TalkBack / RE: Independent and Objective Ratings System Initiated
« on: November 30, 2004, 08:14:15 PM »
It's a shame that we can't get an independent ratings board that's less uptight. It seems to me that this organization was founded on the principle that the ESRB wasn't being strict or harsh enough on games, when my view is exactly the opposite.

Well, in all fairness, the DK CG series sucked to begin with.

Game Boy - around 150 million sold worldwide; DS = 2 million so far in Japan. And most of the public doesn't really know much about the DS anyway. I'm guess once it is out for a while in the US at least it will just sell like crazy. The average dude is going to throw his GBASP in his bed and run out and buy one of "those new ones that go online and and you can touch it and stuff."

Yeah, but Halo's a game distributed on optical media. The DS is a highly advanced and expensive piece of hardware. As soon as the final product is finalized, they can press the optical media in almost no time. Hell, Bungie could considerably crank out ten times the number of copies and flood the market if they wanted to. After a game is finished, the most time consuming steps are packaging and distribution.

The DS assembly process on the other hand, takes more time and, generally, you don't want to overshoot your sales and end up with a bog bill for making, packaging and distributing a bunch of systems that didn't sell. With the North American Launch, that's somewhere near three-million units worldwide, in about one month. Pretty impressive for a handheld.

www.ilovebeams.com
www.iloveknees.com
www.iloveskis.com
www.ilovekeys.com

It's pretty funny!

Actually, those domins don't seem to be registered to Nintendo. I doubt that nintendo would do an "all your base" reference.

Did anyone happen to figure out the password for Orbos Labs web site? I'm fairly certain (considering the speed) that the login.php file(at this point) just takes you to invalid.htm, but I could be wrong.

Hey, I was jsut wondering if anyone's having problems viewing PGC. Whenever I try to go to the main site, it loads the top logo image, but then hangs trying to connect to "lol.digitalagemedia.net," which I assume is a banner or something. It never timesout, so my browser is left hanging until I hit stop, which does not load the rest of the page.

I've tried turning off JavaScript, but I get the same problem.

« on: July 07, 2004, 09:39:06 AM »
It is indeed the super-tough Japanese version of Super Mario Bros 2, as the screenshots on the Famicom Mini page reveals. However, I'm more interested in knowing if the Metroid port has the original Famicom Disk System soundtrack or the US soundtrack (Which had some instruments stripped from each song since the carts were smaller than the FDS disks), since it was the US versions of the songs that popped up in all releases of the other Metroid games.

Pictures are working fine for me. Anyway, yes, fullscreen is PRO version only. However, "Save as Source" is a feature of the free player.

It actually does have such a function: http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Cupertino/6324/saveas.png

It can also support Full Screen Playback: http://www.geocities.co.jp/SiliconValley-Cupertino/6324/fullscreen.png

I'm all for DiVX too. It's a great technolagy, it's just that some people have trouble with it.

The formats of the videos bug me the most. I really wish that PGC would try to stick to formats that work well on all systems, like mpeg or mov, and stay away from those which don't or are generally buggy.

WMP is the biggest no-no in my book. It technically works on othr platforms, but very slowly. And because of this, the audio gets off sync. It also seems that WMP files need a higher filesize to maintain the same quality as other formats. DiVX is another almost universal codec for video files, and plays just fine on my computer (an imac from 1999 wit MacOS 8.6), but there are those who have problems with it.

MPEG is the most universally-stable format, but its file size is a lot larger that Quicktime for the same quality. Quicktime works well enough on both systems. My friend's Windows 98 machine handles Quicktime files about as well as my iMac does, so I would expect that current-generation Windows machines will have no problem with it.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Announces NES GBA SP, Plus Retro Games
« on: March 29, 2004, 04:14:00 PM »
I wish I had $100. I've been putting off getting the GBASP, it's too thin, I don't like the more "clicky" buttons, and there's not built-in headphone jack. But, considering I just lost my old GBA, this may be a better solution. They should drop the price a bit though, I don't know how I can justify buying a GBA for the same proce as a GCN.

One would assume that NCL would just allow NOA to make the call in these situations regarding the US market.  I mean who's going to know more about the North American market?  Americans who live in the United States or Japanese guys who live in Japan?  When it comes to anything regarding the North American market be it advertising, price, console colour, etc NOA should call the shots.

Well, when you look at current economic factors, the dollar slid against the yen and the euro today, AGAIN. The dollar simply has less buying power worldwide. If NCL needs money from NOA for reaserch ande development, each dollar will buy just a bit more than half of what it would three years ago. In terms of local stuff, marketing etc, the only hampering factor to buying power is inflation. NOA more or less can buy the same amount of maketing it could three years ago.

Doesn't really matter. Political advertisements on either side are bound to alineate about half of the readers. If you're not reaching voters, the revnue from such ads are really not worth decreased readership.

TalkBack / RE:Sammy Claims Majority Stake in Sega
« on: December 08, 2003, 12:55:02 PM »
I believe that the article is mistaken. In order to achieve a majority, one must obtain a figure higher than 25%. One could presumably read the article to mean the Sammy has 22.4% of the shares over the fifty percent, making their total holdings in SEGA 72.4%, but other articles have used more percise language to identify the figure (22.4%) as the entirety of Sammy's holdings. In this case, the word "plurality" should be used.

But Sammy is trying to take over SEGA, as other articles have pointed out, but they have no idea who will sell the the other 28.7% they need. This is not necessarily a bad move. SEGA makes pachink machines, Sammy makes Pachinko machines. I'm sure business under sammy will be business as usual for SEGA.

Just for my own little piece of glory. I unoffically got one point on game 4 for my guess of BattleToads Double Dragon for the NES, which contained all three of those songs. However, Jonny could not conform this, which is reasonable. But at least I know I'm right. And my brother, who guessed it first, wants to kill him (I'll hold him off for you Jonny)!

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Shuns Euro Imports Again
« on: August 04, 2003, 12:53:19 PM »
Nintendo of Europe is resposible for all countries in western Europe, not just the United Kingdom. They have the responsibility of translating the game into four diffrent languages (French, German, Spanish and Dutch, I think), and usually try to fit all five languages into one game pack. For a game that is programmed to only output English, this can take some major programming, and the translation time is considerable as well.

That having been said, Europe is the biggest market for video games, as it spans multiple countries. You would think that the smart thing to do would be to have Nintendo of America be responsible for the UK, and just have Nintendo of Europe cover the rest of the western world.

Nintendo could also try releasing games in all languages simultaniously, if they're that worried about importing (Sonic Adventure 2 anyone?). If they came up with the scripts early, they could work on translations while the game is being programmed, and the only diffrence between reigons would be the default language and the reigion lockout code.
