This is definetly the most balanced AW yet, and if you have a friend the online play is awesome. But the random assignment for WiFi is so lame, random maps is ok, but no fog of war most of the time is really horrible. Couple that with always clear weather and alot of the fun is sucked out of random matches.

That and i hate when you get predeploy maps....

But other than that, i think its the best advance wars yet, if you love the multiplayer aspect which i do. However, if you just liked to play the comp on Dual strike, and power level your COs, beware that all of that is gone. Its much more focused now on competitive play. If you loved the old stuff, i'd say to wait it out until the next days of ruin, where they will bring in a more robust single player.

And tabithia is is no fun to play against when there are no airports or seaports... Man i wish they would let you pick the maps and conditions! That would make the game a perfect 10.

To the above comment, yeah its definitly shorter. I heard people complain about the difficulty making it longer, but i remember AW: DS being harder and longer. I expect a 3rd AW before the DS passes on, and I bet it'll have better single player, and more COs. The real question is, will it NOT have random wifi.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Wii isn't hardcore enough
« on: October 22, 2007, 07:22:58 PM »
Alot of this Wii isn't hardcore sillyness is due to lack of steady new monthly hardcore game supply, I assume. But by the end of it's first year the wii will have been graced with a mario title, a paper mario title, a zelda, and a metroid. I know 2 were ports, they shouldn't count, but they are on the platform. We didn't see this kind of support in the DS's first year at all, and becuase of that DS and PSP were deadlocked in equal selling rates, that were decent. But the DS exploded in its second year, redesign yes, but new super mario bros and the fall/winter line up for that year were big and the previous year's titles (the few that were truly good) were also available. You can see the same trend with the 360, obviously not hardware numbers, but with software. The 2nd year coming into the fall and christmass season the 360 has a great line up.

My guess is 3rd parties are going to be late to the party because they dismiss the Wii now as if it won't have a more polished line up next year. The damn thing sells itself WITHOUT new software every month, the september NPD numbers prove that. And the same effect with the DS will most likely occur on the Wii. With that said, remember even with the PSP's horrible software sales it still get 3rd party support which is quite good, and the 360 is no PSP. So expect 3rd parties to be more stubborn and not support the Wii, or at least not support it to the fullest.

A big reason people at shoryuken are dissmissing SF4 is because of the HIGH probability that it will go straight to console, without an arcade release. That will mean many many things with the balancing could be terribly off. The other reason is that capcom of america is doing. And the reason I'm worried is because capcom let the original creator go because 2D games don't sell. Remember, his last interview has him saying that he wanted to add zangief and some other original characters into the next SF 3 instalment that would come AFTER third strike. His next move wasn't SF 4 but still SF 3, he hadn't perfected it yet. Moving to SF4 means something is up.

It's got high production values and a big marketing push. The over the top violence helps hold over the pathetically weak combat system. After playing ninja gaiden and devil may cry 3, god of war will seem like a watered down action game.

Of course if you REALLY like action games for the combat system, you SHOULD be playing godhand. Now that game got some bad reviews, but that was becuase it had a low budget. But if you can look past that, it has exellent gameplay and is extremely hard. I loved it, the one thing Ninja Gaiden 2 NEEDS to take from godhand is the level up system ( the better you do, the harder your enemies become, NOT the other way around, which is how it should be)

I think the reason konami is so attached to sony is that they have so much money invested in MGS4 that they can't help but be attached to sony.

To be honest, its quite lucky that we got 2 DS castlevanias, they could have easily put them on the psp. Same with contra, the last installments were on ps2. Maybe they think 2D is for the DS while 3D is meant for the PSP. Either way, the chronicles would have been nice on ds, but other than portable ops, the support they have been giving to the psp is rather weak.

Like i said, they should be taking relativily cost risks with new IP games on the Ds, which they only did with lunar knights sort of.. . They should be doing it, but they're not, which is a shame. Something else that troubles me is that i read somewhere that the creator of castlevania said if chronicles sells well he would shift his focus to 2D once again. Now I never like the 3D castlevania's, its great that he's finally waking up, but i wonder why he's choosing chronicles as his benchmark, when Dawn of sorrow and portait of ruin have already proven themselves, along with the GBA castlevanais.

