TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - August 28, 2025
« on: August 29, 2025, 04:41:00 AM »

Semi-normal service should resume next week.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72290/nintendo-downloads-august-28-2025

Switch 2 is surprisingly popping this week with a couple of games coming over: Kirby and the Forgotten Land's Star-Crossed World DLC opening the door for a Switch 2 edition, plus Story of Seasons: Grand Bazaar, a port of Exit 8 (with an inexpensive upgrade), and even an Archives 2 title that is somewhat old school in nature.

On the OG it's Shinobi week, or if you really want to go full Japanese sicko there's also a Super Robot Wars game coming out worldwide with licenses intact. (Somehow.) Another questionable FuRyu RPG is also available in Varlet.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE WITHOUT JAPANESE: Do you a) live in North America, and b) know how to play Puyo Puyo? If so, then Japanese knowledge may be a detriment considering how dumb the Puyo Puyo characters can be.

TalkBack / Pokemon Legends Z-A's Newest Mega Is Mega Tecnico Hawlucha
« on: August 28, 2025, 05:25:54 AM »

Not as much gaga as a bed of nails and someone returning from Mount Coronet, but it works.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72210/pokemon-legends-z-as-newest-mega-is-mega-tecnico-hawlucha

The next Mega Evolution for Pokemon Legends: Z-A is a candidate for the Rey de Voladores title.

A video was posted today confirming Mega Hawlucha would be available in Z-A. The luchador-inspired Fighting / Flying type sports a more ornate mask with gold trim, as well as larger wings.

Although Hawlucha and Mega Evolution were both introduced in Pokemon X and Y (2013), Hawlucha is only the second Pokemon of that generation to have a Mega Evolution, and the first that can be reasonably encountered in a playthrough since the only other one is the Mythical Pokemon Diancie.

TalkBack / Pokemon Go Announces 2025 Wild Area Event
« on: August 27, 2025, 03:32:04 PM »

Ironic that something with Prankster in the main series jumped the gun.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72205/pokemon-go-announces-2025-wild-area-event

The next major weekend for Pokemon Go will cap a season focused on transformation.

The second "Wild Area" event has been announced with two components: an in person event in Nagasaki, Japan on the 8th and 9th of November, and a worldwide event the following weekend. The spotlighted Pokemon will be of the Dark and Fairy types, with the head being the Pokemon Go debut of the Impidimp evolution line. Full details are on the game's website.

The event will serve as a capper to the game's "Tales of Transformation" arc (from September 2 - December 2), which will focus on Mega Evolution with the release of the upcoming Pokemon Legends: Z-A and mark the free release of the mythical Keldeo following a paid release in December of 2022.

TalkBack / Pokemon Go Adjusting Leveling System For Trainers In October
« on: August 25, 2025, 05:00:00 AM »

Only takes nine years to double the level cap.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72201/pokemon-go-adjusting-leveling-system-for-trainers-in-october

Pokemon Go is blowing out the level cap for trainers in October.

An announcement on the game's website today has announced a change to the way levels for trainers are determined will happen on October 15, with the key effect being the raising of the maximum trainer level from the current level of 50 to 80. Levels of Pokemon - normally capped at the lesser of 50 or (trainer level + 10) will maintain their cap.

This will be the second time Pokemon Go has raised its level cap, with the first occuring in December 2020. The same formula for calculating experience requirements was largely used, and additional tasks were added to prevent particularly hardcore grinders from immediately reaching the new cap. The additional task requirements will now shift to levels between 71 and 80.

In explaining the change, the developers indicated a desire to give more opportunities to level and to rework existing rewards gained upon leveling, including adding free upgrades to item and Pokémon storage capacity at some level milestones (which normally have an equivalent cost of $2 US at worst). A full breakdown of the changes will be given before October 15.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - August 21, 2025

If it's getting posted on the title date, you know stuff has gotten bad.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72187/nintendo-downloads-august-21-2025

Live from the QEII - and not the cruise ship - in Halifax, it's this week's release list, thankfully Silksong free or else I would have had a conniption. Anyway, things this week are relatively light with just a few games on the dock: Herdling and Discounty (reviews by John and Allyson respectively) headline, with a lot of side-eye aimed toward Shantae Advance: Risky Revolution as we are forced to warn WayForward to dig UP, stupid. A cute little game this week is Ollie-Oop, a game about a skateboarding dog.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: A 50% increase in Switch 2 content with Aqua Jet, the 40 power / + 1 priority Water... oops, had my VGC notes out there. It's a Namco racing game that dropped on both Switch 2 and the OG.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE IN ENGLISH: Highly unlikely. It's an RPG with none of the interface translated.

