I've recently started Xenogears 1. I'm playing it on Steam Deck. I'm liking the setting and characters so far. I had Kos-Mos in Xenoblade Chronicles 2, so it's cool for me to see that character in this game.

Working on Luigi's Mansion 2 HD and Paper Mario TTYD at the moment!
Also might play Super Catboy, that looks like a great 16 high-bit pixel art action platformer.

Funny that you should bring up the Switch version of Paper Mario TTYD, because I just rolled credits on it. Overall, I still like the game, and the addition of the warp pipe room makes this game SO much more playable than the original version (if you did the Troubles or remember General White, you know why). That said, Chapter 3 (aka the Wrestling Chapter) is still fucking awful, and that last boss fight is an utter slog. I remembered it being one of the hardest boss fights Nintendo's ever made, and I still stand by that now after it took my entire inventory to take down. It's just an utter battle of attrition, which gets tedious as you just repeat the same actions over and over again.

Not gonna bother with some of the new post-game boss fights Nintendo added because I really don't care.

Happy to report that I just finished Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on the very last day of the month! ;D I kept playing it with my mother when I was with her last month and this month. Paper Mario and the Zelda games are her all-time favorites. It’s been so long since she last played TTYD so that she couldn’t remember much, it was a really nice experience to see her recall a few small things while playing. At the same time, it felt like a new game for her as well. She’s quite old now and not in the best physical health, so I suspect this might be one of the last few special games we play together. Who knows—maybe Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom will have a similar effect.

I’ve got to say, @broodwars, I only died once, and that was during the last boss fight. I thought the game was pretty easy otherwise, but I never skipped any fights, which I think helped a lot. :) I do agree, though—the last boss fight is super tough!

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Will Nintendo Finally Drop the Switch Price?

Here's an interesting tidbit from the latest earnings results that might hint at a possible price drop:

https://twitter.com/pierre485_/status/1823723320036221349

"While Nintendo achieved 16% of its forecast for hardware, ordinary and net profit reached 27% of the forecast in Q1 alone.

Given these "low" forecast for profit, it's possible the company is anticipating a price cut on consoles and/or games this FY."

Most definitely, the design is fantastic.

I’ve seen some people say this is being released so late in the Switch's life not just because of the Switch Online controllers but also to offer a charging device for the Switch successor. It seems like the new system might still support the Joy-Cons but probably can't charge them natively. What's your thoughts on that?

6
I'm super happy that this game is being developed. I will always be happy when Nintendo adds more to their older, more niche series. I haven't gotten around to playing the remakes. Now I have more reason to do so.

I personally love 3D as well (shout out to Mario 3D Land for making me fall in love with its potential!). I hope it can return somehow. I was thinking of a home console too and didn't even consider portability. But since Nintendo merged home and portable play, my idea would have to include that too. Maybe it could be a device that docks to the home TV again, but this time with a graphical upgrade? There could be home console exclusive games if they don't play well in portable mode, and portable exclusive games if they rely on a touchscreen maybe.

Dreaming super big, maybe in the future internet connectivity will be so advanced that devices are no longer needed and everything is just streamed to any screen you possibly own (or your high-tech glasses that replaced your smartphone? 8) ). However, I think we are still far from that, probably 25-40 years away from a playable state of streaming. It almost feels dystopian thinking about it, actually. :o

I agree that any improved online functionalities on Nintendo systems would be nice!! They could have their own voice chat system and also support Discord, like other systems. I like the idea of them creating their own "basis" for things and then adding whatever is popular at the moment on top as an extra choice for the user.

Also, I just remembered - cartridges, CDs, or no physical media at all? ;) What does the perfect Nintendo system have? I'd probably say both would be "perfect". Maybe there could be cartridges again equipped with special chips, like the Super-FX chip! That type of functionality is lost with the mini-SD cards of the Switch. Being able to upgrade games through their cartridges could offer awesome benefits. Although, I'm not sure how that would be handled with digital versions of games...

This thread is all about getting creative and dreaming up the ultimate Nintendo console! What features, controllers, or play styles would make your perfect Nintendo system? Whether it's a wild new concept or just a powerful upgrade ;) I want to hear your ideas!

I'm not sure if I'd call this my "perfect" Nintendo console, but I've always been a fan of the Wii's motion controls. I really like how VR controllers work nowadays, and I'd love to see a Nintendo console with that control scheme minus the headset. Think 3D Joy-Cons that know the spatial room you're in and reflect your movements on the TV. Imagine a super upgraded Wii Controller. The PSVR2 has all the buttons for standard controls too, so combining that with Nintendo's game design could lead to some whacky ideas.