I like the mortar infantry idea, as for tank killer, there is already a direct combat tank killer its either a bigger tank or a bomber

And they refuse to leave Sony even if they are going to lose a lot of money on PS3 games.

This is ridiculous.

Lunar knights, Contra 4, there are other games too i just don't know them off the top of my head. Although I agree they are supporting the PSP alittle too much considering its software sales (the installed base is respectable, but the software sales are low, low enough to warrant a ps2 publishing over psp every time)

It'd be nice if konami started to release some new IPs on the ds, that i feel like they are droping the ball on. The development costs and the installed base warrants exploration rather than the conservative approach, but i'll still take contra 4, and they really should release sympony and castlevania X on the ds too.

Party Bear i think the infantry (and by infantry i mean mechs) is acctually quite good for their cost, at 3000 a pop you can make 2 mechs that would cost 1000 less than a tank, and would win 2v1 against that tank every time, even if the tank struck one of the units first. On top of that, mechs can get the mountain defense bonus, which is insane for them. They are also valid vs AA guns, 2 mechs is 2K cheaper than an AA, though they don't give you any air defense. Mechs are meant for base capture, rugged terrain movement (nothing impedes those 2 movement points they get, although 2 movement is pathetic, BUT its only pathetic for reinfocing an area, in the thick of combat in an urban/forest/ or mountainous area its enough) and light vehicular/ small tank/ and infantry combat. They can also be used for squating on a barracks/airpot/naval yard or suprise capture, but normal infantry are more effective for that.

What i think there needs to be is more infantry classes. maybe weak AA infantry, or a spy/sabatoge unit, maybe a demolition unit.

And about the tank killer, if they do make one, then what becomes of the ranged units? I think they'll lose a lot of effectiveness. Big tanks should only be fought with bigger tanks, or air, or range, at least from a balancing perspective. However, i didn't like the neo or mega tank editions, i think heavy tank and regular was all that was needed from the tank class.

In fact the likelihood that SF4 will show up on the Wii is like 40% which makes me quite sad.

But to tell you the truth if they don't keep it 2D then I am not interested in the game.

Also, I hope they bring back the characters from their Alpha series, because I want to know what has happened with them.

Truthfully, I would have loved to see a game where Ryu, Ken are much older and are like the bosses of the game.

Then you have Sakuri as a young woman with her own destiny and you kinda see a story about what happened to the characters after M. Bison was defeated.

Create a new villian and keep it shrowded in Mystery and create a new anime/manga series that tells the story of this new evil coming to being and what it means the SF characters.

Ryu and Ken were older in Street fighter 3, and their story along with chun-li and goki were continued after bisons defeat. But, as excited as i am for the announcement, the oringal creator of the SF series was "let go" after third strike. This could very well be a capcom cash in, pushing the series to 3D, which would be horrible. And i'm not so sure only the hardcore care about 3rd strike, the anneversary edition sold decently well i thought.

I got it on the 23rd, but its good. It's not the guardian heroes styled brawl mixed with rpg elements that i wanted but its still good. Also its hard, but then again i set it to hard so i don't know what normal is like.

However, as pretty as it looks, if i had to but my money down on which one was more fun, it'd have to be red star. I know odin sphere got more press and looks better (and it is a fun game) but you guys sould check red star, esspecially with a friend.

And i didn't know GrimGrimoire was developed by the same guys, thats good news

It's out on the 22nd of this month here. And you can definetly expect reviews a day or 2 before the retail date because all the major sites are drooling over this game, mainly becuase its pretty, because i BARELY see them go into depth about the combat (which is the part i mainly intrested in).

Either way, red star is out now, and thats some good cheap gaming that everyone should try(as long as you like beat-em ups / shoot em-ups / or co-op games to play with a friend)

Yeah I'm worried about this game being sold out too, so i think i'll pick it up once it hits stores.

The nice thing about it is that the retail price is $40, the suck is that only in Japan can you get the pre-order bonus of the art book.