TalkBack / Hollow Knight: Silksong Reveals September 4 Release Date
« on: August 21, 2025, 06:48:00 AM »

Finally.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72116/hollow-knight-silksong-reveals-september-4-release-date

The Silksong will be cued up in two weeks.

Team Cherry's "Special Presentation" was actually the launch trailer for Hollow Knight: Silksong which will launch on all platforms September 4, including Switch 2 and Switch.

An article at Bloomberg (gift link, subscription normally required) by Jason Schreier has confirmed the team was concentrating on making the game exactly how they wanted it, and the lack of updates would be because they would only be able to say "We're still working on it".

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72115/mega-victreebel-revealed-in-new-pokemon-legends-z-a-cg-trailer

The second new Mega Pokemon for Pokemon Legends: Z-A might ring a bell.

A new "found footage" trailer called "The Case of the Sweet Scent Incident" was used to reveal the second of the new Mega Evolutions for the game, Mega Victreebel. The Mega has a more bulbous base and was portrayed as constantly firing acid everywhere.

A Geoff Keighley show with a Bubsy announcement is the most on-brand thing you can imagine.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72110/switch-2-and-switch-games-revealed-at-gamescom-opening-night-live

The last Western trade show standing, Gamescom held a "kickoff" show tonight EU time with some new announcements for both Switch 2 and the original.

  • A new trailer for Cronos: The New Dawn (Sept 5, Switch 2) ran.
  • DotEmu published and Guard Crush Games developed "rogue-'em-up" Absolum will be available on October 9 for Switch.
  • It's Sonic's 30th anniversary and he's engaging in a mutual crossover with Pac-Man: Pac-Man and the ghosts will be DLC for Sonic Racing: Cross Worlds along with a themed course, while Sonic will return the favour as part of DLC for the Pac-Man World 2 Re-Pac.
  • The next remastered game from Nightdive Interactive will be Outlaws, a 1997 wild west FPS from LucasArts: the Switch will get the game and its "Handful of Missions" expansion in November.
  • A major expansion for Cult of the Lamb called "Woolhaven" will be available in early 2026.
  • Bitmap Bureau (Final Vendetta, 88 Heroes) have shown He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Dragon Pearl of Destruction, a 16-bit art styled side scrolling beat 'em up with co-op "coming soon" to Switch. A physical version will be available for preorder from Limited Run Games with delivery at some yet-undetermined point in the future.
  • LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight brings the man dressed like a bat's rogues gallery to Switch 2 in brick form next year.
  • Fabraz (Demon Turf) is the latest company forced to attempt to make chicken salad out of Bubsy the Bobcat with the announcement of Bubsy 4D (Switch 2 and Switch): no release date was given, but it appears an option will exist to use a "Bubsy 3D" mode as an upgrade.
  • Machine Games's latest Nazi-punching simulator Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will come to Switch 2 in 2026.

TalkBack / Hollow Knight Silksong Special Presentation To Air Thursday
« on: August 19, 2025, 06:46:58 AM »

At which point the sign can finally rest.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72108/hollow-knight-silksong-special-presentation-to-air-thursday

After a protracted development, an appearance at the last E3, and more begging in Indie World social posts than should be allowed by law, we may FINALLY have news on Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Team Cherry have posted a video on their YouTube channel that will go live on Thursday (August 21) at 10:30 a.m. ET / 7:30 a.m. PT. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has also teased a story to launch around that time about what has caused the seven year development time for the sequel to the beloved 2018 exploration platformer, meaning a release date may be imminent.

Silksong was featured in Nintendo's booth at E3 2019 (next to the now-shuttered live service game Dauntless) and has largely gone silent since, apart from announcing a Switch 2 version on April 2 and a deal for Microsoft's GamePass. It has also featured heavily in the marketing for an upcoming Xbox-branded handheld from ASUS.

