General Gaming / Burn out 2 progresive scan woes
« on: November 16, 2003, 11:35:44 AM »
I am using a modded D-sub cable, using the typical mod floating out on the web.

And I am having trouble getting Burn Out 2 to run in Progresive scan mode.

I hold down the 'B' button when I start up the GC but no option pops up asking me to set it for progressive scan mode.

Every other game I have with the PS option works perfectly, just not BO2

Anyone else have this problem?

BTW, My friend has an HD tv and BO2 works fine with PS on his TV.

Still, it is interesting that ghosting appears, you would think that the cable is still sending basically the same signal down the wires that it would be sending anyways to a HD TV.

It could be that the 2 extra wires that the Modded cable has to add is causing some sort of interference or being interfered with?

I don't know, this is purely speculation on my part.

All I know is that using a VGA cable for the mod has resulted in no ghosting what so ever on my screen, and I really took a good hard look.

Hey yah, I want that controller as well.  If you get it let us know if you like it.

That is, if I don't get it first.

I agree about the GC being the best  Nin system yet, it just has so much flexibility.  And there are so many different types of games available to be played on it, with the addition of the GPB of course

BTW, anyone else have that controller here?

Yah should be easy to do.  And then you could tell your wave birds apart.  Right now I am using the ol' masking tape with the letter 'b' written on it to tell them apart.

There is no 3rd party component cable, only Nintendo's.  So I think that makes you choice pretty obvious

Just read the review of D-sub Mod cable, and in it the review spoke of mild ghosting.  TYP thought that maybe the Nintendo cable was not shielded enough.

"The most likely cause is that the D-Terminal cable’s insulation was not designed to protect a VGA signal, though I cannot be certain."

Well that got me thinking, and since I had a D-sub cable hanging around, I decided to attach a good quality VGA cable directly to the D-sub using the mod described out there in the web.

It was a little more difficult to pull off and the end result a little less than cosmetically appealing, the VGA cable I used was a lot thicker than the D-sub therefore the D-sub shroud did not fit properly.  But, when I powered it up with Zelda I could discern no ghosting, hurrah!

As for why VGA cable splice method worked better I can only throw out a couple of guesses:

1. The RGB cables were a lot thicker than the D-sub, so signal propogation could be better, or...

2. With the VGA cable there are 2 other cables, V-sync and H-sync ground that are not included with the basic D-sub cable.  So by attaching those 2 cables to ground that could isolate the V&H signals better, removing ghosting.

3. Maybe a combination of the 2 made the difference.

Anyways, an awesome mod.  And I thank whoever had the brains to come up with it.  This cable has brought new life to all of my progressive scan games.  Man I still can't get over how good it looks!

yes the RCA is the red white and yellow cables, they are the cables that shipped with your GC.

You could order them from LIK Sang, they are a bit more expensive but they will deliver pretty much anywhere.

I am more excited about the bonus disc than the game.  I really want the 80s vector game on my TV.  When I heard that it was on the disc, I knew I was getting the preorder.  I will wait for reviews if I futher the investment and get RS.  Probably will though, I have a lot of money and like to buy games and never open them; yah and monkeys can swim with 50lb weights tied too their legs.

Anyone hear when the preoder disc is coming out?

Not according to 'Oldfart' <-a PGC forum poster, he is  a manager in a retail store and he says he gets a 1 in 4 return rate for the Xbox.

As for the Xbox having no disk utilties that is crazy.  You would at least need 'Defrag' and 'Scandisc'.  Maybe Xbox has a special filling system that would not need those tools.  Yes that is it, and they don't want to release it for the windows system.  That would be pure insano, would never fly.

It means that they didnt' sell as many units as they thought they were going too.  Oh well, I am optimistic that this could be one of Nintendo's biggest Xmas coming up.  Man do they ever have a lot of sweet ass games coming out if the current line up of games coming out can't sell systems, then I dont what will.

As for the consiparacy theory, I totally believe it.  Then again I also believe that there is a secret alien group called the greys building a human camp on Mars where only the elite and influeintial will be able to live.  Well the rest of us wallow and die in catastrophic enviromental world events.

Man I wish GC had KOTR.   I am sure every system has a certain amount of returns but you can tell just by looking at the internal pictures of the Xbox versus the GC that a lot more engineering and thought went into designing the GC hardware.  The Xbox design definitly gives off a half ass smell.  Man do I ever sound like a fanboy.

