Exactly. they were the best developer of all on the SNES (on a volume AND quality basis), but since then they've gone from great to good to patchy to hit and miss to suck.

Where did the developer of Contra 3, Axeley, Cybernator, Sunset Riders, Castlevania, Tiny Toons, Gradius 3 go?

Gradius V is the only great game they;ve done in years, and they had to outsource!

MGS2 and3 sucked so, so hard. They've ruined castlevania and contra (tried to resurrect contra with shattered soldier and STILL missed the mark by screwing the weapon system, the stuffed it all over again with neo contra).

I now HATE konami.

It's actually almost exactly 6%!

I just thought of this the other day. Of course there are differences, but there are certainly parallels too, don't you think?

Two companies, one story?

The history of The Sega Saturn and the Sega Dreamcast

Sega Saturn

Sega releases a large black console in the US, about the size of a VCR, called the Saturn. It has internal memory for saving games (in this case a battery back up) so it doesn’t need a memory card, but it supports memory cards too.

It uses the same media as Sony’s Playstation (CD), and has the same media functionality (plays audio CDs).

It is released in the US with a very large controller, that in functionality (that is, buttons) is basically a rip-off of Sega’s last effort (the Mega Drive pad), with the added functionality of Nintendo's last pad (The SNES shoulder buttons)

People scorn the size and form of the controller, so it is quickly replaced with the Japanese edition, which had the same buttons but was smaller.

Eventually, the Saturn’s much hyped online service, Sega NetLink is launched. Only about 6% of Saturn users ever use the service (most of them in Japan).

The launch price is very expensive compared to what consoles have cost in the past, although Sega were still making a substantial loss on the system.

While having a loyal user base, the console is not profitable, and it loses a lot of money for Sega.

The system’s design was also such that it couldn’t be revised to save on manufacturing costs, so any price drops had to be absorbed by Sega themselves, and the company lost even more.

By 1998, Sega has lost $309 million on the Saturn in the US alone.

The Saturn is only just hitting it’s stride creatively when Sega starts winding down production of the hardware, with amazing games like Burning Rangers, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Marvel vs Street Fighter and Radiant Silvergun coming out when Sega's next console was already late in development.

The Saturn has about a 12 million installed user base when Sega kills it off by moving to Dreamcast development, the majority of which are in Japan (8 million)

Sega Dreamcast

Well before Sony and Nintendo’s current consoles (PS1 and N64) life cycle is complete, Sega releases a smaller, white console called the Dreamcast. This console does not have the inbuilt memory of it’s predecessor, and requires additional hardware to save games, in the form of a new type of memory card with a small LCD screen, called the VMU. It is not backward compatible with its predecessor.

It uses a new untested media format called GD rom, which is basically a higher density version of their last machine’s format (CD). It retains the media functionality of it’s predecessor (plays audio CDs).

It’s controller steals Nintendo’s analogue stick and controller slot.

Sega once again heavily promotes it’s online service (even naming the console after it - “Dreamcast” as in “broadcast”), and once again only a small percentage of players ever use the service.

To begin with, the console’s graphics are great, way better then Sony and Nintendo’s ageing hardware. But by the time the new Sony and Nintendo come out, the Dreamcast’s graphics are looking pretty dated. It doesn’t help that apart from some great exceptions, a lot of DC games are just higher resolution versions of N64 and PS1 games.

Despite hopes to the contrary, Sega are losing just as much money on the Dreamcast as they were on the Saturn.

Pretty soon, Sega shareholders are out of patience, and Dreamcast production is ceased.

Sega leaves the console race in massive debt.

The history of The Microsoft Xbox and the Microsoft Xbox360.

(companies' names changed, there are also a few other small edits.)

Microsoft Xbox

Microsoft releases a large black console in the US, about the size of a VCR, called the Xbox. It has internal memory for saving games (in this case a Hard Drive) so it doesn’t need a memory card, but it supports memory cards too.

It uses the same media as Sony’s Playstation 2 (DVD), and has the same media functionality (plays DVDs).

It is released in the US with a very large controller, that in functionality is basically a rip-off of Sega’s last effort (the Dreamcast pad), also ripping off the added functionality of Nintendo’s new pad (the Gamecube’s c-stick).

People scorn the size and form of the controller, so it is quickly replaced with the Japanese edition, which had the same buttons but was smaller.

Eventually, the Xbox’s much hyped online service, Xbox Live is launched. Only about 6% of Xbox users actually use the service.

