Miyamoto Says Using Two Wii U Controllers May Be Possible
« on: June 09, 2011, 06:48:13 PM »

The company is still researching whether the technology would allow it.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/26722

Shigeru Miyamoto says that Nintendo is looking into the possibility of using two of the new Wii U controllers simultaneously.

The initial idea was for one controller per system, and the company felt it would be more convenient for people to use their 3DS systems when a multiplayer game called for multiple screen controllers. However, Miyamoto said that Nintendo are in the process of: "Research about if someone brings their controller to their friends house and they want to play together on Wii U to whether or not something like that would be possible."

Of course they think it would be better to use a 3DS, they get more profit from 3DS sales than they would from extra screen controller sales. Oh well, it's at least good that they are considering adding support for another screen controller, and hopefully some developers convince them to do so.

It looks like all the complaining is paying off. If no one had complained Nintendo would have went forward with the one controller per system concept, so it shows that complaining can and does bring results. So instead of bashing Ian and the others on here who complain you should all be applauding them because they are speaking out and helping to make things better off for everyone of us by bringing these things to Nintendo's attention. Bottom line is sometimes it pays to complain.

ETA: Now, if we can just put enough pressure on them to change the name maybe they will crack on that too....

This quote was a little nuts.  Have they not done this research yet?  But either way, I'm glad they know that that's what we want.  Hopefully the research will find more controllers and/or 3dss will work together and that it would be awesome!

Well, lets ask my wallet

Me: Hey wallet, do you feel it is more convenient to use a 3DS for multi-player
Wallet: Do you even own a 3DS?
Me: No.... it cost too much. It's 250 dol..
Wallet: TWO HUNDRED AND FIFTY DOLLARS SO A FRIEND A CAN PLAY TOO!!!
Me: Well... miyamoto said it would be more convenient....
Wallet: Well is this miyamoto gonna spot you that $250!? Because it ain't coming from me...
Me: .... :-[

The complaining has nothing to do with it (it never does). And Miyamoto-san didn't just make it up. They were already looking into this:

http://kotaku.com/5809706/nintendo-looking-into-games-that-support-two-new-controllers

But if you already have a 3DS it will be more convenient, not to say cheaper. If you don't it won't of course. Duh.

Not to mention that the 3DS only has one analog stick/nub/slider/whatever so that might be an issue for certain games.

I'll say it again: this was incredibly short sighted even for Nintendo.

I can see how it would be impractical to render out four screens at full resolution (plus the TV), but it would seem simple to lower the quality when more than one person is playing.

I'm a little unclear over the "may be possible" part. They should have built the system from the beginning to be able to use 2 tablet controllers. This shouldn't be something that they're only considering now. How do they figure this wouldn't be the 1st thing that people inquire about? Ridic!

'Course it's always possible that when we find out how costly an extra new controller will be we'll all decide a 3DS is the better buy.

Not as long as a 3DS is still $250.

The controller could be $150, and the 3DS may have taken a drop by then - probably 18 months from now.

You're kidding yourself if you think the controller could be anywhere near $150. The raw parts probably come to around $40. Nintendo could sell it for as little as $60 and still make a profit. I doubt they'd sell it for $60, but they could if we ask nicely with a cherry on top.

Hee - my mushroom caps might make you feel funny. But yes, I hope y'all are right there.

3DS may well come down in price after a bit though with Sony's really aggressive pricing of Vita. In fact a bit of price war may be good for us all!

It seems even internally the 3DS price is biting Nintendo.

That being said we didn't do it for the GBA and it was cheaper and a LOT more people had it.

I think the difference from Cube/GBA will be:
a) You needed an extra piece of equipment to use GBA as a controller (a small one true, but it made the whole thing more cumbersome, especially as you needed a connector for each GBA).
b) You had to either have a GBA or not play the game in that mode. With at least one extra New Controller (when does it get a name) as a possibility, they may avoid this problem.
Let's hope, anyways!

I hope they allow at least two Wii U controllers. I wouldn't mind sacrificing visual fidelity to have some Wii U Four Swords with four Wii U controllers.

I don't get that from this. I read the full transcript of the interview in the process of writing the article, and it seemed more like Nintendo saw it as being just one per console, and designed the tech with that in mind, but then people brought up the idea of bringing one from a friend's house, and so Nintendo's looking into it to see if that could work.

Someone had to ask them if they could use more than one controller per console? :\

My guess is that they were designing with performance in mind first, shooting for high quality, lagless wireless video to the controller. They achieved that with one controller, from all accounts. But maybe they were shooting too high, and now they're re-evaluating if maybe aiming for such high graphics on the controller screen is worth having only one controller, and if so, what they can redesign in the tech to fix that.
