TalkBack / Re: The Indefensible Position: Stop Reducing Lara's Rack
« on: August 05, 2011, 09:56:14 PM »

It wasn't her ingame model which dictated her appearance, it was the assortment of pre-rendered promo images and magazine ads which defined her. Can't blame the fidelity of the game at the time, she was a consioucly engineered piece of property.

Great article though, "The Indefensable Point" is a great approach and did an excellent job at pointing out that bust size /= modesty. What the article could have approached was how they tried to grab free press from proclaiming that the character was now more "sensitive" to real women aka less "Barbie Doll," only to resume prancing her around in daisy-dukes and what may as well be a J-Lo low neck top with jiggle physics. Physics that I can garantee were the first "milestone" in their development agenda.

I don't have a problem with any component of the character really, if it all existed in a vacuum. I have a problem with the hypocritical "suits" cleverly double-dipping their attention with hollow sentiments of "sensitivity towards women," which I recall from nearly every pre-release interview for each of the games released since the Ps2 hit.

Its almost demonic really - "Shes evolved into a genuine role model for girls now" [paraphrasing] "*Ahem* Now watch dem [self-censored] BOUNCE LIKE SHE HAD THE HICCUPS BRAH!"

TalkBack / RE:Wii Overtakes Xbox360 In WorldWide Sales
« on: September 13, 2007, 09:39:56 AM »
I for one like the Wii because its a dose of reason and logic in the midst of the most phallic race of power I've ever seen an INDUSTRY play to. Seriously, the money to be made in deceiving the gaming public has been quite good for Sony, and really that they are selling anything to people that are in any way forgiving of their nefarious ways is upsetting to me. I only hope the trend continues against their arrogant favor. Not because I'd rather see it with Nintendo or anything, just that I refuse to let Sony dash my expectations of the world.  And the 360 is broken. Period. Worst made $300 piece of equipment you may ever find that isn't a CAR  thats been totaled.

So Nintendo stands, quietly nowhere in the middle this, somewhere off in left field minding its own P's and Q's. Its overpriced for what it is, but then again maybe not - I would come home from work earlier this year and find my parents playing on MY Wii, having a splendid time with Wii Bowling, almost sheepishly telling me that they couldn't wait to ask. That was a great moment, my parents sneaking time in on MY console. Something about that moment brought something full circle to me, and was actually a little eerie.

They have their own now, BTW.

Plus, don't buy into this HD nonsense, please. You know how much money is made on each HDTV sold? Enough for the industry itself to offer incentives and kickbacks for ANYTHING that will broadcast in HD- networks, TV Shows, and I'm supposing that includes consoles as well (that don't see a price break despite the stipend).
Screw that noise. Call me in five or six years when they aren't at least %100 markup and then I'll be concerned about HD, when I wont have to bend over while buying one.

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Increases DS Production
« on: December 29, 2006, 05:46:27 AM »
I work in a gamestore in total hickvilles, USA (less than 100k people). We got three main shipments of DSlites the last two weeks before christmas, one of 22, the others around 18. Neither lasted more than 48 hours. On any given day we fielded 50 - 80 calls for DSlites, and probably even more about the Wii. We even had a supplementary shipment of 12 pink DSlites 3 days before christmas and sold thru those in a day.

Its amazing, by comparison there was virtually no interest in anything else except Guitar Hero. I'm sure Microsoft did pretty alright, but Nintendo amazed me with the buzz they've generated. Unless the Wii is a total flash in the pan (and I mean TOTAL) Nintendo is swinging two solid haymakers against the competition. What's particularly great to see is when I'm describing the Wii to parents, you can tell the idea clicks with them and suddenly *they* want it even more than their shallow "too cool for kiddy games" tween-bastard children. "Santa's" motives suddenly change when its games they themselves want to sit in front of.

holiday '06 = Nintendo FTW

TalkBack / RE:Nintendo Offers Wrist-Strap Replacement
« on: December 15, 2006, 08:19:21 AM »
So, is this still considered a real problem? I mean, I get sweaty hands as bad as the next guy (if not worse), but I have no fear of flinging this thing around. If I've ever had a problem with controllers, it isn't sweat, its the death grip I have with the fingers that are holding the controller. When I take breaks from gaming, I'll rub wipe my hands off on my pants or something, but its really a break to give the backs of my hands a rest because of how intense my grip is on the damn thing.

