Time to destroy viruses the classic way!

Dr. Mario is a game that is near and dear to my heart and I played it a lot on a variety of platforms. I’ve gotten a lot of mileage out of the DSiWare entry and the recently released Dr. Luigi on the Wii U. Now the version that started it all has made its way to the Wii U Virtual Console and it is still quite an enjoyable affair.

In this puzzle game, you make lines consisting of four or more of the same color pills to score a good amount of points. Preferably one of the viruses is in said line as it will bring you closer to completion of the level. You will have to destroy all viruses before you can move on to a new level and see an even bigger challenge ahead. It is a concept that is still enjoyable and works quite well, though this version does have some limited appeal. You can select various difficulty settings and set the speed of your play-through, but beyond that it is just completing level after level until you are bored of it. In the multiplayer, you can duke it out against a friend and see who can destroy the viruses on screen more quickly. This still proves to be quite fun and with each person playing with a Wii Remote held in the NES style, there is nothing that can beat it.

If you are not really interested in paying the hefty price for Dr. Luigi and want a no nonsense experience on the console, then the classic Dr. Mario is not a bad choice. There are a limited amount of game modes there, but at the end of the day, you are still getting the base game to consume until the end of time. There is, however, an argument that you can opt for having a nicer and cleaner version of the same game with other software.