TalkBack / Other Kirby Air Riders Details From The Direct
« on: August 19, 2025, 06:35:00 AM »

It's been a while, was Smash Run always just City Trial?

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72107/other-kirby-air-riders-details-from-the-direct

Other items of note from today's Kirby Air Riders Direct:

  • Unlike the original game, multiple racers will be available beyond Kirby: Meta Knight, King Dedede, Bandana Waddle Dee, Magalor, Gooey, Waddle Doo, Knuckle Joe, Susie, Cappy, and Starman were all shown as playable. Each character's weight (or lack thereof) will affect the size and performance of the stars.
  • Standard races will be capped at 6 racers with online, while the returning City Trial mode will feature online lobbies of up to 16 and local wireless options for up to 8 with the other slots filled by CPU riders.
  • City Trial itself will be a five-minute dash around the island of Skyah to collect powerups and a ride different than the weak starting ride before entering a "Stadium" to make use of the powerups. A default option is to have the Stadiums selected per user, with recommendations tied to the powerups collected. The Stadiums will feature support for Switch 2 GameChat as well.
  • Seven songs from the game - including the English and Japanese versions of title track Starlit Journey - have been added to Nintendo Music.

We're just out here breaking all the rules today. You don't even have to shake anything to Plasma.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72105/kirby-air-riders-opens-door-for-other-characters-to-use-copy-abilities

Kirby Air Riders will allow other racers to enjoy the privileges Kirby has enjoyed for more than three decades.

During a demo of Kirby's ability to inhale enemies, it was confirmed that the other available characters will have a functionally identical "Capture" ability to use abilities from monsters that spawn in the environment. The abilities will be tied to the B button rather than the controversial Y button.

Not all of the monsters will have abilities, as seen in the main Kirby games: these enemies will fire stars instead. Additionally, the Plasma ability will build charge automatically rather than by constant movement.

The coveted "pre-American Thanksgiving" slot has returned.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72104/kirby-air-riders-reveals-november-20-launch-and-developer-in-direct

We now have a date and a developer for Kirby Air Riders from today's dedicated Direct.

The Direct's last scene showed that the green flag will fall on November 20 for the racing game. It was also confirmed during the Direct that Masahiro Sakurai's Sora Ltd would be reuniting with Bandai Namco (in lieu of HAL Laboratories) to develop Air Riders as well, following the collaboration for the last three Smash Bros. games.

The game's digital preorder (payment on November 13) has gone live on the eShop, indicating an MSRP of $69.99 US / $99.99 Canadian and a 25GB file size requirement.

The Dreamcast, independent Sega, crowdfunding for AAA games... Everything Ryo touches dies.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72101/shenmue-series-to-debut-on-nintendo-systems-with-enhanced-version-of-third-game

Everything coming to Switch apparently includes Lucky Hit.

Publisher/distributor ININ Games have announced that an enhanced version of 2019's Shenmue III would release on a version of the Switch alongside the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series releases. No date was given but more details are expected at this week's Gamescom event.

The Shenmue series was an early example of both an open world game and in the case of the original, a game with a Hollywood budget: the original game for Dreamcast was reported to have a $70m budget. After the sequel released on Dreamcast and the original Xbox, the third game in the series had a crowdfunding campaign announced at Sony's E3 2015 "Conference of Dreams" (also having first announcements of Final Fantasy VII Remake and The Last Guardian) which raised a million dollars in one night.

TalkBack / Kirby Air Riders 2 Getting Direct August 19
« on: August 18, 2025, 05:00:02 AM »

Sakurai just cannot resist the siren call of a long show.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72100/kirby-air-riders-2-getting-direct-august-19

The third Nintendo presentation in four weeks has been announced and it's a single game show for something we know little about.

Kirby Air Riders 2 will be getting a dedicated Direct tomorrow (August 19) at 9 a.m. ET / 6 a.m. PT. The notice posted in the Nintendo Today app confirmed the show would be 45 minutes long.

Originally, Air Riders 2 was announced in April with a brief snippet of gameplay, a 2025 release window, and the announcement that Masahiro Sakurai was leading development.

Dodged a blue-coin shaped bullet there.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72093/chibi-robo-plugging-into-switch-2-gamecube-nso-library-next-week

The GameCube library for NSO Expansion Pack subscribers with a Switch 2 is getting another drop next week.