The launch price is very expensive compared to what consoles have cost in the past, although Microsoft were still making a substantial loss on the system.

While having a loyal user base, the console is not profitable, and it loses a lot of money for Microsoft.

The system’s design was also such that it couldn’t be revised to save on manufacturing costs, so any price drops had to be absorbed by Microsoft themselves, and the company lost even more.

By 2005, Microsoft had lost US$4 Billion on the Xbox.

The Xbox was only hitting it’s stride creatively when Microsoft started winding down production of the hardware, with amazing games like Fable, Doom 3 and Forza Motorsport coming out when Microsoft’s next console was already late in development.

The Xbox had about a 20 million installed user base when Microsoft killed it off by moving to Xbox360 development.

Microsoft Xbox360

Well before Sony and Nintendo’s current consoles (PS2 and Gamecube) life cycle is complete, Microsoft releases a smaller, white console called the Xbox360. This console does not have the inbuilt memory of it’s predecessor, and requires additional hardware to save games, in the form of a new type of External hard Drive. It is not backward compatible with its predecessor.

It uses a new untested media format called HD DVD, which is basically a higher density version of their last machine’s format (DVD). It retains the media functionality of it’s predecessor (plays DVDs).

It’s controller steals Nintendo’s Wireless function.

Microsoft once again heavily promotes it’s online service, and once again only a small percentage of players ever use the service.

To begin with, the console’s graphics are great, way better then Sony and Nintendo’s ageing hardware. But by the time the new Sony and new Nintendo come out, the Xbox 360’s graphics are looking pretty dated. It doesn’t help that apart from some exceptions, a lot of Xbox360 games are just higher resolution versions of PS2 and Gamecube games.

Despite hopes to the contrary, Microsoft are losing just as much money on the Xbox360 as they were on the Xbox.

Pretty soon, Microsoft shareholders are out of patience, and Xbox360 production is ceased.

Microsoft leaves the console race, with the games division in massive debt.

GTA: Vice city the best selling game fo all time at 6.5 million copies? (over Mario 64 at 6 million)?

1) North America only figures (Mario 64 killed VC worldwide - Japan people)

2) What the F*$&! Super Mario Bros 1 Sold 60 million copies worldwide (although half were packaged in the system) and Mario 3 sold 40 million! Are you telling me they sold less then 10% of their sales in the USA?

3) It's prob some marketing Bull%&$ to pretend gaming started with the PS2, because that's the most likley console to have ads in the games.

Amazingly old news. It's just that a new company has picked them up for distribution. There was also the GBA shaped one a while back.

It's notally not legal, and most likley needs an adapter to play 72 pin NES carts, unless it somehow has both pinset readers.

That's what some 'pundits' believe. We'll have to wait for the figures at the quarterly report.

Actually Microsoft originally hoped to break even this generation, and only changed to the 'getting a foot in the door' line after it was clear the billions were not coming back.

And sure, they've made themselves a prescence, but by losing more money then Sony and Nintendo combined make in the hardware/licencing buisness. Yeah, great for the industry to make hardwar a loss making industry as a whole.

Foe this reason among others,  xbox is the worst thing to ever happen to videogames. hopefully xbox 2 will fail just as badly and my post is a train wreck will have to drop out (the shareholders won't put up with another money pit).

Yeah, the DS launch was huge here. I'd say the sales were so good because it was the first ever hardware launch with an excellent price. I mean, you have to be a chimp to have bought a $750 PS2 or $850 xb at launch, but a DS for $190? Based on current exchange rates we had the cheapest DS in the world.

Some links for you:

From Microsofts's own page, scroll down to see that in 3rd quarter 2004, the xbox division "Home and Entertainment" still lost 142 million for the quarter:

http://www.microsoft.com/msft/earnings/FY05/earn_rel_q1_05.mspx
(elsewhere it was claimed that it was even more then this)

and their 2nd quarter 2004 xbox loss of 339 million

http://news.com.com/Microsoft+earnings+paint+mixed+picture/2100-7343_3-5280372.html

Here's a link about their first quarter 2004 loss of 204 million:

http://news.gamewinners.com/index.php/news/261/

Experts predict a slightly lower loss (on last year) of about $150 million for the fourth quarter.

Add this to the confirmed $2.5 billion loss to the end of 2003, and you get.......guess what.......at least a 3.4 billion dollar loss!!!!!