Picture a Mario Party mini game where players must line up behind each other to row a boat (I'm crazy, I know). Or how about a spatial Mario Paint? Wii Music's drums would work well with haptic feedback on the controllers. A Punch Out game where you have to physically move to avoid punches would be amazing!

In terms of features, I'd like to keep the retro NSO offering but with optional purchases and more systems like GameCube, Wii, DS, and maybe even 3DS with glasses-free 3D on regular screens (dreaming big here)! I loved when Iwata said the Wii was a virtual console capable of playing 20 years of Nintendo history. Let's do that again but for real, and keep it up with succeeding platforms. This is a bit off-Nintendo, but it would be great to see handheld games playable on mobile through an NSO app.

I'd like the option to gift games and send messages to friends (think SwapNote combined with recordings and screenshots you can attach)! A feature I miss from the Wii U is to suspend gameplay and bring up an internet browser to check walkthroughs. Bring that back with a quick new gesture or button. I'd also love for Nintendo to make their own middleware engine and make it open source (or at least readily available like Unreal Engine/Unity) so that even the smallest indies can work on Nintendo's machines with their own internal tools.

That's what I came up with off the top of my head. What are your ideas? Where are your minds leading to?

The crazy thing is, $400 today is roughly equivalent to $266.15 in 2006 dollars. So, if it were priced at $400, it would be similar to the Wii's price back then ($250).

Pricing is a tricky question, especially considering the weak yen currently. That could be an issue for Nintendo in the long run.

I don't mind the slowness of the forums at the moment. At the end of each day, I find myself looking at the forums. As I've grown older, I seem to appreciate the slowness more than the fast-paced streams preferred by younger generations. It's these long and deep posts, like yours, that I miss on platforms like Discord.

Reading your post made me reflect. It's interesting how my experience differs from the typical American Nintendo fan experience (assuming you are from the Americas, considering you read Nintendo Power).

As a European gamer, I remember when Europe often felt like an afterthought for Nintendo. The many languages meant that games either released much later or only in English. I had to buy magazines to help me through games because I didn't understand everything. Some translations, however, were special. For example, the German version of Secret of Evermore takes place in Grossostheim, Germany, the original HQ of Nintendo of Europe. The theater in the opening scene even featured a movie about the "Ultra 64," a nod to the upcoming Nintendo 64, which released here in March 1997 (it launched with Star Wars Shadow of the Empire, Turok, Mario 64, Pilotwings, and Fifa 64 on the same day!)

Reading about games was a significant part of the experience here. We didn't live on teasers because our magazines covered full game releases from the US (sometimes also from JPN). Many games never released here, so reading about them to the point of spoiling myself made finally getting them feel like finding treasures. It was always a gamble whether they would arrive or not. Without much video content, I had to imagine a lot of what I read in magazines. Seeing it in the actual games always made me say, 'I READ ABOUT THIS, DIDN'T THINK IT WAS LIKE THIS.' Even with the delays and the challenges, being a Nintendo fan in Europe had its own unique charm.

You make a good point, NWR_insanolord. As long as the Switch continues to sell well at its current price, Nintendo doesn’t seem to have much incentive to discount it just yet.

But I'm curious about the impact of a price drop when the Switch successor is announced or released. Would it make sense to drop the price of the Switch as soon as the successor hits the market? Could that affect the sales of the new system? For example, if people see the Switch being discounted when the successor is announced/released, might they opt to purchase the cheaper, older model instead of waiting for the new one? Of course there’s also the possibility that those who buy a discounted Switch might not be the same audience that would buy the successor immediately.

Or is it good enough for the launch that the current Switch owners are already planning to upgrade and are set on getting the new model regardless?

Still feels like a tricky balance. The decision to drop the price of the Switch could have significant implications for both old and new hardware this time around.

I've never played the original release, so I'm considering getting this on Switch. Zelda-like gameplay with an unusual setting and story sounds like a fun time based on what I've read here.

Reader Reviews / Better Together: It Takes Two Review
« on: July 03, 2024, 05:10:14 AM »
It Takes Two on Nintendo Switch is an awesome co-op experience. The Friend Pass is a game-changer and lets anyone join in without having to buy the game. It’s like DS-Download Play, but fully realized for modern consoles.

