New details have emerged regarding Nintendo's upcoming squid-centric shooter, Splatoon.

Sadly, it looks like the game won't support voice chat for those looking to engage in random matches over the internet. Whether or not you'll be able to communicate with friends remains to be seen, but we've reached out to Nintendo for clarification. In addition to online, the studio is also working on a local multiplayer option as well as a 3D platforming game type, dubbed Hero Mode.

With regard to online matchmaking, players around the world will be grouped together based on skill level. Additionally, there won't be any CPU players thrown into the mix, as the game only supports human-controlled 4 vs. 4 matches.

Finally, Splatoon will feature music from Tooru Minegishi, whose work has been featured in a number of Zelda, Mario, and Animal Crossing games.

This will be a cool game with somewhat gimped online, from the looks of it. Shocker.

I'm sure this has been announced, but is there any local multiplayer?
I'm hoping the online is like Mario Kart in that my wife and I can online together

The article says they are working on local multiplayer. Guess you missed that.

Same here. I suppose the option to use it or not would be cool but I remember using the mic on Black Ops on Wii...ugh. The one time I didn't regret turning it on was when this one guy was shouting nonstop profanity in a Mickey Mouse voice.

Besides, if friends really wanted to talk to me during games there's always Skype.