Nintendo Gaming / RE:psp is online now wheres nintendos plan

To those guys arguing about microsoft numbers, Microsoft has made a net loss on xbox of at least 3.2 billion dollars (as of December 2004). At least 3 billion is confirmed from quarterly reports, and the rest is a conservative estimate until the next report. It's possibly actually up to 3.5 billion.

I should stress this is NET loss. They are not 'making heaps on games and halo 2' on top of this. This already includes all inflows of cash. I believe their income has been about 3 billion for the console, but they have spent 6.2 billion to get back their 3 billion.

What's most interesting of all is the understanding in economic circles that Halo 2 actually lost money. Despite selling 6 million copies, they actually spent more then it made on development and advertising.

Xbox is a mammoth failure. For a comparison, it has already lost over 10x the ammount of money for the parent company then the Saturn did for Sega. So nobody should copy anything they do if they want to remain in viable buisness.

EA have heaps of characters, much better then marvel vs xmen that game suxed. have you ever heard of 'goldeneye' or "Lord of the rings" Goldeneye could kick wolverine's ass!!! And SSXXmen would be gooder then Need for flash speed. Much better then Nintendo's lame "mario" or "samus" or "Link". Who ever hearsd of them anyway? Goldeneye is much famouser then Mario, it is a better selling game on xbox (which has sold 100 million consoles in the wor'ld and is more powerfulll then a super computer and gamecube has only sold 4 million and only has 5 good games and xbox has over 2000)

So stop saying bad EA when their much betterer then Nintendo with their tiku tiku tiku!  games like mario and resident evil 4 and Banjo Ha Ha Microsoft got rare now and Ghoulies is 20 times best then mario. Ninetndo should stick with GBA but PSP will killit it's already sold more then GBA and kiccs adds nut chim goob.

Well it was pretty weak, especially when you count things like naming buttons after letters innovations. Apparently keyboards dont count. I remember reading this ages ago and I don't know why I didn't post.

Hmmm... I didn't call the naming of buttons 'innovations', if you check the top of the original post, you'll see that each point is listed as an 'idea'. The two main points of the article were:

1) Nintendo has invented every single main feature of all standard controllers, Minus the DC's analogue triggers and the PS2's analogue buttons.

2) Nintendo's competitors have shamelessly and repeatedly copied their good ideas without ever adding new ideas. That is, all new controller development comes from Nintendo.

Things Nintendo has invented that have been copied:

the hand controller itself,
digital pad,
option buttons,
two and four button layouts,
shoulder buttons,
handlebar grips,
analouge sticks,
rumble feature,
controller slots,
trigger buttons,
camera controlls (c buttons then c stick),
Real Wireless.

Things Sega has invented that have been copied:
Analogue triggers

Things Sony has invented that have been copied:

Second analogue stick (N64 had dual analogue in Goldeneye before it, and it was only available on a mid generation upgrade controller)
Click on the sticks (L3 and R3) a lame idea that creates dead space in the middle of the stick.

Things Microsoft has invented that have been copied:

Well, not really fair since it's their first, but they basically took a DC controller and ripped off the GC c-stick, then made it huge with crappy little buttons. The Xbox controller is the worst standard controller ever, including the Atari 5200 (or whatever one had the numeric keypad)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perfect Dark [and Goldeneye before that] did support Dual Analog using 2 N64 controllers. WHAT A DOOZY!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Oh yeah, I totally forgot about that! I used the 2 controller setup in Goldeneye one player, when you got good at it it was awesome! There was also a really free feeling not having to have both hands locked together. I had to stop using it when Goldeneye took off as a party game, and I had to practice with only one controller. (small note: Most good Goldeneye players used control setups that had the stick and c-button suite as move and look or vice versa, a two directional input setup approximating a dual analogue setup. So it was very similar, even on one controller).

Looks like Nintendo were also the first to have a game that utilised dual analogue! BOOYAH!!!!

Man, Nintendo Kicks ass.

Q]Heh. Are there even 50 people in all of Australia that own a Gamecube?

There are 150,000 people in Australia that own a gamecube (source: Sydney morning Herald).

