Well I've played Xenogears (fully 3D world) and I don't like it much.  It's too bland (very blocky buildings that all look the same) and the camera is terrible.  Half the time you can't see where you're going!  I prefer the pre-drawn worlds of FF7 & 9 with lots of background details.

FF6 was a 4 megabyte cart. It's safe to assume FF7 would be an 8 megabyte cart and look very similar to FF6... but with polygon people instead of sprite people.

Also, the battle engines would not be hi-res (640x480) like the PS1 version was (just thought of this today).

IMHO.

Elite and Battlezone weren't 3D.  They used vectors to *simulate* 3D.  That's still considered 2D.

The first game to create a 3D world (using polygons) was an old arcade game around 1983.  It was comparable to a PS1 in graphics quality.  Sorry, don't remember the name of the arcade game, but I can look it up if you really want to know.

General Gaming / RE:Official Nokia N-Gage Discussion
« on: October 23, 2003, 04:54:25 AM »

On the N-Gage's lukewarm reception by gamers, Nada Usina, general manager of Nokia Entertainment & Media in North and South America, blamed the media. "The games press is a pretty cynical audience," she said. But Usina admitted some aspects of the console would take getting used to: "It is interesting to see the things that are difficult to get over, things like the removal of the battery."

Blame the media?  Why don't you try blaming *yourself* for making a poor design?!?!?  Man, it must suck to have to be a Nokia apologist.

General Gaming / What if Final Fantasy 7 were on Nintendo 64?
« on: October 23, 2003, 04:33:27 AM »
How would it be different from the FF7 we actually got?  I thought of a couple things that would be left out:

- full-motion videos/pre-recorded movies (not enough room on N64 cart)
- the backgrounds would probably be flat, dull polygons like Mario64 or RPG rather than the hand-drawn art backgrounds (again, not enough room on N64 cart)
- Anything else?

I wonder if Square would have used the N64's memory expansion for hi-res 640x480 mode?  Probably not.

I don't understand why everyone keeps saying that.  I thought the Dreamcast's 128-bit graphics looked pretty darned good.  Certainly comparable to Final Fantasy 10 or Dark Cloud 2 on the PS2.

And yeah it was Rebel Strike.  After I got home last night I started reading reviews at atariage.com, and I discovered that the game is not all that great.  At least not something I'd be interested in playing.

(Please... no "you're an idiot, the game is great"-style replies.  I've already made up my mind to wait 'til the price hits $20.)

True.

Also Paper Mario lacked "fun" music (both outside & inside battle), interesting characters, a unique story, and fun elements from the original Mario games (jumping and collecting).

That's why I quit playing PM around hour 20.... and played Mario RPG over and over and over and... well you get the point.

Paper Mario is to Mario RPG

Zelda's Quest is to Link to the Past

Then why have them on your computer at all?

I have my own private radio station.  But would I buy the songs?  Absolutely not.  I'd rather erase every last song, and just tune in the FM radio.  I will not hand over money for casual listening.

Now "the Eagles' Greatest Hits" that's a different story.  I'll buy the Eagles.  I won't buy Britney.

Exactly.  The Original Metroid, Super Metroid, and Metroid Fusion are all adventure/exploration games.  So is Metroid Prime.  All that's changed is the view (3rd-person to 1st-person).

Metroid Prime was a lot of fun during the first 20 hours, but then it started to get monotonous.  That doesn't mean it is a bad game... just too long IMHO.  I think the world was too big with too many rooms to explore.  They should have shrunk it a little bit, but still an awesome game for those first 20 hours!

That's what I told the sales guy at gamestop today.  He was telling me all about the latest and greatest Star Wars game, and after his soliloquy, I said point blank, "I don't care how it looks...how does it play?"  He just went "Duh...I haven't played it yet."

I'm so tired of games that look pretty but play like crap.

We need to get the emphasis (and sales critters) back on the actual gameplay.  i.e Is it fun?

Maybe Nintendo was smart to get rid of Rare.  There's no point in having Rare if they can't get the games released before 2005 (end of this generation).

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Piracy: a cancer on the Game Industry. Must-read!!
« on: October 19, 2003, 04:32:22 PM »
As I said before, previous systems like Commodore=64 and PS1 and PS2 have been heavily pirated, but they were not killed. On the contrary, they were wildly sucessful: #1 computer of all time, #1 console of all time, and #1 console of the 128-bit generation (respectively). This seems to suggest that piracy HELPS a machine to succeed, rather than hurt it.

So I return to my earlier position: This little bit of piracy will have virtually no impact on the Cube. It's not going to die.

Yes, that was my point exactly.  Most people say that the Dreamcast died because of poor timing/competition from the PS2.  *That* was the most imporant factor.

I have a whole hard drive filled with songs.  But would I buy all those songs?  *Absolutely positively not*.  Sure I enjoy listening to Britney Spears "Crazy but would I buy a whole album for just that song?  No way.  The RIAA has its head up its ass if it thinks every song downloaded = money lost.  It just doesn't work that way.

Same applies to videogames.  99% of the games I've downloaded (NES & Super NES) are trash that I would not buy.  Nintendo's claim of $1 billion lost is a wildly inflated figure.

There's a difference between free downloading and buying.  I'm the kind of person who, even if piracy did not exist, I would not buy.  I'm more careful with my money than that.  So are most persons.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Are Games Getting To Easy?
« on: October 17, 2003, 05:14:11 PM »
I like the hard mechanics of old games.  There's something extremely satisfying about dying on Screen 1 of Mario Brothers or Super Metroid, and then, over time, learning to improve yourself to beat the game.  It feels like you've accomplished greatness.

There's nothing satisfying about just "walking through" a game... you might as well just be watching a movie instead... because you have not improved yourself.

General Gaming / Which Art style do you prefer? Xenogears or FF 7/9
« on: October 17, 2003, 08:03:54 AM »
Xenogears = A polygonal world overlaid with pre-drawn sprite characters

Final Fantasy 7/9 = A pre-drawn world (background) overlaid with polygonal characters.

ME:
I prefer the FF7/9 look. It's more artistic with greater detailed environments to wander around in.

FF7:

64x64.... how was I supposed to know that?  It's not documented on the Avatar Select screen.

Also, my file was only 2K in size... hardly huge.

Before FF7, RPGs were more reserved for hard core gamers and never peeked the interest of the majority of gamers. The release of FF7 was so different for many gamers, with its compelling story....

Disagree.  I think Final Fantasy 3 (alternate title: FF6) deserves that credit.  It was an extremely popular game and high in sales.

Remember... Final Fantasy 3 was *already* a system seller for the Nintendo 64... people bought N64's just so they could play the next installment.  When Square left the N64, it sent shockwaves through the gaming world.

Why?  Because people LOVED FF3, and they were looking forward to the sequel.  FF3 is the RPG that appealed to the majority of gamers.

You're still offering opinion.  Give me some facts.  Show me numbers to prove that Dreamcast was hurt in sales by piracy.

Anyway, I've got some numbers for you from November 2000:
Millions
of
Units Generation Console
---- 128-bit GameCube (not released)
3.0 128-bit Playstation 2
5.0 128-bit Dreamcast

As you can see, the Dreamcast was doing quite well... piracy was having no effect on sales.    DC was killed by PS2... pure and simple.  Piracy had NOTHING to do with it.

The most pirated machines in the world, Commodore=64 and PlayStation 2, are also among the most successful.  "Piracy kills machines" is a myth along with unicorns.  It doesn't happen.
