brothers soon realize that they must save the world from Koopa's diabolical plan, in addition to rescuing the princess.  Will the heroic plumbers succeed in their mission?  Find out on June 3rd.

Thanks to Nintega from the PGC forums for the tip!

I saw the movie several years back...It was hilarious in a "how stupid is this" kind of way. Like the fat lady and the shoe jetpacks...and how Yoshi was a little T-Rex. And who was that at the very end of the movie? Looked like someone from NCL. I don't remember who. Was it Miyamoto, or Yamauchi? The guy spoke good English, so I'm guessing he was an actor.

That was exactly the site I was subtly referring to in my article.

Glad somebody caught it.

I agree completely. I love Spirits Within. It doesn't really compare to stories like FFX or FF6, but it's a great movie. Somehow, I've always liked the Mario Bros. movie. It doesn't seem like Mario at all, but it's a good movie IMO.

I recorded it on tape a long time ago... I think I'll buy the DVD someday.

I actually lost my first job due to this movie. I called off to go see it, I was so excited but someone saw me somewhere and told my boss that I really wasn't sick. What a payback! Hey for $10 it's worth adding to the collection I guess.

Seriously...where is The Wizard?  As silly as I'm sure it was, I want to see it again!