It's not THAT much of a failure, it's just that xbox has sold 420,000 here and ps2 1 million. However, xbox also LOSES the most money per unit here, so no wonder they're doing ok in terms of market share. But they lose almost $150 AUS per unit sold here (they're about $250 with 2 games) from what I've read. And they spend BIG on Ads and store space.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Why does Konami hate GC?
« on: June 25, 2004, 06:16:04 PM »
I've got every single console castlevania game(all 18 of them including Dracula X PCengine), and the vast majority of them are on Nintendo systems. If they can release CV games on PC-engine, Mega Drive, Saturn and N64, sureley they can release one on Gamecube? Otherwise they can get *&^%. I've been a Konami and Nintendo fan for 20 years, and unless Konami does something good on Gamecube and a Castlevania, I'll just have been a Nintendo fan for 20 years. Nintendo is more important to me then Konami.

Nintendo Gaming / For Australians: Gamecube Promotion DIY
« on: June 25, 2004, 07:37:17 AM »
I'm sick of the poor performance of GC here, I'm contstantly explaining to people that xbox is actually behind Gamecube worldwide. It seems the Xbox has taken the N64's place as the 'Mulitplayer alternative' to the Sony console, and it seems Australia is the xbox's most successful reigon, at Nintendo's expense. Well I'm going to do do something about it, (and I already am):

-I'm openly promoting Gamecube to people I know, espescially non-gamers, since they could pick up their first system for 150 bucks with a game. I run a Sunday school class, and tell the kids how great GC is - kids are the future, if they get into Metroid, that's another Revolution sold, too.

-Call stores and ask about their Gamecube stock, even if you won't buy your games there. Speak to the Manager so you know they'll be in charge of stock. Make it known that some people care about the GC, who knows, maybe it will get it some shelf space. I have unlimited local calls on my phone, so I'm going to start pestering all department and games stores in Sydney!

-Get your friends with other consoles to consider a Gamecube as a second machine. Everyone loves a new system, even just the novelty is great. Lend them games so they can see how good GC is.

-The real problem is Just getting the machine in front of people. Most people think GC is less powerful then PS2. Show them it's actually better: Metroid prime, resident evil zero, F-zero GX. (these games show the GC is more powerful then the xbox in some ways IMO)

-Maybe buy another Gamecube and lend it to people with Metroid or Zelda od Mario or Resident Evil or Monkey Ball 2, depending on who they are.

-Give Gamecube's for presents to anyone you can. you can probably get one for $99 if you look hard. get a second hand game and a cheap memory card, and it's $130 to go! I'm giving my xbox owning Brother in law one.

TalkBack / RE:Metroid Prime 2: Echoes Screw Attack Video
« on: June 17, 2004, 06:57:29 AM »
Actually, the 'Double Jump' Ability in Prime was not the same as any previous Metroid power-up.

The High Jump Boots change the height of Samus' Jumps, not the Number.

The 'Space Jump' is a move for when Samus does a spin jump, and can continually jump while still spinning. Since we never saw the camera spin everywhere, we can assume that Samus did no spin jumps in Prime.

The 'Double Jump' in Prime was a logical limited combination of the two: it allowed a second jump in the air (a limited SJ), which gave extra height (effect of HJB). It had the simple function of the High Jump boots, but with the gameplay style of the Space Jump (ie change directions mid-air)

And here's the Kicker: It was called the 'Space Jump Boots'!!

So stop your whining, it was a different power up.

TalkBack / RE:Iwata Looks to Australia

This is awesome! Go Itawa! I hope they disband NCA and stary anew.

I've got some sales figures from the Sydney Morning helrald, form January this year:
PS2: 1 million
Xbox: 400, 000
Gamecube: 100, 000

So it's not quite as bad as some of you said, but it's pretty damn bad! The problem seems to be that the Xbox has taken the N64's place (Black, large controllers, 4 controller ports, a popular 4 player FPS)

Nintendo Australia is not as bad as sega is/was here though. They launced the Dreamcast, famous elsewhere for for being cheap, for $500, with only the 33K modem, which they wanted to charge you to upgrade. For a comparison, at the time N64 and PS1 were $180.

As for how the N64 did, it really seemed to do well, espescially among younger people. I'd say it had about 40% of the market, based on store shelf space.

One last thing, last generation Sony may have market share, but they really lost out a lot in Australia due to piracy. Pretty much everyone had their PS1 chipped here, and it's not for imports. In fact, regardless of age, I've not met anyone who gas a PS1 and no pirated games here. Some PS1 owning friends of mine have never owned a legitimate game.

This generation, it's Xbox that has the piracy problem. Console modding is very popular, and you don't even need to burn a disc, just copy to the hard drive (usually a 120 gig hard drive is installed when modding). I even know people who download entire xbox games, then transfer them to the xbox hard drive.
