Rocksteady NOT Making New TMNT Game
« on: February 11, 2012, 10:29:53 AM »

Bummer, dude.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/29233

The developers of the incredible Arkham series of Batman games have confirmed they are in fact not working on a game based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

It was rumored recently that the company, Rocksteady Studios, was working on an open-world exploration fighter, much like their recent Batman games, called TMNT Manhattan Crisis.
However, company chief Sefton Hill put these rumors to rest, telling Kotaku the rumor was amusing, but they're doing no such thing.

The Turtles continue to live on despite this fact, as a new iteration of the comic series is currently being published by IDW and a new CGI animated series is slated to launch this year on Nickelodeon.

This is really too bad, the turtles need a great game revival more than any other licensed franchise i can think of. I dont see Nickelodian putting something out there that wouldn't mass appeal to the target audience they have. That being said im totally excited for the new show and yes im nearly 30!

I really hope that this is in fact not true and they are working on a TMNT game.

All CGI? Nickelodeon? No thanks.

Now if Rocksteady isn't making the new game, can we assume that Bebop will instead? :P

Hey, the CG Ninja Turtles movie was pretty decent (even if the main story was rather underwhelming), and Nickelodeon's Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the best animated series ever created.  While the new series may very well suck, there's certainly precedence for it not sucking.

I kinda felt all along the whole rumor was just someone's idea of a joke, because Rocksteady was the name of one of the characters from the animated series. So it was just too much of a coincidence to seem real to me.

Add this to the Warren Spector Duck Tales game that built itself out in my imagination and will never see the light of day. I wished I'd never heard of either! It's like spraying water into the cattle cars.

I really hope that this is in fact not true and they are working on a TMNT game.

The developer coming out and saying the rumor is false pretty much puts it to rest.

Unless they were deliberately lying (unlikely, but possible).

Unless they were deliberately lying (unlikely, but possible).

I'm sure we could point to several examples where this has happened if we tried.

---------
OMG Nintendo is gonna release a Remodel of DS

Nintendo: We have no intention at this time to do any such thing...

*2 weeks later*

Nintendo: We have just redesigned the DS into a more Lite version. On sale NOW.
----------

Is Resident Evil 4 a Gamecube Exclusive?

Capcom: Yes. I will cut my head off if it comes to any other system....

*several weeks later*

Capcom: RE4 is coming to PS2 with bonus content!!!
-----------

So I'm sure them saying they are not doing it doesn't necessarily mean that they aren't, but it definitely means they don't don't want to talk about it if they are. So this is just one of those rumors you let sit on the shelf until Rocksteady does reveal what they are working on next before you can just completely throw it in the trash (and even then it still doesn't mean that they weren't working on it is some fashion or another).

With the DS, it was someone from Nintendo of Europe who said that. So it's highly likely that they didn't know that NCL was planning to announce a DS revision. And with RE4, IIRC Hikami was against the PS2 port and it was Capcom management who decided on it.

those were just exaggerated examples so that you get the point that they could be lying about what they are actually doing in order to not have to talk about it.

I think I am just used to companies coming up with more PR lines to deny rumors (like the popular "we do not comment on rumors and speculation").

Platinum games would be the next logcal choice to develope a good TMNT game. A TMNT game would demand a lot of action and Platinum is good at delivering games that push the bar on quality action. Although I am still holding out that Rocksteady might be developing this game still.

If they really are making it, one reason why they might lie is if their contract forbids them to talk about it or reveal anything. If someone asks them directly they would have to lie, because the only other option would be to ignore the question and that would only raise suspicions and all but confirm it to be true. So lying may have been their only option.

Then again, they probably really aren't working on it at all. That's my personal belief, but like I said anything is indeed possible.

I personally am happy about this.

I didn't like the description of what the rumored TMNT game would be.

We need someone to make a classic beat'em up in the tradition of the classic Ninja Turtle games, but emphasis the 4 player combat more with team combos, more complex fighting mechanic, and basically take that side scrolling fighting style and not make it 3D but keep it traditional, but with some modern game design decisions to make it better.

But, I still want it to be a game you can sit down and enjoy with friends.  I think about what Viewtiful Joe did to modernize the combat side scrolling platformer and I want that with beat'em ups.

For example:  I would love a lock on system so that you can rotate through enemies and select your target you want to focus on.  The lock on mechanic would allow you to throw things at the character better.  Allow you to build a fighting engine that once locked on gives you different moves, and combos and dodge moves.

Another idea would be to set combos not on the human character performing them, but on the enemy that is being attacked and stunned.  Then you could grab and throw them to another Turtle and have them link the attack and continue the combo...this would allow for team combos and more intricate combo system.

Items and weapons that are not just single move extensions but give you a new move set...perhaps the same move set that the enemy had before you took their weapon.  So now you can pick up new weapons and gain new fighting moves, and real time play with that mechanic.

All of this adds complexity and design to the game, but I want it to feel essentially like you are playing the Turtles in Time.