Seriously, Mythbusters needs to get up on this BS and show what kind of velocity this strap can actually withstand. Its strong. Or just a video of people slinging these things around like wild would suffice. Grrr its so stupid that this is either A) Fake news perpetuated by Nintendo's competition or B) Real news that people actually have been screwing up so bad that even the strap is not saving their epic fail.

Really - Nintendo? Send replacement straps with matching helmets... there are obviously more people with "special" needs than maybe first thought.

Since when did Nintendo fans turn into graphics snobs?
hhhmmMMMM?!?!?!

..but I agree, that's rather bad unless theres somethings really going on in those screens. But if it looks like this, plays like buttah, and throws some serious PCP-induced action my way, I'd be more than happy to partake.
Also worth noting... both platforms are 16x9. yet these screens aren't. could be an indicator of the thought put into selecting their first screens (or lack therof).

TalkBack / RE:Sony Puts Lik-Sang Out of Business
« on: October 25, 2006, 01:57:23 PM »
The obvious joke here is that Sony may have a point when it comes to personal injury/death with the amount of power that thing brings down.

But really, its quite funny that Sony refers to their goods as "grey market" when purchased thru Lik-Sang. As though Lik-Sang didn't purchase them through the exact same means as Best Buy, Wal-Mart, or any other retailer.
Sony could EASILY file an injunction to prevent Lik-Sang from redistributing its goods, or - I know this may surprise some - NOT sell three 600 unit pallets to the a Mr. Obvious Alias residing at
Broadway Centre, Room 2104, 21/F
93 Kwai Fuk Road
Kwai Chung, NT
Hong Kong

But Sony has to do it their way.
Like, take Nintendo. I thought they were bitches to get the GBA reader/writer taken from LS, but they had good reason, and they sought to fix the issue. I beleive they even recovered some "losses and damages" BS in the matter.  LS however is not overreacting now, because Sony chose to sue to set a precedent, and follow through based upon that. Now region J PSPs can be illegal to distribute in the same vein - that the adaptors haven't passed some regulation or whatnot. Funny, any Japanese retailer can price gouge without hesitation, limit, nor any need to restrain whatsoever. But LS won't be able to export them?

How incredible to see LS call out Sony's execs. I might beleive they purchased them for the reasons given, but still - if somebody's screwing up, you don't hand them your money. Not where *I* come from, at least.
"We are very serious about the privacy of our members!" -from Lik-Sang Website. Its just text, but seriously, they're going out of business or they wouldn't rat. Awesome last hurrah tho. I hope PGC can secure somebody else soon!

TalkBack / RE:Wii Message Board Explained
« on: September 30, 2006, 08:57:20 PM »
Theres a lot of good arguments against Nintendo no being online, and I can't necessarily disagree. That being said, Nintendo has expressed a great deal of concern over the online experience, and I can see where they're coming from as well. Some key scenarios come to mind:
A) you bring home a game and its stale, boring, generic, but by golly its the first one online! For Nintendo to be introducing new people to the gaming experience, you can't just give them "insert racing game name here 2006." It will almost certainly be a first party "killer app" and the online component will no doubt be online and rewarding, even if it ends up emphasizing to 3rd parties how much better Nintendo's own software will sell.
B) you're a parent and your kid is subjected to playing against me online and learns a lot about the english language they've tried so hard to shield them from.
C) EA drops some fatal bugs into the mix, and your forray into online gaming ruins three (videogame) seasons of trading, playbook making, or disables your Wii messageboard entirely.
I know the last one refers to the PSP and not the same kind of robust XBox Live kind of platform, but the point remains; if everything works the way Nintendo has it planned, they'll have the time to get it right.
But I'm a little sad to see no online support early, but its not like I'm missing anything, the only game I still play online after all the new has worn off is Enemy Territory.
Take that for what you will.

Reguarding online, I'm not really put off that they haven't put anything into motion yet. I mean, having *games* is far more important to me than having games online, and probably to Nintendo, too. That said I'd be shocked to see the first online game come out any later than march.

« on: September 16, 2006, 08:05:02 PM »
Well, theres nothing new to the GCN version, because its still the same. Unchanged. Just like you got in Wind Waker.
From what I've heard its basically not in development anymore, and its game assets are basically frozen.
As for the opinions: Its alright to let them think that everything they know is automatically better than anything new. Nintendo after all is known for screwing franchises up *cough Metroid,* and regularly demonstrates they don't know what they're doing *cough cough DS,* nor should we trust in them our beloved Zelda *cough Wind Waker cough.*

As for me, I'm not sweating it.