Nintendo posted a trailer tonight for Chibi-Robo revealing the game would be added in an update on August 21. As a reminder, the drop occurs worldwide simultaneously in a way that it should appear the evening of the 20th for North America.

The 2005 (Japan)/2006 (North America and Europe) release from the now-defunct Skip Ltd featured the titular small robot performing tasks around a family home while the family proper is falling apart at the seams.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - August 14, 2025
« on: August 12, 2025, 04:00:00 AM »

Live from somewhere in the 905.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/72091/nintendo-downloads-august-14-2025

There shouldn't be any question as to the biggest game of the week - for the first time since Wii U day 1, we can ask if you're ready for some football as Madden NFL 26 comes to Switch 2. Yes, even more than a first party game in Drag x Drive, in Nintendo's relatively inexpensive attempt to try something different with mouse controls on the S2.

For the OG Switch, we have a few things of note: a turn based Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game in Tactical Takedown, a couple of Toaplan collections for our resident shooter sickos, a Mages VN I'll probably be reading heavily on the bus home from The Centre of the Universe, and a Switch remaster of the 2008 PC RPG OFF. Also, for those of you who thought we were done with the "H" games on the eShop.... uh...

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: An Indie World show had several drops, including the seminal UFO 50, Tiny Bookshop, Is This Seat Taken?, and a crossplatform game in Bokura: Planet. Yes, we did end up with a Switch 2 release after all - or two since we missed Apex Legends. The Archives title was D-Day from Jaleco.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE WITHOUT KNOWING JAPANESE: I think so? It's an action RPG in Brandish (roughly Falcom's 9th franchise).

TalkBack / Switch Indie Support Still Strong In Latest Indie World
« on: August 07, 2025, 06:01:54 AM »

153 million consoles + paucity of dev kits = lots of original Switch games.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/71999/switch-indie-support-still-strong-in-latest-indie-world

The original Switch will still be picking up games into next year from independent developers as shown in today's Indie World.

  • Herdling, an exploration game about herding mythical creatures from the creator of FAR: Lone Sails will arrive on August 21.
  • Later this month, Pico Park 2 will receive mouse support in a free update.
  • The Japanese Indie World show confirmed the first day of Demonschool - the isometric RPG similar in style to the original Persona games - would be September 3.
  • Life sim Strange Antiquities was briefly shown alongside a September 17 launch date.
  • Undusted: Letters from the Past will be available in October.
  • Beloved science roguelike Caves of Qud will be available this winter.
  • Winter Burrow, an isometric exploration game based on snowy environments, will appropriately launch this winter.
  • City builder Go-Go Town! will be available in 2026.
  • Self-described "nightmarish life sim RPG" Neverway will be available next year, which features character sprite design from the artist behind Celeste.
  • Action exploring game Well Dweller will head down in 2026.

TalkBack / Switch 2 Gets New Titles In Indie World Show
« on: August 07, 2025, 05:51:18 AM »

The first Indie World had a few more things come over from the home office in Japan.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/71998/switch-2-gets-new-titles-in-indie-world-show

Although the Indie World did have an expected focus on original Switch games, some developers were able to secure Switch 2 dev time for games.

  • Puzzle game Exit 8 - announced only in a Japanese Indie World show last year but released worldwide - had the same result with a Switch 2 edition of the game coming "later this month".
  • Vertical scrolling shooter Ball x Pit revealed a Switch 2 version will be out in the fall. The Devolver-published title will be out on October 15 for Switch.
  • The newest title in the OPIS series, subtitled "Prism Peak", will be out this fall for both Switch 2 and Switch.
  • High-speed action game Ultimate Sheep Raccoon was shown for a winter release on Switch 2 and Switch; cross platform co-op for up to 8 players will be available.
  • Glaciered is a timed Switch 2 exclusive RPG about a diver who must explore under the surface of Earth 65 million years in the future where the surface is frozen over, and it will be out this winter.
  • Content Warning, the multiplayer sensation about creating viral horror videos, will come to consoles including Switch 2 and Switch in 2026.

