Nintendo Gaming / RE:casual gamers, nongamers.

As curious as i am about revolution's controller, i more curious how they intend to rope in casual gamers and nongamers (and if the "revolutionary" aspect of revolution has anything to do with that). personally, the only kinds of games that I've seen attract nongamers (assuming they're hoping to bring them in using games at all--maybe with quirky titles like nintendogs) are games like dance dance revolution, police 911 (a motion sensing arade shooter game), some boxing game (motion sensing game where you actually throw punches wearing "gloves"), and the occassional light-gun game... I'm assuming nintendo is hoping to attract nongamers with more than just their dvd function.

if it isn't with the controller, how else might nintendo bring in the casual and non-gamers?

The only thing I can think of is better controller interface and new and more varied game genres. Maybe the controller will be so starkly different in terms of use that it will enable games to have more interactive gameplay and allow for brand new genres and the resurrection of old genres that faded out over the years. Not everyone likes the kind of games that currently flood the market.

The DS even allows for genre expansion and that's coming from a handheld which is very limited in what it can do. A console can have a whole controller to itself which opens the door to posibilities. I think if games start offering new types of play styles, become more interactive and easier to pick up and get into, only then will they begin to attract more non-gamers.

I hate to say it but even I am beginning to feel like I'm straying further and further away from modern gaming. A good deal of the games I have this gen anyway are either quirky games (Katamari), residue from last gen (Disgaea), old-school games (Ikaruga) or non-traditional games (Animal Crossing). And a lot of the games I play tend to be shorter or easier to get into.  I don't have a whole lot of time. When I was a teenager I could sit in front of the TV and play Chrono Trigger for several hours straight after school. Now it takes me several weeks to beat the average 40+ hour RPG.

I'm also starting to feel kinda intimidated by all the new changes and additions that are going to happen to consoles next gen. I look at my friends and family members who stopped gaming over the years and sometimes I wonder if I'll be joining them someday too.

No. Much too far away. I wish they'd open a chain of Nintendo World stores like the Apple Stores.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Game Boy Micro
« on: June 01, 2005, 10:07:55 PM »
I'm really looking forward to the Gameboy Micro. It's very portable. I already have a GBA SP but I do take it with me on the go quite often and it does feel a bit on the bulky side sometimes. Plus, the GBMicro might look more like a cell phone to a non-gamer due to its size. That would be a definite plus as it would save me much unneeded bother.

I also love the faceplates thing. I want one with Pikmin... or with Link & Zelda on it!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Castlevania Interview
« on: June 01, 2005, 09:55:03 PM »
I don't like the anime-ish art style of the DS Castlevania game. It looks tacky and I feel it doesn't fit the series. I much perfer the other art style. (I'm still going to get the game, though).

~IGA: Actually, I have been pushed by the consumer. That doesn't mean I don't love the games I'm working on. I also have to think about not only the hardcore fans, but the female Castlevania players. They are a small portion of the fan base, but that's part of the reason why I wanted to integrate an experience point system into Curse of Darkness -- to allow female gamers to enjoy powering up their characters.~

Well, regarding this... it isn't something so simple as "powering up" my characters that attracts me to RPGs or games like SotN. It was the beautiful art style, the music, the sense of exploration, the enjoyable gameplay (and in the case of many RPGs, the wide variety of interesting characters both male and female).

SoTN still stands to this day as my favorite Castlevania game. Heck, it is one of my favorite games, period. I played LoI on PS2 and I didn't like it - it felt very generic and unenjoyable: not because of the lack of a level-up system but because of the generic 3D hack and slash gameplay, poor camera angles, unmemorable music, repetitive environment, lack of varied environments and lack of a feeling of genuine exploration.

Well, I can only speak for myself...

Well, this is just my personal opinion on the matter here but no, I don't want to ever see Zelda like that. If Nintendo ever chooses to make such a game themselves, they should make it with a new IP. Zelda has always  had a magical, surreal atmosphere - it's always kinda given me the same feeling I get when I watch Miyazaki films.

And yes, I have played God of War.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:The Return of Chibi-Robo
« on: May 25, 2005, 03:24:03 PM »
I'm so glad to see Chibi-Robo return from the grave!

I want to play this game more than anything else right now (well, Chibi-Robo and Twilight Princess). I don't care about the graphics because I already think they're stylish and pretty - kinda like Animal Crossing or Katamari Damacy. You don't NEED mega-graphics for a game like this one.

I'd hate to see Chibi-Robo end up in limbo like Giftpia... I've already mailed Nintendo about bringing this game outside of Japan - about three or four times.

I'm interested in Geist because of the possession aspect and the fact that it seems to incorporate some adventure elements in the gameplay. Is it categorized as a FPS or FPA? I'm not a fan of console FPS (too used to using a mouse for FPS) but I really, really enjoyed Metroid Prime as a FPA.

Wow, this and a few other comments I've read makes me really curious about what Revolution's "online" set-up could be like. I've played online console games before and I've always had a problem with them because they end up in the long run being more stressful than fun. My whole reason for playing video games in the first place is to relax and wind down but the agressive environment of online games tends to wire me back up.

At this point the only things that could unconvince me from getting a Revolution is high price (above $250) or some weird mutant controller. I'm open to a new user interface, just as long as if it doesn't include something really weird like long detachable arms or something.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be fine with the launch games. Two launch games are usually what I buy for any system's launch. Smash Brothers is a definite buy for me, and I'm pretty sure Mr. Miyamoto's new project is going to be something different that's meant to appeal to the non-gamers out there so that's a definite buy for me.

