TalkBack / RE: Castlevania Double Pack Announced
« on: December 09, 2005, 11:02:13 PM »
It's not so much that it doesn't exist, it's just that it's a side story that doesn't take place on the official timeline. At any rate, I thought CotM was much better than HoD, but HoD is still a decent enough 'Vania game. Good news for those who haven't played it and/or AoS.

Incidently, I have since learned how he "dodged" my blue shell. If you drop a bobomb behind you right before the blue shell hits, it won't hurt you. I'm guessing it's because dropping a bomb grants you temporary invincibility so if someone runs into your bomb right when you drop it, the resulting explosion won't hurt you too.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Question on Mario Kart scoring
« on: November 29, 2005, 04:01:37 PM »
Meh, more scoring weirdness. My record was something like 114-13 prior to my most recent match. During this match, one person dropped out after the second race, a second dropped out during the last race, and the third guy dropped out after he finished the last race, but before the results screen... even though we would have tied for first. I went to my records to see if it counted anything for me, and my record is now 116-10. It removed 3 losses from my record.

I think the Delfino shortcut is slightly faster than going the long way even without a mushroom as long as you have a very light character (Dry Bones, Toad, or Yoshi). The last shortcut on Sky Garden is ALWAYS faster than going the long way, regardless of whether you have a mushroom and/or are light weight.

Here's my question: Assuming you have a mushroom, which saves more time on Delfino - the docks shortcut or the alley shortcut? To me it seems like they're about the same. Given the difficulty of the docks shortcut, I would rather just take the alley.

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Top tier characters apparent already??

Bowser would be nice if not for the fact that character weight has no effect in online matches. That is to say, you can't bump characters that are lighter than you. Otherwise, Bowser could be a formidable opponent in the right hands, since he's tied for the highest speed and has the highest weight. Heavy weights just got royally screwed for online play since they get none of their benefits and all of their weaknesses.

Dry Bones is statistically the best for straight mini turbos/snaking because of his high acceleration and low drifting. Yoshi is probably second best, but he's also had a big boost in popularity since people on gamefaqs started finding out that Azen Zagenite uses him (he's one of the best online players). ROB and Luigi both benefit from high max speed and acceleration, making them ideal for tracks where it's difficult to snake. These four characters will definitely be the top tier. Get used to seeing them (or their karts, at least).

Basically, you use a light weight/high acceleration car (Dry Bomber is supposedly the best), and then starting from the middle of the track, start veering one way, and then power slide in the opposite direction. Then power slide back the other way. Back and forth. You have to be able to get the red sparks really quick after you start drifting or you'll hit the wall. Like Pale said, it's a hard move to pull off... it takes a lot of practice. I can only do it on really wide tracks like Figure-8 and Luigi Circuit, but I've seen people that seem to be able to do it constantly O_O

I enjoyed our races, there were quite a few close ones. Looking forward to racing you again sometime.

Was it just me, or did my blue shell actually miss you on Luigi Circuit? How on earth did you pull that one off? =P

I don't see it as imbalancing since everyone can do it. It just sucks because it makes heavy weights useless for online play.

Yes, that makes much more sense... thank you. I seriously felt like I was profiting from technical errors or something. Now I don't feel nearly as bad about my 41-5 record

I've noticed that my record seems a little off too. I'm currently 25-5, but I'm pretty sure I haven't played 30 matches yet... I would say 20 at most. I think the number of losses is correct, but my wins seem very inflated.

EDIT: Now I'm 28-5. I played one match since I was 25-5. Yeeeah...

Saying that the exclusion of voice chat was to keep the rating kid friendly is not likely. After all, you can create your own avatar which everyone will see. I'm expecting to see many a pixelated genitalia or swear word over my opponent's cars.

About the boss stages... (spoilers)

The two shown in the IGN videos were against the Big Bully from Mario 64 and the Stone Hands from the pyramid in the same game. Against the Bully you would pick up nothing but mushrooms and have to use them to try to bump the Bully off the stage... while he tried to do the same to you as well, of course. The Hands fought basically the same way they did in Mario 64, trying to crush you. You pick up shells and have to time really accurate shots to hit the eyes on their palms.

The Wario Stadium stage, while new, is rather similar to the N64 version. It does feature a part where you jump over the track, for those who enjoyed the tactic of royally screwing over your competition there.

And like darkheart said, everyone should definitely check out the videos on IGN. They basically show off every gameplay mode, including some of the missions. They already have all of the stages unlocked, so that will be a minor spoiler, but they don't have any of the secret characters unlocked. Personally, I think the Shine Runnner mode looks fun... very fast and frantic. It's definitely a step above the Shine Thief mode from DD.

Blizzard typically is not a console company. SC: Ghost was somewhat of a rarity in that regard. Historically, Blizzard has released more games for Nintendo consoles than for any of their competitor's consoles (Lost Vikings, Blackthorne, Rock n Roll Racing, StarCraft 64). And aside from SC: Ghost, the only other console game Blizzard is rumored to be working on is World of Warcraft, and there is no chance that would be released on Gamecube. But aside from that (again, a rumor) there haven't been any games announced for any consoles, so Nintendo isn't exactly alone.

No, but their online network still has a much larger user base than Nintendo's. The Blizzard employee's original comment about Nintendo having no online service, while false, is not that far from the truth. If the game's online components are a large part of the overall package, I think Blizzard didn't have much of a choice in this matter.

TalkBack / RE:Revolution Specs to Never be Revealed?
« on: November 02, 2005, 01:02:57 PM »
Ian, what you're basically saying is that Nintendo is damned if they do, and damned if they don't. If they release the specs as they did with the Gamecube, people will assume the system is less powerful than the competitors, but by not releasing them, they will assume the same thing. So, since you seem to know better than anyone else what the best marketing moves are for Nintendo, how do you think Nintendo should go about this? They're releasing a console that is (presumably) technically inferior to its competition, but capable of visuals that are comparable regardless and gameplay that promises to be unique. What is the perfect way for Nintendo to advertise this fact in Ian-Land without shooting themselves in the foot?

TalkBack / RE:Emotional Attachment in Gaming
« on: September 20, 2005, 11:08:09 PM »
I don't think any game has actually made me cry, but a few games have come close. The ending of FF10 was pretty sad, probably the most emotional game in the series to me. I grew much more attached to the characters than in previous entries. Zelda: Ocarina of Time's ending always brings me to the brink. I can't even explain why exactly... it's not that sad. But the moment where young Link goes to visit Zelda again after he's returned to the past, and then the action freezes when their gazes meet... it always touches me. The scene after the credits in Metroid: Zero Mission where you see the picture Samus drew of herself and the Chozo when she was a child fills me with a sort of sad nostalgia... hard to explain, again.