All loyalties aside Oldfart is right about the Xbox being a glorified PC in a big box.  And I don't mean in a PC in functional sense, because basically all the consoles are computers.  I mean in a structural way they are built and put together sense.   If you look at the internals of the Xbox your first impression is 'man this looks just like the inside of a personal computer.'  Long ass IDE cables, flat MB, onboard video, a standard PC DVD player complete , slow ass hard drive.  Not that there is really anything wrong with all of this, other than it shows a lack of effort on Microsofts part.   Man the Xbox is big.  I don't think that a lack of RPGs is the reason why Xbox sells so poorly in Japan, its because the Japanese can not fit the thing into their apartments.

Anyways, sorry about sounding like a fanboy.  It is just my two cents.  Ok a penny and a half.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Will Nintendo EVER go online?
« on: August 01, 2003, 07:01:26 PM »
Being able to play online games is the cats ass, and you all know it.  Know matter how good a computers AI is it cannot compare to playing against real human opponents.  That is just the long and short of it.

Nintendo

Can you hear me?

Give me online gaming

Give me online gaming now.

Connectivity is not the answer.

Give me a reason to buy that online adapter

Why the hell did they even release that thing?

I fell cheap and used by Nintendo marketing, "sure the GC can go online, just we won't make any games for it."  Evil.

Need more beer, bye.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Component Video Cable
« on: August 01, 2003, 06:52:00 PM »
I too have enjoyed the quality of picture provided by my component cables.  I don't even own a progressive scan TV, sniff.  I have not had a chance to compare an Svid cable with a component cable but I bet the difference is negligable.  Having said that, component cables rock!  Get them if you have the input for them, you will not be disapointed.  And after you get them, have fun switching from RCA to CC inputs the difference is night and day, seriously.

I got mine from Lik Sang, waste of money.  Eventhough they came in a cool japanese box.  Just get them from Nintendo directly if you can.  29.95USD I think.

Dude!

Run your GC on a direct Component input.

DVD gets the S-vid!

Where are your priorities man?

Seriously though the RCA box idea is not a bad idea.  A single piece of wire has more than enough bandwidth, oodles to run one video signal.  When you are talking as short of distances as we are, from the GC to the TV, bandwidth does not play into the equation.  And since the video signal is already being broken apart into 3 seperate wires you have increased your BW 3 times.  If you were running a longer line, like to your neighbours house, you would be more concerned with copper loss then BW.

The only difference between an RCA switcher and a Component switcher is that they change the color of the inputs and stick a different sticker on it.  Oh yah and they charge 1000 times as much.

The videophile and audiopile industy is rife with BS.   If have seen articles where they talk about copper skin smearing as a valid topic on sound quality, give me a break.  It is all in their mind.

Sorry did'nt mean to rant, but you should save your money and get the RCA switcher box.

Yo!

If you are serious about finding some specs on the MC you will need to take it apart.  I am pretty sure the memory card uses a flash IC, mostly likely a serial flash IC.  After taking it apart find the flash IC and take note of the letter and number combination written on the IC.  Do a search of that part number on google and see what comes up.  You might get lucky and get a spec sheet on the IC and using that be able to figure out all of the inputs and O/P of the card.

You might have better luck taking apart a 3rd party MC as they might use a more common/generic flash IC.

Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

The only problem I have with video games is not having enough casharonie to buy all the hardware and games I want.  Then again I should really finish off the ones I already own.  Working overtime and trying to maintain some semblance of a life takes away so much time from my video games *sigh*.

Can't wait for SC2 and Vjoe...

Actually I want the whole Capcom 5 lineup.  I want to import winning eleven too, but Lik Sang is sooo... explensive.

You might want to check out this website cheaphometheater.com.  They have quite a few receiver and speaker reviews there.  Including reviews on some speaker sets that you can order direct from the manufacturer, which saves you tons o' cash.  The HTD speakers sounded like they would be pretty good.

And if you are poor like me (although it does'nt sound like it) you can pick up some Logitech Z680's for like 450CAD.  They have a built in DPLII and DTS with optical inputs.  They sound pretty good to me, with loads of bass.

Umm...  thats the same trailer they have on the demo disc.

I liked the graphics in hoth and the flying scenes they looked on par with rebel squadron 2.

But, come on!  You actually dug the speeder bike graphics?  The trees looked like brown piles of dung flying by.

The character animations of the foot missons looked awfull as well.  They we running around like something was stuck up their arses.

I dunno guess Prime spoiled me, and I was looking for a more dramatic improvement over the RS2.  Which I guess is pretty hard, because the graphics were really good in it.

Sounds like it could be a very fun game.  Speacially that it sounds like you have to work together in the game, like a team.  Sounds like a funner version of guantlet, and Gauntlet was a fun game.

I dunno about having to use a Gameboy for the it though, way too much hardware for one game.  I wish Nintendo would get off of this Gameboy connectivity kick, I think it is lame.  Give me online gameing baby!

Sasky needs food, badly.