TalkBack / RE:Wii Details a Bit Early
« on: September 14, 2006, 02:56:32 AM »
You know people, you're all right, what an unfair price. This story is probably bogus, but seriously you're quite funny. I mean, the Wii doesn't really put anything in its plastic shell. Microsofts got stuff that needs FANS that still can't cut it, Sony's got stuff from TEH FUTURES OUTER SPACE!!1! By comparison Nintendo has practically NO graphics card or anything, right?

Or maybe everyone needs to look beyond the glowing tube to try to measure the expense incurred. I mean what, if not flashing pretty images, accurately represent quality? Because, you know, that gyroscopic technology thats had virtually NO previous consumer level implementation definately wasn't costly in R&D and new process manufacturing & fabrication. Nor the orientation technology, I mean, we've seen crap like that ALL OVER the place.

I would believe it if it this console strains Nintendo more than any previous they've put out. They're just putting their money where it belongs, however, and where nobody else has really bothered to before - the human interface devices, rather than simple processor upgrades.

Let me offer some evidence to this in the form of a quizlet. What are the two consoles, already released or pending release, that arent feasably emulatable?

I don't know if this is detective work on the part of PGC or not, but to whomever it may concern: Good job. This is totally something I would've skimmed straight over, but looking at it I don't think one could conclude much else from this.

You know, and maybe I'm a little giddy seeing this, but this is exactly the kind of thing I wanted to see just to be sure that Nintendo isn't screwing around with the online biz. If this all pans out, I'll have had no problems with them having been so lax in the GameCube's life. The line "We'll implement online functionality when we think the market is right" won't just be BS, and they'll actually sound like they knew what they were doing.

TalkBack / RE:Madden NFL 07 Out Now
« on: August 23, 2006, 02:34:00 PM »
Alright, fine, I have a legit reason not to like Madden:

Its fans.
Alright, I'm kidding. But seriously, call me out on BS if your don't like my reason for not liking Madden, but anybody that defends EA or tries to explain them out of looking like corporate evil manifest needs to backtrack the news stories a bit to read about their employee treatment. Theres no names to call anyone or anything, but seriously, educate yourself. EA is one company that definately doesn't deserve anybody in their corner, reguardless of if you enjoy their games.

Sega has (and Nintendo to some extent) had some horrible stories about employee treatment (their infamous "empty room.") The difference to me is that their shrewd practices point to an actual direction that supports creativity. An asshat can still be a good artist.

I'll give you that Tiburon definately knows what the heck its doing, but Westwood did too, remember them? Its not GOOD that EA looks for, its MONEY MONEY MONEY. Nor is it talent, its productivity, and the only reason why Tiburon is still around is because they've bent in EA's direction in production. Their employees haven't peeped about being crushed into the ground at crunch time, and they can maintain size and still release a new game, I.E., "update." I'm not picking on them for being the only ones - what was once Maxis has become a sad extention of EA's "philosophy", putting out one game and then six or more expansions. Nintendo isn't innocent either, but for them, Mario Party is an exception rather than the example.

Also, anybody remember when EA made an attempt to literally "steal" ubisoft? The french government is the only party to thank for that to have not gone thru. Seriously, their rap sheet reads like Enrons right before they tanked.

TalkBack / RE:Madden NFL 07 Out Now
« on: August 22, 2006, 07:55:12 PM »
Maybe I can shed some light into the anti-EA/Madden demographic.

Alright, I was watching Mike and Mike in the morning (on ESPN2 rediculously early) and they went off on their own shpiel about Madden. Problem is, they used the exact same verbiage as everyone else in the media that discusses it, especially Sportcenter from the night before, announcing its arrival in the same way, e.g., "Maddenoliday," "Its a Pop-Culture Phenomenon," etc., etc. Problem with THAT is that in the meantime on the commercial breaks, they were steadily cycling pretty heavily thru the Shaun Alexander commercial (which made me lol, admittedly).

Furthermore, check out the retardation on G4 (I know thats a LOT to ask, sorry). If theres football being played, reguardless of the season, its Madden. Well, thats obvious as to why NOW, but its always been the same. And ALL the players they (and any media outlet, for that matter) talk to about it all have the same speech about Madden - some guys even slip up and say they're not gamers and haven't played it, and then stumble back to how much of a thrill it is to see themselves in a game. Its pathetic, how transparent they are about being "coached" into what to say.

I've gotta say, the moneyhats for players don't apply only to EA/Madden, and its one of the reasons why I'll never let go of college football/basketball.

