IMPRESSIONS: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time
« on: May 16, 2003, 11:32:19 AM »
Take a glimpse into the future of action-adventure games.

Prince of Persia is down on the show floor at Ubi Soft’s booth here at E3. The game’s full title is Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. You see, the Sands of Time have scattered and our namesake prince has to get it back.

He’s a very acrobatic prince too. He can run up and across walls and swing all over the place. The combat is a bit dry at the moment, but it should expand with further development. Enemies are in control of the Sands of Time and the prince must destroy them in order to get the sand back. After dealing enough damage to the baddies, the prince must execute a finishing move with his magic sword in order to retrieve the Sands of Time. Gathering the sand also replenishes the sand you use in the game to control time.

Speaking of time control, it’s really cool. Missing a critical jump or maneuver is no problem at all. Pressing the L button will rewind a short amount of time that just occurred so you can try all over again. You only get a certain number of these rewinds though, so you can’t screw up too often. If you want to dispatch a room full of monsters really quickly, fast forwarding will let you blitz all over the place and take out everything. If you’re outnumbered, you can do a special freeze attack that will stop an enemy in their tracks, sometimes leaving them floating in mid-air.

Prince of Persia has a fast pace with the gameplay constantly moving between platforming elements and combat. It’s a total blast to play and has a nice “wow factor" when you bust out the time control abilities. Fans of action-adventure titles are going to be very pleased with Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time.