Gamestop never tried to force a warranty on me or anything but they do overcharge for practically everything here. $55 for console & PSP games, $40 for DS games. I don't like shopping there because of the overpricing.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Nintendogs - 40/40 from Famitsu
« on: April 29, 2005, 06:48:30 AM »
Isn't Famitsu super strict with giving out all 10s? I can only remember OoT, Wind Waker, Vagrant Story and Soul Calibur getting 40/40s.

This is really exciting. I can't wait for Nintendogs to come out over here!

It sounds like a migraine. If you want more info on it I found a nice site here:

http://www.mamashealth.com/migraine.asp

Like others said, go to your doctor as it could be anything. But if was seizures I'd think the symptoms would be different. I've suffered from migraines and those symptoms do sound familiar. It's possible concentrating on 3D graphics on a small screen might have triggered it. Mine were usually triggered by caffiene, stress, and very bright light.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Plans Major Retail Store in NYC
« on: February 07, 2005, 12:13:49 AM »
OMG... a Nintendo Store?

If this turns into the Apple Store thing it'll be a dream come true. Had a heck of a time finding any Apple Products in my city having to drive to some far off, private store located in the basement of a large building. But now.. not even a half hour drive got me my shiny new iPod and a plethora of other things I'd been meaning to get.

A similar situation is happening with Gamecube and Gameboy Advance products. Can't seem to find them anywhere. Yeah, sales are not so hot in the overall picture, but considering all that any store seems to have on the shelf are 1st party titles and a few recent releases (and it's been like that here for WELL over two years, even when Xbox and GCN hardware sales were closer in number to each other). It's about time Nintendo opens up a store displaying all their prodcuts. According to the GS in my area, Viewtiful Joe 2 isn't available  for the GCN and the Super Mario Advance games are ALL out of print.

On the GCN, yes, that's what I'd like to see. I'd even be more than happy with the GBA versions coming to the US.

Only old Nintendo franchises I really care to see brought back to life are Kid Icarus and StarTropics. And while we're on the topic of old franchies, I say Enix should bring back Actraiser.

Was the game ever more than a rumour?

It was listed under future releases on Nintendo's old website under upcoming games. There were also some kind of screenshots of peoples faces. It was a long time ago - back when the N64 was still the current generation system.

I'm thinking, if they ever do decide to make Marionette, it would probably be the type of game that would work better with the Revolution due to the assumed increased interactivity - or at least, I hope so.

I got the lobster boxart. No idea there even was an alternate (Pikmin on branch) boxart until after I already opened/started playing my copy. I would've preferred the branch boxart had I known.

General Chat / RE:How Games 'Apparently' Affect Children
« on: August 26, 2004, 12:16:01 PM »
Geez, talk about being overprotective. I wonder what would happen as the kid gets older and starts to do things on his own... like watch TV and read.... and want to spread his own butter over toast! *gasp*

Maybe just coming from where I'm at, being given army men and those loud pop guns toys as a little kid of like 5... helping my grandmother with the gardening which included holding all those *dangerous* garden tools and told bedtime stories about creatures with sharp claws like knives coming out of the trees at night to cut up and eat little children who don't listen to their parents...

My mom always thought children need to be given a good scare. Apparently when she was a kid (she says) she watched horror movies in the theatre and when a guy drove up to her when she was walking with a bunch of friends and asked HER to get into the car she thought of one of the movies and freaked out and ran off with the other kids.

I can play 99% of all the games out there with no problems but biggest (and only) offenders for me were Mario sunshine and Starfox adventures on the gamecube, I could not stand to watch/play them for very long without having to take breaks to prevent 'gaming sickness'.

How prevalent is this out there I wonder or is it rare with the two games I mentioned?
Yeah, Starfox Adventures, I-Ninja, Freaky Fliers, Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy and Timesplitters 2 give me eyestrain & headaches. Can't play them for more than a few minutes without starting to feel sick. Something to do with the graphics scheme. The mansion entrance in Eternal Darkness has it too but that room can be avoided since it's only a small part of the game. At least those are the games that come to mind.  I can play anything else, rapid movement or spinning doesn't bother me and I have no problem with flashy lights or anything. I'm fine with all the other FPS I've played and no problem with Mario Sunshine.

That really contradicts with the fact that its nearly impossible to find because its selling out everywhere.

Didn't Xenosaga sell about that much on its first month of release? (114,896 units if  I'm not mistaken) And I believe Xenosaga's close to a 500K seller now. Maybe Namco just didn't ship enough units of ToS to meet demand, or word of mouth advertisement hasn't spread yet. ToS managed to keep itself in the top ten when the rest of the top ten chart is dominated by sports and movie licenses (and hyped to kazoo Driv3r). A shame ToS didn't sell more, but... I guess we'll have to wait and see until next month to know if Tales' sales are going to keep up or if it's going to drop off the charts.

Onasaka Masaya?! Ack! That's the guy who does Vash in Trigun, isn't it? Great, great voice & talented VA or at least I think he is. *_* I'm guessing he'd probably be the one doing Zelos' voice judging on what would have been needed for Zelos' character and the type of acting needed for the part...? o_O Anyway, I would've really liked to of heard his VA whatever the case.