TalkBack / UFO 50 Leads Charge Of Indie World Shadowdrops
« on: August 07, 2025, 05:41:00 AM »

So technically, there's 52 games and a demo in here.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/71996/ufo-50-leads-charge-of-indie-world-shadowdrops

Indie World shows are usually known for their shadowdrops and today was no exception as three games will be available shortly.

  • The last item shown in the showcase was UFO 50, a critically acclaimed collection of 50 games released last year on Steam: the link is that similar to Atari 50, all of the games were for a long-running retro game console. The main public face of the game is Derek Yu (Spelunky 1 and 2).
  • Also launching today is "Is This Seat Taken?", a simulation game focused on finding the ideal seating arrangements for various personalities in places like public transit or restaurants.
  • Tiny Bookshop, a cozy store management simulator, is also due today.
  • Although not the full game, a demo will be available later today for Halloween launch game Mina the Hollower.
  • The Japanese Indie World show announced a drop of BOKURA: planet, a co-op required puzzle game, on Switch 2 and Switch today, and its prequel BOKURA would be available in November.

TalkBack / Indie World Presentation To Air August 7
« on: August 05, 2025, 05:27:27 AM »

It's a relative quickie.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/71994/indie-world-presentation-to-air-august-7

Last week partners got the spotlight, and now it's the indie developer's time to shine.

An Indie World presentation has been announced for this Thursday (August 7). Like last week's Partner Showcase, it will air at 9 a.m. ET / 6 a.m. PT.

The 15 minute (approx.) presentation will cover releases for both Switch and Switch 2.

TalkBack / Nintendo Downloads - August 7, 2025
« on: August 04, 2025, 05:33:00 PM »

The only Switch 2 thing this week is the Drag x Drive trial. Oops, spoilers.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/71993/nintendo-downloads-august-7-2025

A week that somehow manages to be "not too busy" and "way too much for the first week of August" at the same time leads off with Gradius Origins (as featured in the March Switch 1 Direct), a game whose lasers are needed to take down the final boss of NES Pro Wrestling. For a different form of shooting, there's a remake of The House of the Dead 2 (caution: Forever Entertainment), or if you'd like the complete opposite of that you have a couple of anime options in the latest Demon Slayer adventure and Fate/Hollow Ataraxia.

Smaller things to watch for: Why does The Edge of Allegoria look like Pokemon RBY in HD and yet still isn't the most flagrant copyright infringment of the week, or Team17's Ritual of Raven.

THINGS WE MISSED LAST WEEK: How about a freaking Partner Showcase with Chilling By The Fire and, unfortunately, another reset of the "Directs Without Saga Reveal" sign. (Saga reveals CAN be avoided, Square Enix.) Apart from that, a couple of 3DS-era Harvest Moons got Switch versions and Taito's "Field Day" was the Archives release.

IS THE EGGCONSOLE GAME PLAYABLE WITHOUT KNOWING JAPANESE: It appears so, given that it's more of an action RPG in another version of Xak - it might be a little hard to follow if it gets talky, though.

TalkBack / The Missing Items From The Partner Showcase
« on: August 01, 2025, 06:23:45 AM »

From the "never happening" to "aren't you legally required to deliver this?", there were things conspicuously missing this week.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/editorial/71924/the-missing-items-from-the-partner-showcase

The Partner Showcase was definitely something straight out of 2022 (complimentary): plenty of things for the RPG sickos, some games making their Nintendo debuts, and Borderlands 4 getting punted to the sizzle reel. But as the first post-Switch 2 launch showcase? I can definitely see why it fell flat in some circles. A grand opening of a Monster Hunter... Stories and a closing of two Square Enix HD-2D games does not an all-timer make.

Still, there are a few things that had they been included in the show could have elevated this to an all-timer (apart from a date for Age of Imprisonment, that's a Nintendo Today drop waiting to happen like Prime 4's).

Hollow Knight: Silksong

Tapping the sign gives you +2/+1 and Trample.