I don't know if your going to be able to find the game at a local retail store. I found out the game is limited print, but you can still order it for the $20 initial price on-line from gamestop and amazon. I've heard on other forums that the game is becoming increasing difficult to find and isn't stocked in many areas. While i don't know how true that is, i do know the game is 3 years old, and the publisher probably just wanted to dump the game off to gain SOME revenue back. Hopefully they'll ship more copies, but i haven't heard anything.

It's definitly a good fun co-op game, so if your looking for one it's a good choice, and at $20 brand new, it isn't to bad. Apparently you can get it for cheaper "from Buy.com and HAVE NOT used google check out with them before, you can get a $10 discount for using it. It comes out to around $13 with shipping" I ripped that off from another forum, hope it helps.

General Gaming / The Red Star and Odin Sphere
« on: May 04, 2007, 09:38:23 AM »
Don't know if any of you are intrested in these two titles, but I am, so I thought i spread the word.

As far as the red star, its already out and I've been playing it. Not many, or should i say almost none, of the on-line gaming sites have mentioned this game's release, and its sad because i'm a fan of beat-em ups. I can't say i love shumps but i liked ikaruga a lot, and the shump sections in the red star, while no where near as difficult as ikargua, are really fun, and they constantly change up the gameplay between shooter and beat-em up, and for some sections they mix the 2 together. The best part is that it's multiplayer and you can play with a friend. There are a total of 3 characters to choose from (which is really small, and the third has to be unlocked) but they all play differently. You can level up your weapons, health, special attack by purchasing upgrades at the end of each level based on points you scored (they rank you on how well you do as well). And the melee attack isn't simply limited to pressing X over and over, there is some different moves you can apply which a basic smash brothers approach to control.

Any one who has played guardian heroes on the saturn will probably like this game (depends if you hate hate old school shooters, as that element is heavily intergrated into the game). The special move set you can choose from isn't as wide as that of guardian heroes, and juggling enemies is pretty much not allowed in the red star, and if you ever played guardian heroes you know you could juggle untill the screen glitched out and turned black. I haven't gotten to far into the game, so i don't want to comment on the "magic system" but is seems like each character only gets one special attack, where in guardian heroes everyone had a bunch, and the purchasing upgrade system in this game works differently than the level up system in guardian heroes, but they are about equal. Now i know i made it sound like this game is crap when compared to guardian heroes, but I'm simply comparing it to the best because it's damn good, and better than any other beat-em up i've played so far with the exception of guardian heroes.

The game is $20 brand new, it came out like a week ago here in the states, there aren't many sites with reviews or videos. But if you aren't to lazy you can plug this into your browser -       http://youtube.com/watch?v=1ApKHGLbyAw         -and you'll see the first 2 levels of gameplay (really 3 but the 2nd stage is just a boss fight)

Also the game is based off of something, i think a comic, but i'm unsure. If your looking into getting the game because of the story I think you should reconsider as the story elements are weak. The game is really a throw back to old genres that just aren't really produced anymore. It's very good. If you like guardian heroes I'd say go for it. If you played and enjoyed god hand you'll like this game too (and the camera is never a problem)

Man i guess i ranted about red star to long. Anyway, anyone else looking into Odin Sphere. The game looks nice, and i definetly like the direction the combat is in, but i'm unsure if the combat is more secret of mana like than street fighter like. The art is also a plus. If anyone knows more about the combat system or nature of the game let me know.

TalkBack / RE:Kojima Plays Super Smash Bros. Brawl
« on: May 01, 2007, 01:48:44 PM »
You do have your point, but i was making a direct comparision to the dexterity and complexity involved in both games. They are not so un-alike, they are very similar. For arguements sake, I could say that one doesn't not need to use special's or supers in Street Fighter, you could just use strings instead of combos, and juggling can still take place. I know when i started playing SF2 I would only use Hard kicks and punches, usually the hard jump kick and sweep. Then when you learn quater circle foward for the first time, its all about the spam.

One must remember that SF 2, back when it was released, was accepted widely by the casual gamer, in fact it was a rage. So while many of you complain of its complexity and difficulty as an effect to garner intrest of the newbies and non-gaming inclined, this is a somewhat unfounded and highly flawed arguement, as many people were already lured in by Street fighter 2. Mario saved the console buisness, but Street Fighter saved the arcade world for a long period of time.