The story follows Cody and May, a couple on the brink of divorce, who find themselves magically transformed into dolls by their daughter Rose's tears. Guided by the eccentric Dr. Hakim, a talking book, they embark on an adventure to mend their broken relationship. It's a well-crafted, often over-the-top narrative filled with funny but also emotional moments.

Graphics-wise, the game is nicely optimized for the Switch. Even when compared to other platforms, it holds up well. The visuals are sharp and the game runs smoothly. I found this makes it easy to get immersed in the story and gameplay.

One of the most enjoyable aspects is the variety in gameplay. While it primarily focuses on platforming, each world introduces unique abilities that mix things up. There are flying sections, puzzles, and numerous mini-games that prevent the game from becoming repetitive and keep players engaged. Each world offers something new, whether it’s Cody firing nails for May to swing from, or navigating a magical world filled with surprises like riding a giant ghostly catfish or having a fistfight with a squirrel on a plane.

The puzzles are a highlight. There's a good balance between challenge and fun. There were several moments where we found ourselves scratching our heads, but the satisfaction of solving these puzzles made those "aha" moments rewarding. Constant verbal communication and teamwork is key in this game and makes for a great cooperative experience.

The audio quality is excellent, with high-quality mix production that enhances the overall atmosphere. However, the music didn’t have any standout tracks that stick with you after playing.

Replay value is where It Takes Two falls a bit short. Once you've completed the game, there's little incentive to restart unless you have a new friend to experience it with.

Here's how I rate it:

Gameplay: 9/10
Presentation: 8.5/10
Audio: 7/10
Replay Value: 6/10

Total Score: 8/10

Nintendo Gaming / Will Nintendo Finally Drop the Switch Price?
« on: July 02, 2024, 03:36:02 PM »
With the Nintendo Switch now in its eighth year, some shy official talks about the Switch successor from Nintendo themselves, and no price drop in sight, do you think Nintendo will discount it soon? If so, when do you expect this to happen and by how much? Could this potential price drop make the Switch the most successful console ever? With a price drop, Nintendo may reach people they haven't reached yet. Or people might start buying second or third Switches, or special editions more frequently. What do you think & what are your predictions?

Here’s a comparison of previous Nintendo and other console price drops:

PS2 $299 -> $99 (Slim)
3DS $249 -> $169->$80 (2DS)
Wii $249 -> $199->$99 (Wii Mini)
DS $149 -> $129 (DS Lite) -> $99 (DSi)

It's interesting that LM3 saw rising sales in Japan. Maybe people are buying LM3 first and then playing LM2HD (or vice versa) because they missed out on them before.
Edit: Just realized LM3 is just shy of 1 million copies in Japan!

My take is that a lot of us who used to spend a lot of time on internet forums have gotten older or our responsibilities and behaviors have changed. I guess social media and instant video content has also shifted how we interact online these days. I haven't been here in over 10 years, but I've decided to become more active again. For the past year, I've been revisiting old behaviors and websites I used to enjoy. :)

Hey guys! I want to try out something fun and different. Instead of always writing down what games and controllers you have, just post an image of what you got for the Nintendo Wii U!

This is my current collection! I also own Trine 2 as well as Nano Assault Neo from the eShop.

Now it's your turn!

Time flies by so fast! It's already 2013! :) In 6 months it's finally time for another E3 Press Conference! I just can't wait for it...! I hope Nintendo will show a lot of games again, because last year's E3 was phenomenal. They just went on and on with games, and now I own most of them and I am so happy with the Wii U and my Nintendo 3DS! It's hard to play through so many games, I wish I can finish most of them this year.

I want to make one simple and safe prediction for E3 2013, I think the newest Mario Kart game will be shown for Wii U. Oh man, I can't wait for that title. The Mario Kart series is one of my favorites of all time! If you have friends to play it with you, you will just have a good time! :D

I want to get Rayman Legends next month, then Monster Hunter in March. In May/June I'll be getting Darksiders 2 which I'm still very interested in. In between those times I will also download Fist of The North Star Ken's Rage 2 and hopefully The Cave too. Oh, and I'll be getting Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon in March for the 3DS too.

All right, as you can see, I have a lot of work to do in Q1 2013, LOL! :)

24
The upcoming *Wii* Virtual Console page has been removed from the Japanese site. Because the one for Wii U is now being made... This is a good sign.
Just be patient until the Wii U Virtual Console arrives. Good things come to them who wait.
