PREVIEWS: Call of Duty: World at War

Coming off the heels of n-Space's first DS Call of Duty, the sequel takes the series to its next logical step: online.

 The previous DS Call of Duty game, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, was a great attempt at a first person shooter on the system but unfortunately http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/reviewArt.cfm?artid=14860" target="new">wasn't perfect. Featuring the same mixture of stylus and d-pad control the prior entry had, n-Space's sophomore effort with the series, Call of Duty: World at War, sets out to correct the prior game's shortcomings and build upon the solid base.    


Producer of the Call of Duty series, Noah Heller, said that n-Space "was given all the assets (of the console versions) and told to make a good game," and he feels they executed that order. Call of Duty features a robust set of improvements and features including four-player online multiplayer, online leaderboards, various touch-screen mini-games, and three campaigns including one exclusive to the DS.    


The single-player campaign will include both the American and Russian campaigns similar to their console counterparts, while featuring the same full voice-acting with Kiefer Sutherland and Gary Oldman as well. An exclusive British campaign featuring touch screen-controlled parachute levels has also been added specifically for the DS release. The gritty nature of the console release has also been maintained, giving the game the same aura as its big screen brothers.    


In addition to the parachute levels, there are also many other touch-screen mini-games spread across the game that are used to heal allies and provide artillery support. One of the most intriguing touch-screen mini-games is the Morse code mini-game which involves precise tapping of Morse code to relay important messages.    


Call of Duty: World at War's biggest addition, however, is the without a doubt the online component. In addition to the ten maps and game types such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Hunter/Prey, World at War will also feature online leaderboards that will be viewable on the DS and on a website that will be launched shortly after the game is released.    


Call of Duty: World at War will be available for DS this fall.