Regardless, both games require you to learn. Street fighter and the traditional fighters it spawned require you to know setups/ cancels / and juggles just like Smash brothers. The main difference is in Street fighter canceling and Just Framing (Parry's for SF3 include this) are more ephasized and in smash is juggling and setup (spiking, using throws for juggles, chain grabs on specific characters... DK you big monkey)

(Note I only intend this for a 1 on 1 comparision, if you want to include 4 man melee, then if find the arguement moot, mainly because SF is strickly 1v1, and its not fair to compair outside the games parameters.)

Smash_brother is right in his point about Melee being at the same level of depth as Street Fighter (or other fighters), that why there are tourny's / tiers ect.. ect...

What smash_brother has wrong is his complaint about complex inputs in street fighter being stupid, while NOT acknowleging the fact that to be good in melee you must know the ins and outs of the Short hop/ Shuffle/ Wave dash / L-cancel / Spike cancel / ect.. ect...

So while in Melee your not looking for specific frames to cancel into your super/ special, or moves with enough lag to buffer into that 360 grapple, what you are doing is shifting that finger dexterity over to hiting L right as link's sword plants into the floor, or wavedashing to cancel out of foxes reflector so you can score the C-stick up kick on the stunned opponent. I have always compared that last example to super canceling in Street fighter, its the same premise.

Smashbro is convincing me here. At first I thought, no way, but it seems remotely plausable now.

But capcom did make dead rising and Lost planet for 360 and HAVEN'T ported to any other CONSOLES. That makes me split on this issue. So for bets, I'm not putting one down until Smash puts up some Dead rising port images.

I'll throw my hat in this. Mainly i agree with couchmonkey, Microsoft has implemented some nice on-line and is now trying HARDER to diversify their games, but from a marketing sense. Come now Otogi / Panzer Dragoon / Jet Set Future / GunValkyrie / Ninja Gaiden / Phantom Dust (which had on-line and kicks Halo's ass all over) were all titles on the original Fat Box which had a very Japanese Flavor and were outside the Shooter American demographic. Problem was not many people outside the gaming community knew, cause MS didn't bother marketing it around the US just in Japan. This holds very true for Phantom Dust, which is a microsoft funded game, made in microsoft studios, but had to be brought over by majestco to the US (I won't get into how awsome this game is, but it is extremly good and different).

Now with the 360, its like they woke up. Now they see some need to diversify so they are marketing it, The pinata, the kameo, the blue dragon. But kameo and VP failed hard, and the only other japanese sucesses stories on the 360 that i know of are Dead Rising and Lost Planet, and one is a zombie game which American players seem to like regardless of who developes it. So if blue dragon comes, and fails to deliver, I question whether Microsoft will continue this diversity marketing approach when Gears of War brings home more cash, and Tom Clancy "insert something" WAR game and GTA style clone too.

Spak-Spang the way I see it is they do on-line better than sony, but Sony doesn't make you pay. They promoted HD before sony, but lets look at the fact that most gamers play in SD and the fact that throught the history of console gaming it's usually the system with the LEAST power that gets the most development and usually wins that generation (I know the SNES was techincally superior then the Megadrive but the Neo-geo and turbo-gfx16 were superior to the SNES, and the NES was competeing with the MegaDrive for a while). The only reason everyone is jumping on the "HD" bandwagon is cause sony is doing HD, if Sony said screw it to HD (like if they never made Blu-ray or sold HD TVs) then 360 would be getting less support, becuase companies wouldn't be intrested in taking on higher operational costs with greater risks, for less return. Everyone says HD is the way to go, cause the publishers still see Sony as a power house, and IF the PS3 ever picks up steam, they have the tools and experience from the 360 to switch over to PS3 development whenever they want.

Seriously, the HD support is all bells and whistles, the PS2 was damn weak, with craptastic on-line, only 2 controler ports (which severly limits multi-player in house too) and it mopped the floor with gamecube and xbox, AND IS currently mopping the floor with the 360. Only once in the 360's life did it manage to come ahead of the PS2, ever.