Silksong is supposed to be playable at a museum in Team Cherry's native Australia this fall and in Microsoft's booth at Gamescom later this month, so in theory we have never been so close to Silksong not coming out. Nintendo has used a Partner Showcase for a top-tier indie release before in 2020 with the 1.0 of the original Hades, so it's possible that the show COULD have had Silksong if by some miracle it's ready to go. But three previous announcements are why I believe we are unlikely to get the drop on it in a Direct:

  • The original announcement in 2022 that the game would be on Microsoft GamePass day 1
  • The continued attempts by Microsoft and ASUS to tie Silksong to the fall launch of the ROG Ally X
  • Microsoft having a big show at Gamescom 2025

It feels like if anyone is going to shadowdrop Silksong, it's Microsoft. But they have something else to worry about.

Microsoft In General, Call of Duty In Particular

Speaking of Nintendo’s old neighbours, the only tangentially related product we've gotten from the genocide-abetting Microsoft on the Switch 2 is Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4. Given that Microsoft is publisher / owner of more than half of the top selling games on Sony platforms this year according to Circana, they should have been all up in this grill. Especially with Call of Duty 2026, which is due this fall and currently is only slated to launch on PC and systems that start with "PlayStation" and "Xbox".

You might recall that in order to get the ABK merger through the courts in... most jurisdictions... that Microsoft signed what they claimed was a 10 year deal with Nintendo to get Call of Duty on Nintendo platforms. As of now, the fruits of that agreement are 404: Games Not Found.

Now, it's entirely possible that all of the people who had Nintendo development experience were caught in one of their mass layoffs earlier this year. They sacked their head of player safety, for Arceus’s sake. Or maybe there was an "unprecedented partnership" (derogatory) with Microsoft that died as soon as Nintendo said a more polite version of "There is no *Carlin word* way we're letting you say our hardware is an Xbox". Who knows. Either way, it's not like anyone's going to bother to take Microsoft to court over it.

Hades II

The original "big Partner Showcase shadowdrop" could have been a natural fit to show up this week and give an estimate for 1.0 and the console release that was announced in April (Switches first). It felt like they had a natural setup for Hades II to appear at this show. But it probably wasn't going to happen.

The original Hades had its final patch on July 2, 2020 and went 1.0 on September 17 (the aforementioned Partner Showcase day). Hades II was originally going to get its final patch before 1.0 a few weeks ago, but apparently something happened because it got I guess what you'd call an "overtime patch" on July 23. IE: A week ago Wednesday. At this point, it's equal odds to whether it gets shadowdropped in the next General Direct or just shows up on the eShop one day.

Final Fantasy VII

We didn't get any kind of release window for the Kingdom Hearts version of FF7 in April, just news that the game was coming and possibly dragging Rebirth behind it in a few years before the trilogy capper shortly after the heat death of the universe. Although it got one of Nintendo's "Creator's Voice" spots alongside such luminaries as The Duskbloods, Hades II, and that WB game we don't talk about they never really spilled a release date their either.

Square Enix was tied with Bandai Namco and EA (somehow) for the busiest third party in the Western show with four games each, all of which are slated to launch by the end of 2026. They added new details about DQ I+II HD-2D and announced a Switch 2 patch for III in the Japanese show as well. Based on that, they probably didn't have space to talk about FF7 Remake... and that seems like something that could come up in time for a 30th anniversary two years hence.

Elden Ring

My feelings about Elden Ring and most of From Soft's development work since around the prime of the Wii can be summed up with a quote from former Olympic and world wrestling champion Kurt Angle: "Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of the Dark Souls. And if I could go back in time and make any developer in history tap out, it'd be Miyazaki." Any game best played with the old Xbox Live Silver membership is not a game I want to deal with. But apparently I'm alone in this regard, given that Elden Ring sold about 30 million copies worldwide and crashed game journalism while its multiplayer Nightreign spinoff is one of the best selling games of this year.

Elden Ring (and The Duskbloods) were two of the major 3rd party announcements in the April 2 Direct, and when this Partner Showcase was announced I made a farmer's bet with my roommate that Elden Ring would not only show up, but its release date (more than "2025") would be either the first or last thing shown. Its lack of appearance in the show is half the reason I wrote this in the first place, even if the announcement of 2 player matchmaking in Nightreign should have been a signal.

Now, we're probably going to see a general Direct in September and it's still likely to appear then if it is truly coming out this year. And maybe the Showcase was Bandai Namco (the publisher) clearing the decks. But if they dropped a date for Elden Ring in the showcase, the show feels a lot different.

