GAME DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE HONORS NINTENDO WITH A GAME DEVELOPERS CHOICE AWARD

Feb. 21, 2008

The 2008 Game Developers Conference has honored Nintendo with a Game Developers Choice Award. The Legend of Zelda®: Phantom Hourglass for Nintendo DS™ won for Best Handheld Game of the Year. The game continues to enjoy strong momentum in the U.S., with more than 1.1 million copies sold since its Oct. 1, 2007, release.

Nintendo received nominations in three categories: Best Game of the Year (Super Mario Galaxy™), Best Handheld Game of the Year (The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass), and Best Game Design (Super Mario Galaxy). The awards were presented during an annual ceremony the night of Feb. 20, 2008, at the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco.  The awards are among the highest honors in game development, acknowledging excellence in game creation.

So am I to assume that Galaxy didn't win anything?  That's a shame.
Why must all things be so bright? Why can things not appear only in hues of brown! I am so serious about this! Dull colors are the future! The next generation! I will never accept a world with such bright colors! It is far too childish! I will rage against your cheery palette with my last breath!

Portal won game of the year, and it deserves it.  Here's the breakdown:

Quote
Best Game Design: Portal
Innovation Award: Portal
Best Debut: Crackdown
Best Audio: Bioshock
Best Downloadable Game: Flow
Best Technology: Crysis
Best Visual Arts: Bioshock
Best Handheld Game: Phantom Hourglass
Best Writing: Bioshock
Game of the Year: Portal

I don't know anything about crackdown, and all I know about flow is that it's pretty boring....but other than that I agree with these awards.  Bioshock was an incredible game in every way, save for the actual gameplay; these awards reflect that since it won three frilly fancy pants awards but not game of the year.

Plus Galaxy is overrated.

Yes, I could see Galaxy not winning these categories but being a solid nominee in many categories. But I'm upset to see Phantom Hourglass win an award instead.

I think I am okay with that KnowsNothing, I think that Portal really is something new, and if it really is that amazing it deserves it.  I love Galaxy though, and it deserves to be a nominee.

All I know about Portal is that it only comes in a box with four games I don't want.

If you install Steam, which the orange box will install anyway, you can get it off the steam network for 19.99. Totally worth it.

The Galaxy losses aren't too surprising but...

PHANTOM HOURGLASS! Hahaha! Sweet sweet Vindication!!! I love this game! Best Zelda I've played in ages!!! (*disclaimer, have not played previous handheld Zeldas)

Galaxy is just too uninspired to strike anyones fancy enough to give it an award. It's not a game you "experience" just one that looks good on paper, then you play it through and chuck in the bin.

I entirely disagree, I think it is the best Mario I have ever played.

I'd say it's more underrated, at least in terms of perception. Nobody would give SMG a GOTY award yet it has the highest average out there.

The truth is that 2007 was such a great year for games that it's easy to see ANY of those games out there being good candidates for winning, not just Galaxy, but the other ones as well.

It's fine. 2007 was great. 2008 will be better. Why complain?

Besides, PH won! YAY!