Anyway back to the point. Original XBox was what i call niche gaming, 10 years later, when no one can play Halo cause it burns their eyes, is too "ugly" or is to slow compared to "modern gameplay"(which are some complaints of old Golden Eye fans i know) no one will remember the few good games from it, because there are few. For finacial, Xbox Fat was a MASSIVE failure. I know i read it before, and i'll try to find the link, but MS isn't all rosey about Xbox brand either, the company has some internal quarrels over the system. Seems like some people there don't like blowing billions, and they want to terminate the console, which is why some people point out the 3 console plan that MS stated a while ago. If MS doesn't make it out of the Red with the 360, they still may throw up 720, but if that doesn't make bank, I'm sure people inside the company will pull the plug. Also aren't 360 sales rate on par with Xboc original sales rates? If so, Xbox original total worldwide sales are less than N64 (like 18 million or so less), and that was considered a failure by many.

EDIT: Yeah also about that MS on-line you gotta wonder if console gamers really like on-line, or do they just hate paying for it. It'd be intresting to see next year what percentage of PS3 user play on-line matches. Cause I know MS stated that they hit 6 million LIVE users, but never broke down stats for gold and silver accounts. All they said was that 70% of these users used marketplace, and 70% of that 70% downloaded LIVE arcade games. So if they have those kind of stats, where are the GOLD stats, or % of users who acctually play on-line? My guess is that its low, or even the rate at which the original box's LIVE was at. Thats speculation of course.

General Gaming / RE:GameTrailer's Top Ten Consoles
« on: April 23, 2007, 11:55:53 AM »
The top 4 are good. Although I feel like the PS2 was better than the PS1. Either way, the list isn't bad if you remove the numbers and take it for a list of 10 consoles that don't suck. EXCEPT for the atari, as my dad had one, and i played it, and I wasn't a fan. At least the Xbox didn't make the list, like when EGM made their list and placed it above the dreamcast N64 and Gameboy and one other system, it might have even been the genesis. Thats just a crime. I love the Neo-Geo and Saturn , but I'll never put it on list, becuase there weren't enough classics on the system. The Xbox is no different, Shooters get replaced by new shooters and their sequels, so do sport games. When you subtract all those games, I feel like the original xbox has some pretty good games, but not many, I can name like 7 games that i can replay and fully re-enjoy becuase they were great, no more. With the SNES, the number draws much closer to 30 or even 40.

You should give pikmin 2 and Jungle beat a try. The 3 best GC games in my opinion were (in no particular order)  Jungle Beat / Pikmin 2 / RE 4

All of them have good replay value, are challenging, and are very fun, not to mention well made. Then again I'm an odd ball, my favorite PS2 game is GOD HAND, and XBOX is Phantom Dust. But you should try those 2 out.

I also noticed you said you couldn't get into Paper Mario, if your not down with paper mario because its not conventional then you should try skies of arcadia, that game doesn't do anything really different but is solid.

Plus it's hard to really categorize any current Nintendo titles as "Miyamoto titles" because his job position is different now.  It was in the past where he was more the "main guy" making games and those games are considered some of the best ever.

If I was going to name someone that's overrated I would have named Yuji Naka but a few years of total crap have kind of killed his legacy so he's no longer overrated.  So for now I'd pick Sid Meier just because he puts his name in the title of all his games and that just drives me nuts since outright legends like Miyamoto and Yu Suzuki don't.

Is Yuji Naka the creator of sonic, cause GOD would i have put him on the list. HE should have been number 1, 2-100 should have been everyone else on sonic team for the past 4 years. I never liked sonic, so i would of have him on there for the past 10-15 years, or however old that mascot is.

I wouldn't bash Sid to much, Civilization is an amazing game, I haven't touched Civ 4 and i hear its aweful, and read why most epople think its awful, but thats becuase, like i am, they are greatly acustomed to the micromangement of 1 through 3 and they proabably hate the fact that they got rid of defense values for an overall power value. But as far as strategy games go, they do't get more technical then civ.

They also should have put the head developer of Bungie's Halo in that list, cause really, it's an FPS damn it, theres nothing special or creative about halo.