Honorable Mentions

  • Professor Layton and the New World of Steam or Level-5 in general: As suggested by Willem, but not likely given that the new Inazuma Eleven is fresh off getting kicked to November.
  • Persona 4 Rerun: Let's see more than a minute of footage before we start freaking out about this game missing Switch 2. It'll take that long to beat Reload anyway.
  • Pokemon Legends: Z-A: It would have been funny to sneak this in under the Hyrule Warriors rule, but The Pokemon Company is effectively 1st party and Koei Tecmo isn't. And it got its flowers as the big fall Switch 2 release last week.
  • Monster Hunter Wilds: It barely runs on >$9000 PCs and you think it'd be ready to show on Switch 2? Not without a Scarlet and Violet level patch fix.

One simple number to blame for this: 20500.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/71926/nintendo-switch-pricing-in-united-states-to-be-adjusted-starting-sunday-as-canadian-increases-start-today

The United States is joining Canada in the group of North American countries who will see price increases due to "market conditions", or tariffs.

Nintendo of America issued a statement today that a "price update" would go into effect on Sunday, August 3 for Switch hardware, certain Switch accessories (called out twice), Amiibo, and the Alarmo clock. Nintendo Switch Online membership and game prices, as well as all Switch 2-related pricing, will remain as is.

A similar adjustment has gone into effect in Canada today, with the following changes:

  • Switch OLED MSRP +$40 ($450 -> $490)
  • Switch and Switch Lite MSRP +$20 ($400 -> $420 and $260 -> $280 respectively)
  • Joy Con sets and the Pro Controller +$10 ($100 -> $110)
  • Game MSRP +$5 ($80 -> $85)

Enjoy the next six months while you can, people who want to crow about the Wii U outselling Switch 2.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/71925/nintendo-releases-fiscal-first-quarter-financial-results-including-switch-2-for-first-time

Nintendo issued their first fiscal quarterly results of the Switch 2 era this morning, and looks to maintain the momentum of the new system going into the key shopping seasons.

All monetary figures quoted in yen, with a comparison based on current market rate of US$1 = ¥150.345 provided for clarification only.

Financial Indicators

Revenue: ¥572.636bn (approximately $3.806bn), up 132.07% compared to last year due to Switch 2 launch

Operating income: ¥56.928bn (~$362m), up 4.44%

Ordinary income: ¥95.822bn (~$637m), down 15.55%

Digital sales: ¥69.8bn (~$464m), down 13.51%

Mobile and IP revenue: ¥16.7bn ($111m), up 13.61%

Hardware Shipments

Switch 2's first quarter reported shipments of 5.82m units, a new company record for a first quarter, and leaving the system about 7.74m shipments away from passing the Wii U. In the accompanying material, more than 6m systems sold through in the first seven weeks of sale.

The Switch shipped 980k systems (about 530k OLED, 230k Lite, and 220k standard), for a new lifetime total of 153.1m systems: another quarter at that pace would see it pass the DS for Nintendo's most successful hardware and another 7m would see it pass the estimated shipments of Sony's PlayStation 2 until they find another million.

New Software

Nintendo only had two software releases this quarter in Mario Kart World and Nintendo Switch 2 Welcome Tour, and World (largely due to being included in the hardware bundle) shipped 5.63m copies in the first weeks. Welcome Tour was not broken out separately.

Catalogue Sales

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe continues to lap the field for Switch 1 software, tacking on another 660k copies for a total of 68.86m units life to date. The full Switch top 10 can be found here.

Other Announcements

A Nintendo Live event will be held in Fukuoka, Japan on the weekend of October 4; no similar events appear to be planned internationally at this time.

Splatoon Raiders, which was announced shortly after Switch 2 launch, still has a "TBD" release date, with everything else keeping their announced dates or windows.

25

Reminder: This gets into a Partner Showcase because it's published by Koei Tecmo in Japan.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/71896/hyrule-warriors-age-of-imprisonment-gets-new-story-trailer-remains-undated

Although it was a Partner Showcase, there was a trailer for one first party title outside Japan.

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment had a trailer in the showcase, showing off the traditional hack-and-slash combat with the Heroes and some of the Tears of the Kingdom-style building. A teaser for what may have been Fi was also shown.

The game is still slated for "winter", with more details promised in the future.