But thats the thing - its all about the scrilla, and EA has TONS to throw around. And while I couldn't say that EA pays for "Madden Widow" airtime, its not unforseeable with the kind of capitol they swing around behind this game in particular. Its really - REALLY - hard to tell whats manstream coverage, and whats purchased airtime, because there is definately a TON of it around.

I know that none of this has to do with the game itself, but it does have to do with the perception of it. If a homegrown NFL game has anything wrong with it, one could overlook it for its otherwise preferrable controls and quirks. But when a game is constantly thrown in my face, on sheer will of profit alone, it had DAMN well better be astonishingly good. Especially when they laid down enough money to kill any competition for the next - how many years was it? Was it 5 years, meaning 4 more to go?
So I don't really connect that its the public face of gaming, any more so than Tom Cruise being the public face of acting. His omnipresence is based solely on his history, which promises to unimaginative, big studio producers that he'll bring in the big bucks.

On a level of taste, in spite of the 2K series' short tenure, I've always heavily preferred it over Madden, which always felt "stiffer" and less forgiving in a kind of "Hey, I wasn't programmed to do THAT!" kind of way. In 2K, I could create some REAL havoc in being way out of position or calling hotroutes, and it was nice to be able to mix it up. But I digress.

In other words, its partly the face, that madden is madden that partly turns me off, but its the massive hemmoraging of the moolah that make them very unattractive to me. I AM however, eagerly waiting to see if they really can pull off Madden Wii. I don't have to like the company if the game is fun, but I've got a close, critical eye on it, and they've got an uphill climb to convince me to plop down 60 bucks on it.

In other news, is it obvious I've got nothing better to do with my time, or what?

Yah, summertime I always find myself sweating my ass off walking around in 100 degree heat, digging thru crappy second-hand stores and used outlets looking for something that doesn't suck. I know I'm not the only one because all those stores become really rank with all us sweaty geeks populating their interior.

Finger on the pulse, industry execs, finger on the pulse indeed.

Also, let me just note that summers around here are a damn good reason to stay indoors. A lot of people reguard the summer as recreation time, but not here in the south or at least around these parts, and I never hear anything about that. REEEEAAL heckuva time to have an industry dry spell.

Also again, let me just note that the DS is the messiah. Wii or not, thank you, Nintendo.

I know, its weird how its playing out. Its as if in playing hookey from the "big game," they are letting two big, bad schoolyard bullies to really get to know one another, knowing what will inevitably then ensue. Problem solved?

At first, nintendo was scaring me with their "Blue Ocean" nonsense speak. I'm actually unfortunately familiar with corporate jargon, and hearing that kind of corporate theory come from Nintendo was quite disheartening and put a solid knot in my stomache. But their master plan is starting to show itself, and it really is epic. Provided things play out as they're appearing to be, the NES will no longer be remembered as their big, bold accomplishment, which is fscking INSANE to think about!

/methinks this is perhaps something they've been hammering out for a long time, while Yamauchi was still in the big chair. I mean, surely this isn't all a plan by Satoru Iwata...

Right?

Actually, not to be arguing with anybody here, but I really do prefer two of the six necessary buttons to be on the shoulders. In arcades, the six button layout works great because your hand is hovering above the surface. And, honestly, unless you're going to hold your hand above the controller, even the four face buttons made certain combos difficult in, for instance, the SNES version of Killer Instinct. There were a lot of linkers I never used because they would progress from quick to medium, and I would always just end up mashing the two at the same time. I don't feel the N64's six did anything particuarly positive for this.

Holy crap. I remember this stuff.

Call it Sony's "Wee" Wii.

I've rarely experienced the feeling I felt while watching Sony's conference- I just slowly sunk in my chair in shame for them. It was like watching a Todd Solondz movie, even with the gut-wrenching "punchline," in Sony's case being to the tune of a half a grand.

MINIMUM.

I thought Microsoft really knew how to blow it, geez. I have a whole new respect for them. I mean, their theft of ideas is more sly and.. corperate. Sony just dropped trou in front of the world and we all got to see their shrivled and pathetic absence of any dignity and integrity. Ken Katagari even specifically introduced it as being born of their own innovation... and I'll bet he can fit two of those controllers in his mouth.

I just hope they have people ready for the phonecalls they'll get from Nintendo's lawyers. Whom are QUITE the lively bunch, from what I hear.

Oh, and I'll save you the suspense on one of their "secret" titles - Eight Days sucked. A few of us already played it a few years ago when it was called The Bouncer.
