Nintendo Gaming / Re: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars
« on: April 03, 2011, 08:46:32 PM »
This game is easily in the top 2 for the launch titles (along with SSF4).

I've never really played many turn-based strategy games and I love this one. Sure there's no voice, but there are some animated parts every once in a while. The 3D is decent, and since it is top-down, you get a good sense of depth.

The play mechanics are solid. I don't feel the computer cheated at all so far, and when you get stuck at certain points, even if you try something different, the computer AI works differently.

The characters get some kinds of personality via the story/text bubbles, and you get to control 6 Ghosts (eventually.... along with non-Ghosts as well).

I'm on Chapter 3 now. The difficulty even on Beginner is ramping-up. There were some *very* hairy maps in Chapter 2. When you get out of the open areas and into caves and bases, you do experience some 'fog-of-war' type stuff... you have no idea what's through a door.

Once you finish a campaign mission, it will usually open-up a Skirmish map, or a co-op map, or another map (sorry forgot the name). For completing the Campaign missions, you will receive between 4-8 stars to distribute to your squad for upgrades.

You may think, 'oh, I get to buy 10 upgrades for every Ghost that's cool', but then when you get a 10th upgrade, another row opens-up and you realize there are probably 25 upgrades to get (I think?)! Besides more health, I've gotten better guns already, and add-ons like Armor.

It says there are 35 maps and 20 skirmish maps total (I have 7), so I am probably less than half-way through so far.

As for difficulty levels, I believe the only difference is the HPs and damage are upped, but someone who's farther along can confirm/deny this.

Sorry for not mentioning it originally, this was in Calgary. It might be a YMMV thing... I saw it at full-price today at another store.

I just wanted to chime-in with 'I have the same issue that Plugabugz reported when using the Internet Channel on the Wii'. :)

Finished it yesterday. Some very good boss fights in the last level. My total game time was around 17 hours according to the save clock. Definitely worth the $39.

Almost finished, and while the enemies are never too hard (and infrequent really), some of the rooms get downright nasty puzzle-wise.

Nintendo Gaming / Tomb Raider Anniversary

Bought the new Tomb Raider Anniversary game @ TRU today. C$39.99.

Played several hours (completed Peru) and it's been great. Controls take some getting used-to, but now things are going quite smoothly. Graphics look great (better than the GC TR: Legend release, but I have no idea how it stacks-up to the 360 version).

Only issue I have so far is with aiming. Sometimes you'll slam into a pole while some wolves/whatever are after you, and you'll be disoriented because the camera will be in an off position. I haven't died from it yet, but it's worth noting.

The added Wii controls are done really well. You can dust, trowel, pickaxe wall areas now for clues/bonus items. You move levers, cogs, etc. You also do motions during some cutscenes, which were unexpected but neat.

Overall a very solid game so far that's worth checking out.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: The Simpsons Game

Back again after finishing the game today. My first post's good/bad issues turned-out to be true for the rest of the game.

Camera problems and jumping were the two killers for me in this one -- they were ridiculously bad. You will be as frustrated at times playing this game as you've ever been since the early days of the NES.

BUT...

The story was so good and FUNNY, that I'd suffer through 20 or 40 lame deaths per level just to see more of it. It was better-written than the last 10 seasons of the TV show. Some of the stages are EPIC in their level of parody. Nothing much went untouched for spoofs on videogames/movies/Simpsons lore - everything major was covered. Heck, entire levels become based on games. Any Simpsons fan who's a longtime videogame player should at least rent this one.

Got mine on Friday. The fit is great and I like them a lot after using 'em for a couple of hours. However, I found the added weight to be more noticeable than I thought it would be.

I played around an hour of the game tonight. I have to say straight-away that I'm disappointed.

First thing you notice when you take control of Homer: The graphics should be better. Characters look like scribbles at times. The backgrounds look pretty good though. After about 5 seconds of playing, you'll notice how bad the camera is. It doesn't get any better as things progress either. Control is not very tight, so you'll be missing easy jumps a lot, especially when you're Bart. Prepare for pain on Stage 2! :-(

As for the good well... things are tied really closely to the show. Fans should really enjoy it for that alone. The dialog is great. Funny quips are constant when fighting, etc. The cinema scenes look better than a TV clip.

Oh, the Wii special stuff... haven't seen much that's special so far. One special move involves pulling both Wiimote+chuk towards you. It's over-complicated for a move that is basically your area affect move when fighting. The Wii minigames have been nothing exciting yet either.

I'll try to post more as I progress, but my gut feeling is to give this one a rent before you buy.

A whole stack of 8 was at the local WM tonight. And now there's one less. Best news was the parity price of C$39.83. I was expecting games to still be $10-15 over the US MSRP.

Ninja Gaiden II... way too hard back in the day. I must've died about a million times on the multi-part final boss.

So... I registered the game on my.nintendo.com and I got an offer/survey that netted me a feather quill stylus courtesy of the Big N. Has anyone else had this?

Edit: Oops, I'm 4 days late. Search didn't find IceCold's post.

I tried registering for these from my Wii last night and all I got an empty page (no success/error msg.). When I tried it on a real browser today, it said I already reached my limit of skins, so it did work using Opera after all.

Did my duty as a gamer and downloaded both! S&P took a while to DL for me too. Can someone recommend the best control scheme (Type 3 seemed OK to me but something felt off)?

As an added 'bonus' from Nintendo, after my first CC point buy failed and gave me a strange six digit error msg (something like 380450), it actually did go through, so I ended-up with 4000 pts when I only wanted 2000.

Finished normal mode yesterday. Note: After saving your last save, you can't start that saved game again if you wanted to go back for 100% -- you can only start a new game. It did post a 'completed' screenshot to the Wii Msg Board, which was nice.

Replaying on Veteran difficulty now... bosses are tougher. I'm not sure if they up damage needed but the damage taken is up (from 2 to 5 damage for a pitfall for example).

If you have Friend vouchers to trade, add me, and PM/post yours too. I have 18 to trade. My FC is: 7531 5812 4677 9063

Shecky checkout Google or GameFAQs for the secret moves guides. To jump diagonally up: after you're charged-up, use the R button, point left or right, then hit the jump button. You will go flying left or right.

It looks like the "Everybody Votes Channel" is giving more region specific questions now too. Unless you guys are also getting the questions about Canada every week?

Does anyone know how many game hours Dragon's Curse is supposed to take to complete? It seems really short from what I've seen around...

Too good of a deal to be true. This was shot-down as a pricing error later-on in that same thread.
