Pure White and Clear Black 3DS Units Coming to Japan
« on: September 25, 2013, 11:12:43 AM »

The original 3DS isn't dead yet in Japan.

Two new colors for the original Nintendo 3DS line, Pure White and Clear Black, are set to release in Japan on October 10 for 15,000 yen. When they release, that will bring the number of available color variations for the original 3DS to five.

Recently, Nintendo discontinued the Ice White and Cosmo Black variations of the 3DS. These new units seemingly replace those old units. While the difference between the discontinued and new systems are negligible, the new units do have noticeably glossier surface. There is no word if these two colors will be released outside of Japan.

From the names, I was hoping that these would be translucent. What ever happened to translucent game systems? Was that just a fad from the 90's?

Apple over-saturated the clear plastic market by the early 2000s

Ha! I thought it was going to be translucent for a moment too. It is too bad they don't make systems like that anymore, even as limited editions. I guess we didn't know how good we had it during the GBC, N64, GBA era in that regard. Nowadays, the scheme seems to be release three or four colors and never make new colors again. Simply phase those out and have introduce a color that's only a slight shade different from the one you discontinued.

Going by the product shots, it seems like these will be *less* translucent than the originals. The originals had that clear plastic with silvery color embedded, whereas these seem to be solid.

Same here, but it seems like it was a fad so most people today don't want to be reminded of it.  I likes what I likes regardless of "fads" so it annoys me in this case (but I can't be too upset since I win out more often with the I hates what I hates category).
