TalkBack / Billy Berghammer Retires From Planet GameCube.com
« on: April 18, 2003, 07:50:23 AM »
As sad as it is seeing you go, congratulations on your new job.  For some reason I'm not totally shocked by this, you seemed to know the Game Informer guys pretty well when they showed up at the Twin Galaxies Video Game Festival.  It's been nice talking to you for the past few years, and actually meeting you.  As problem-filled as the festival was last summer, it was fun.

I didn't start coming to PlanetN2000 until it had the sexy blue layout and I read your E3 2000 (I believe) coverage.  It was by far the best look into E3 that I had seen.  After that, I was hooked, and kept coming back.  It's good to know that you will still be involved in gaming journalism in some form.  Don't want to see those skills go to waste in say... radio broadcasting

Hope you enjoy the new job!

Nintendo Gaming / Nintendo Should Release a Mario Compilation
« on: April 09, 2003, 01:49:38 PM »
They already did on SNES.  SNES owners could also purchase the 2 games on that platform, and then there's Super Mario 64.  Considering Sunshine is still for sale, there are only 3 games that they would be able to add.  I doubt you'll see it.

On top of that, they also ported Super Mario Bros. and Lost Levels in Mario DX.  They have ported Super Mario Bros. 2 in Mario Advance.  They have ported Super Mario World in Mario Advance 2.  They ported Yoshi's Island in Mario Advance 3.

That being said, by using my Gamecube and GB Player, I am able to play all of the Mario series except Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario 64.  Hardly enough to warrant a compilation if you ask me.

Nintendo Gaming / Why Does the Gamecube Disc Keep Spinning?
« on: April 02, 2003, 02:08:53 PM »
Because if you don't, you would need to wait for it to spin back up when you wanted to load something again.  That would result in huge pauses periodically.

And when the disc is not being used, like when using the Game Boy Player, it does stop spinning.

Yes, it's avaliable in Japan packaged with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.  Costly to import, but he said he wanted to be unique.

Man, that would look nice with my Spice GC.  So would the original Spice GBA for that matter.

Man, I'm going to shoot myself for not waiting.

The Q does, I believe.  But I don't think that helps your situation.

Nintendo Gaming / Just bought my 2nd Cube
« on: April 01, 2003, 09:43:13 AM »
I got 2 Gamecubes.  Got my first at the Japanese launch, got my second (pre-modded Spice) not long before Mario Sunshine was released in Japan.  Total price:  $600.

Nintendo Gaming / GBA SP Colors

They will probably make more colors in the future, for now I'd go with white, if you want to be unique at least.

Nintendo Gaming / GBA SP Case from Best Buy

It comes in gold, blue, and silver.  It holds the GBA SP and you can squeeze a couple games in there.  It's tiny.

Nintendo Gaming / Importing Soul Caliber

If your Cube is modded, then you boot in Japanese and access the memory card menu.

If you use a Freeloader, from what I've heard, you need a card from the same region as your Cube, and it will mix regions on the memory card (though using a seperate card for imports is recommended).

It's been answered in the other GB Player threads, but no.  When you're using your GC, the GB Player isn't running.

Yes.

You cannot use your GC and GB Player independently.  You can't even use it for Metroid to access the game and check for completion.

I'm planning to get it, but that doesn't really help you.

IGN Cube has impressions up for it.

Billy: No. I'll just buy the domestic version two months later to see what everyone was saying.

Sounds like me.

Nintendo Gaming / Game Boy Player: Import Vs. Domestic
« on: March 26, 2003, 06:54:43 PM »
Black wouldn't look too bad with any of them.  That's why they choose black as the one American color.  The modem and BBA are also only in black.

However, with that being said, purple still look better with purple, silver with silver, orange with orange.  But not everyone can pay nearly double just so two pieces of plastic look alike.

Nintendo Gaming / P.S.O Question
« on: March 26, 2003, 06:24:58 PM »
It's a game about collecting and trading.  The insane amount of replay value comes from the online experience.  I'd have to say no, but it all depends on the person.  I would still enjoy it, but I know when I first had PSO for DC and the BBA work-around wasn't known, I didn't touch it.

Nintendo Gaming / Game Boy Player: Import Vs. Domestic
« on: March 26, 2003, 02:11:30 PM »
All they got in were platinum?  Surprising.  Glad I went with NCSX then.  I have a Spice cube, wanted a Spice GB Player to match.

All the disc does is tell the system to access the hi speed port.  After that, the disc stops spinning.  You can take it out, swap in a different disc, doesn't do anything.  So it's very possible that using a US start-up disc with a Japanese GB Player will work, but you're better off just paying another $20 for a Freeloader.  I really don't see why that idea has become popular, but it really wouldn't be worth the trouble.

Nintendo Gaming / Game Boy Player: Import Vs. Domestic
« on: March 26, 2003, 08:57:50 AM »
Not too outrageous.  VGD was selling for $60, had a deal to get 2-day shipping for $5.  But they couldn't garauntee me color, so they didn't get my business.

NCSX was selling for $70, as was The Rage.  But then add shipping, and you're hitting $80s.  Japan Video Games had it for $60, but their shipping was at least double everyone else.  $42 for overnight, even ground was running $15-20.  So I passed on them.

Where are you buying from?  VGD?

Be sure to check out Wal Mart's website.  They occasionally drop games to dirt cheap prices.  Bass Fishing was recently less than $3, and I got Space Channel 5 for $5, shipped.

Nintendo Gaming / Game Boy Player: Import Vs. Domestic
« on: March 26, 2003, 06:20:35 AM »
The import GB Player does have a boot disc, so in order to use it you will need a Freeloader or Action Replay, unless you want to mod your system.  All the menus will be in Japanese.

As for the disc, there have been a lot of people wondering if they could buy a replacement disc and not have to boot in Japanese each time.  The other thing is, some people are wondering if the hardware is the exact same, and by using a different disc, it gives you the American menus.  No one will really know until they get a US GB Player, unless someone can get Nintendo to talk about importing, which isn't likely.

You'll need to wait until PGC or IGN gets ahold of one, and then ask one of them to try for you.  But if you're planning on importing, be prepared to be using the Japanese disc forever.  I wouldn't hold your breath on a US start-up disc.

You could also wait closer to the US release.  My GB Player cost me $83 with 3-day shipping.  The US version costs $39.99.  Prices might go down if you avoid the initial rush.

Nintendo Gaming / GameShark...Worthwhile?
« on: March 25, 2003, 03:50:45 AM »
I wouldn't say it's too reliable.  GS allows you to do things that you game was never meant to do.

I had a N64 one.  It was nice to unlock the wrestler in Revenge (I believe), who you couldn't get otherwise, and go across the dam in GoldenEye.  For a while I was using it with a different save file, and messed around that way.

Then one day I was messing around on the 3rd Zelda save file.  It was neat, some items appeared that were not in the game, and with Japanese text.  So I played around a bit and then one of the times I booted the game, everything was gone.  The first save file which I had completed the game, and the 3rd which I used for GS, all gone.  Needless to say, I never used my GS after that for anything other than playing imports.

Is that reliable for you?  You might get older Pokemon, you might lose all of your Pokemon.  My suggestion is that you wait.  Pokemon is a game of collecting, and once you have everything, there's no point to play it anymore.  But if you really want those guys, I'd buy the other Pokemon version.  Use your Gameshark on one version, and then trade them over, just in case anything goes wrong.
