Reggie Speaks on the 'Technical Divide'
« on: May 09, 2007, 08:29:14 AM »
NOA's president comes out of hiding to editorialize about the Wii's technological position.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=13435

Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime, who has been nowhere to be seen for quite some time, has a special article up at Cnet explaining the reasons behind Nintendo's positioning of the Wii.  Most of what he says is the usual stuff, like how the game industry needs to broaden its horizon or how a company can appease its core audience while at the same time getting new consumers jump on board.

This time around, however, Fils-Aime provides some real-world examples.  Citing the advent of the breakfast cereal bar, Reggie explained that there is a middle ground that encapsulates markets that are between traditional product categories.  People like eating breakfast but they don't always have the time, so the cereal bar was a success.  The photo, Internet and news channel functions of the Wii are there to help bridge the gap to consumers who "want an understandable way to catch up with the times."  Reggie explained that's why those functions are in the Wii, even though they have little to do with gaming.

I know some members of the hardcore will read this article and scoff. They'll say people who can't enjoy the kind of videogames, and online news services, that they enjoy don't deserve to be catered to. But I think making technology more accessible is always a good thing.

I agree as well, heck alot of the new technology is based on that philosophy. People want more but they also want it easier to access, which can be quite difficult at times.

Interesting article but it's what I expect from a Nintendo exec.
I wouldn't be so pissed off at Nintendo right now if their "blue ocean" didn't strategy mean throwing all hardcore gamers to the wind and embracing people who have never played a game in their life.

Oh well...

Try saying that with a straight face once Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3 and the other first party titles are out later this year. Mellow out.

I think we need new forum rules:

You're not allowed to whine about Nintendo abandoning the hardcore gamers with the Wii unless you can provide evidence that the hardcore gamers are being abandoned with the DS.

I think the cereal bar example isn't really a good comparison.  When Kellogg's started making cereal bars it had no effect on my Corn Flakes.  To me breakfast remained unchanged.  The Wii is more like Kellogg's making some new cereal that is supposed to please both "traditional" cereal eaters and people that don't have time for a proper breakfast.

Well you know guys, if you don't like it there's other viable options out there.  I hear the 360's got some good games out now.  Maybe it's time to put the fanboy in you away and just make a jump for it.  Microsoft don't bite...
