Disney Epic Mickey 2: The Power of Two Impressions

My first experience with the Epic Mickey franchise was a generally pleasant one.

I never got around to purchasing the original Epic Mickey, despite my interest in the game's unique mechanic. So when I sat down with Epic Mickey 2 for the first time, I was throughly impressed. Both the controls and graphics worked well, and my experience with the game was pretty great.

I started out playing the tutorial level, in which I had to journey to Yen Sid’s world to get the magic paintbrush. From there I ventured around, learning how I could paint or thin the environment. There were many situations where I could either paint or thin and accomplish the same goal. Being new to this mechanic I found it fascinating, but for those revisiting the series, it's probably more of the same.

Eventually Oswald, the co-op character, was introduced. Oswald had a different ability set that, when combined with Mickey's, allowed the duo to complete goals. There was a particular 2D platforming level where Oswald threw Mickey up to a seesaw-like board so MIckey could then assist Oswald in progressing upward. I find that these types of cooperative puzzles are really fun to complete, especially when playing with someone you know.

After completing this level, we approached a boss battle. This section of the game was the one I didn’t find as enjoyable. I once again had the choice to either paint or thin the boss, however maneuvering around it was difficult. Some camera issues made it hard to land perfect jumps and direct paint in the right direction. As Mickey it was something I could get over, but with Oswald it appeared to be more of a problem.

I will defend that Epic Mickey 2 could be a great game, despite its minor issues. My ability to grasp its concept, as well as complete the demo, shows that everyone should be able pick up and play the game. Epic Mickey 2 is filled with choices, and left me with no choice but to be interested in this game when it launches later this year.

Great! I am excited about the game. But, I wish Nintendo would have announced a Wii U version. It's going to be hard for the Wii version to compete with the Graphically superior (I'm not a graphics whore, but they 360/PS3 version sure is pretty - and we can all tell those screenshots aren't going to look like that on Wii).


Besides the game may have been interesting with the Wii U controller pad. a paintbrush, and a touch screen... lots of potential there. Makes me want another release of Okami that plays on the Wii U controller just thinking about it.

I JUST beat EM1 for the first time.  As everyone else in the world has said, it was great but severely flawed.

It's sad to here that there are still some camera issues in the 2nd game.  But, I really think EM2 will be an upgrade on an already enjoyable experience.

We've had two positive Epic Mickey impressions. I might be setting ablaze to our positive Epic Mickey 2 coverage. I played as Oswald and 1) Oswald is boring and 2) the camera still sucks. :(
