You were in a Nintendo Zone, which allows the 3DS to connect to the Internet without setting up a connection. That's why you could see your friends online, and that's why your friend's 3DS was prompted to update. The system update was downloaded on his 3DS through SpotPass, along with the new apps (in fact, they're not the actual apps, they're just placeholders that will take you to the eShop to download them if you click on them). This was in no way a result of a local wireless connection between your 3DS and his. Though you CAN send updates via local wireless if you're playing a game with someone via Download Play that requires an update, but that's the only way. I suggest you edit your article accordingly, because other sites are already reporting this misinformation as fact.
