Radio Free Nintendo - Episode 22

The podcasters ruminate on Clover Studios disbanding, Sega vs. Nintendo, and the great meaningless Wii Pre-Order debacle.

That game is Okami, btw. Between the time we recorded this cast and the day I'm posting this cast, I bought Okami and must say that everything Jonny says here is absolutely true. We got on the topic of Okami because of Clover Studio disbanding, which is absolute heartbreak to Karl. Stan and Jonny declare Sega lame while Evan and Karl furiously fume as fanboys often do. We also converse about Wii Pre-Orders just long enough to declare them dumb (hope we all get Wiis on launch day, otherwise we are turds).

This week's podcast was masterfully edited by Stan Ferguson. I point this out because his AAC version is bound to include funny pictures once it is played in iTunes. So I recommend heartily to all of you! Take advantage of all the work he put into this cast and listen to it in iTunes.

As you said I'm going to laugh if you don't get one.

Look, like I said, if someone is saying to me "Here, take $10,000" or "Ok, take this coin, flip it, if you get the side you call? I'll give you $10,000" I'm taking the free 10K! The point? What the bloody hell is wrong with pre-ordering the system? Seriously, maybe I don't want to go to a store launch day with a 90+% chance of finding a system? What if I want that 99.9% chance? Do I think you all are stupid for not pre-ordering? Of course not, that's your choice. But don't try to make people who did come off as paranoid and/or stupid, that's just plain bullheadish. As I said in the pre-order thread though, what the hell is the problem with preordering? If you know you're going to get it, why not make sure you get it?

I'm not making fun of anyone who preorders a Wii, especially if you already have tons of store credit at a mall store -- might as well use it.  I will make fun of people who stood in line for hours to place the preorder, or are now freaking out because they're worried they won't get a system.

Furthermore, a preorder is not a guarantee that you will get a system, which I'm sure the store employee told you at point of sale.

Mainly, I'm making fun of GameStop for artificially creating hysteria over a system that will be widely available on launch day, UNLIKE the PS3.  In the case of Wii, launch hysteria serves GameStop more than it serves Nintendo (and it certainly doesn't serve the consumer).  GameStop stirs fans into a frenzy, fans obsessively call or visit the stores to ask about availability, and GameStop has that many more chances to sell you a discount card, Game Informer subscription, and overpriced guidebooks to easy games.  By taking preorders, the only thing really accomplished is that they have secured a sale that could have gone to a competing retail chain.

They are essentially trying to sell you peace of mind, which is an intangible that cannot really be sold or bought.  The preorder slip, in a situation of excess launch shipments, is essentially worthless to the consumer.  But if it makes you feel better, please ignore me.

It's the bag of stuff I want.

If it's all paid off, then they literally hand you a paper bag and you leave. No question of which games, how many controllers, etc.

Call me obsessive, but I have time to kill right now. When the Wii launches, I will no doubt want to be able to play it AS FAST AS HUMANLY POSSIBLE and if that means waiting in line now instead of waiting in line on the 19th, so be it.

I still think the Wii has a chance of being bigger than anyone here suspects, but all I REALLY care about is getting it FAST.

You know I think Jonnyboy said something... I must be mistaken...

Though if he did say something.  I like my piece of mind thank you very much.  I called around and it was a whole 30 minute affair.  20 of it was driving and its only 3 miles away... Stupid city layout...

Then why did you pre-order at a store that will likely open nine or ten hours later than many other retail chains?  (Actually, I know why -- it's because you had tons of store credit there.  But the downside is that you probably won't be able to get it at midnight.)

D'oh, was at work so it wasn't really an option (try listening to a podcast between phone calls without going insane). I'll listen to it now, though, as I just got home and logged on.

EDIT: Yeah, you mentioned me to mock my decision to preorder. :P

They'll be doing a midnight launch, and since we know a person who works there, I'm hoping to walk away with my Wii a bit earlier.

I'm rational now, but I grow rapidly less rational with each passing day to the launch until, the night of, I'd probably be waiting outside Wal-mart like everyone else in the hopes of getting one even though I already have one on reserve...

A console launch is like the full moon of the "werefanboy".

If I aimed to be a forum troll, then sure.

But I prefer being in the discussions, not listening to them.

Plus, I say things in MY podcasts which would make your average god-fearing citizen's ears bleed. I understand you guys made sure to keep the explicit tag off of yours for a broader audience, but I find it more fun to be able to drop jokes which offend people who previously considered themselves unoffendable.

As for the contest, I just badly want to know if I got a "What the F*CK!?" from everyone who listened to my entry for the first time.

Just WHY do you mock the people that pre-ordered the Wii?

If they pre-ordered because they wanted to make sure they got a console at launch or just because they want to play it ASAP, then FINE. It was their decision, and I think they shouldn't be mocked.

Second, you guys are SERIOUSLY understimating the Wii. While I do believe the Wii will not be sold out after launch I don't agree with the notion that the Wii will not be a hot item this Christmas.

Like S_B has stated before, the pre-hype for the Wii has been really surprising. People who have no idea what the Wii is suddenly want to play it.

HOWEVER, I do give you guys credit on the fact that the Wii will not be the Tickle Me Elmo and that's because of the price. Usually toys are more affordable than videogame consoles. Toys are also advertise more often than games. So the younger mindset are likely to go for a Tickle me Elmo than a videogame console. Another problem the Wii has is the price of the full controller. I mean, 60 bucks for ONE controller. Families with multiple children will definitely feel it, hurting the Wii's chances of being EXTREMELY popular. But again, that doesn't mean that the Wii doesn't have the potential of being a really, really hot item this Christmas.

Again, you guys are seriously understimating the Wii and no, the people that pre-ordered the Wii are not stupid.

If Nintendo sells one million Wii systems, it will be a very hot seller this holiday season.  If Nintendo sells four million Wii systems by the end of the year, it will be one of the fastest selling consumer products ever released.  I think one of those will actually happen.

Preordering means three things:

1. Speed
2. Convenience
3. Assurance

I'm not as concerned with 3 as I am with 1 and 2.

Preordering isn't an act driven by fear so much as a desire to get the Wii home ASAP.

Also, though my situation is unique in this case: I have store credit and I know a few GS employees to the point where I could very likely walk away with my Wii earlier.

Preordering means one more thing:  if there are enough preorders Nintendo will take it as a good sign and might step up productiion.  Then Jonnyboy will be more likely to get a Wii on launch day without a reserve (and therefore more likely to continue to make fun of those of us who preordered).

It's a vicious cycle, vudu.

I can only speak for myself, but I definitely wasn't mocking anyone who pre-ordered a Wii. Some people would rather get it over with now than spend the extra 10 or so minutes doing it on launch day or shortly afterwards, and that's fine. The point that I (along with the rest of us, I think) was trying to get across is that the Wii launch isn't going to be like the 360 launch, or even the GameCube launch - there's no real necessity to pre-order, and those who opt out of doing so probably won't have to brave harsh lines or limited supply.

I might be wrong - it wouldn't be the first time - but based on what I've seen and heard so far, I just can't see the Wii being sold out in excess come November/December.

What are the chances of you getting colon cancer sometime during your life?  About 7%, you say?  The odds are in your favor.  Does this mean you're going to risk it and not get a screening when you are age appropiate?
