TalkBack / Re: This Week in Awful Downloads
« on: September 13, 2010, 11:57:53 PM »
Nintendo hates demos for one simple reason: they didn't come up with the concept first.  Name ANYTHING that someone else did first that Nintendo does well.
Backwards compatibility. Microsoft's sucked from the start on the 360, but they were there first, while Sony first gimped the PS3's then removed it entirely, but the Wii plays GameCube games perfectly (excepting those with special hardware - the modem, the LAN adaptor, and the GameBoy Player).

Question - Why does Club Nintendo list the Metroid Prime Trilogy under the "Intend to Buy" with "No. of Players: To be Determined"
Question: Why didn't/doesn't Club Nintendo list the Trilogy under "Intend to Buy" for me?

I wonder what brought on this sudden wave of cashing in on nostalgia?
Quite possibly they're trying to distract us from the fact that their only announced project after the forthcoming Clone Wars games is The Old Republic. They just don't have anything else in the pipeline that's going to give them money soon.

You know, I never understood why Nintendo made these incredible game engines for their Mario games and only used them once in a generation.
I don't know about Sunshine, but the Super Mario 64 engine served as the basis for the Ocarina of Time engine.

More powerups? *sigh* When NSMB was first announced, I was hoping for something closer to classical SMB gameplay than we got. And this is going to deviate further?

*sigh* Who am I kidding? I'll buy it anyways. But I'll hate every minute of it! ;)

Preorder now on Amazon (Or gamestop) to get a 49.90 price point.
That assumes that all copies are bundled, and that they don't do both bundled and unbundled like EA is doing.

meh. if your so paranoid you can copy it to SD card, than copy that to computer hard drive, than you can burn that on a CD. So you can have your precious physical media version of it.
Which can only be copied back to the same Wii it came from (without using homebrew--at least, last I checked they didn't have a computer-side encryption, just decryption). Hardly a salve, when "real" physical copies can be played on any system.

(Seriously, is authentication by account like iTunes or Xbox Live too much to ask for?)

A "Wii exchange" sounds more like someone sending their console in for repair and getting a different one back than someone trying to sell their Wii Speak.

Bond games have attempted to match the success of that N64 knockout ever since, but to no avail.
Are my friends and I the only ones who liked TWINE? The single-player was improved, actually using in-game dialog to advance the story, while the multiplayer was just as much fun as GoldenEye while offering what seemed like a greater variety of maps (in terms of styles, not actual number).

TalkBack / Re: Firmware is the New Hardware
« on: November 25, 2008, 07:55:11 AM »
Who knows?  Maybe Nintendo can unlock DVD player functionality for all with the proper firmware update, as long as the console is technically capable of doing it in the first place.
The *ahem* unofficial developers' community has already done so; there's no reason Nintendo technically couldn't.

No one cares about Sam & Max, huh?  I was expecting at least a bit of vitriol from this game's supposedly rabid fans.
I care about Hit the Road. I played... whichever episode of S1 they had for free on Steam. I think Episode 4. That made me decide not to buy the Telltale games, a decision only reinforced by this review.

Now which is the real ripoff, a stupidly simple Atari-era arcade game for 800 points or Get Even's DLC?
As long as each Get Even DLC pack has a similar amount of content compared to the original download, definitely the former.

Wii can have track packs, Nintendo's Policy is not to have the same content twice on their servers meaning no track packs and no singles if they both contain the same thing in them.
That can't be true, as My Life as a King has some content (like the race unlocks) available both independently and in a bundle.

However, a quick Google search will bring up other users with similar problems. Some recommend a graphical "soft boot" with the Wii Remote & Nunchuk, but that does me no good.

Are you talking about forcing it to output at 480i? (If so, I don't want to know how you created the misappellation of "graphical 'soft boot'". :P) Have you tried calling the number listed to see what Nintendo says?

You're lucky you didn't actually put up money on your guess, Brandogg, it was just some minor changes in the Shop Channel.
That actually doesn't rule out Brandogg's guess, then, unless you have information on the intimate details of how games like FFCC interact with the Shop for purchasing their DLC. ;)

TalkBack / Re: Nintendo Points are Not Interchangeable
« on: October 10, 2008, 07:49:25 AM »
I don't understand why 'Wii points' have been renamed. Putting points on the Wii means they are locked out from use on the DSi. Having a single name for the points implies the opposite. What would have been wrong with 'DSi points' and 'Wii points'?
As I understand it, the main reason behind the change is that they're going to have one SKU for retail cards that works with both systems, instead of two.

The only news in this non-unnews piece was that there is a brand spanking new Pikmin coming.
No, we knew that. The real news was that we'd get credit towards Club Nintendo from old registrations. :)

You can't steal VC channels anymore. You used to be able to do it because they only checked to see if you had a valid ticket (which can be created/hacked) for the VC channel (and WiiWare), and if you did, you could redownload the title for free. Now Nintendo checks your accounts purchase history, so if you didn't buy it, you can't download it from the shop.
That's not the only way, that was just the easiest.

I'd rather just have them on VC personally.
I would be very surprised if they still had the source files necessary to produce translated versions of the early games. And more surprised if they'd make enough money to justify the translation and development costs.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: "Wii HD" in 2011?
« on: October 05, 2008, 10:07:44 PM »
It's a significant technical update. I love special features.

But it's a minor visual update.
That very much depends on your screen size; on a 12" model, yes, it'll be minor. On 20", it's usually pretty noticeable.

Nintendo Gaming / Re: "Wii HD" in 2011?

That's definitely from the conversion process, because NTSC, if anything, is better than PAL.
NTSC is lower resolution and has no ability to accurately reproduce color. About the only leg up it could possibly have on PAL is that they can do a reversible film -> NTSC conversion. (I hesitate to call it a good conversion, though.)

Anyway, when it comes to HD, there is no PAL or NTSC anymore (not in the way that there is with SDTV), just different region codes when it comes to BluRay and video games, basically. I'm pretty sure all PAL TVs do 60hz now.
But not all NTSC TVs or players do 50hz, and some HD content--mainly British shows--is produced at 1080/25p or 1080/50i. I know that Torchwood's Blu-Ray release--even in the UK--was a 1080/60i conversion, but I'm wondering if that's truly going to be the standard or if we're going to possibly see some incompatible releases down the line.

I bought a combo VHS/DVD player for my dorm. I recently watched Kiki's delivery service on it. I will get Kiki on DVD eventually, but I was perfectly happy with the VHS copy.

Maybe I am a luddite. *shrug*
Not a luddite, just blind. ;)

Nintendo Gaming / Re: Nintendo's Storage Solution
« on: October 04, 2008, 05:37:20 PM »
Well I think they can do this since the Wii has 88MB Ram and the max size so far is 40MB how about loading it into RAM?
That wouldn't work with anything using more than 48MB of RAM. VC titles should be fine, but WiiWare titles might not be (especially if their content is compressed in storage but decompressed on run, or is procedurally generated).

Besides, I don't think you'd see a significant speed savings skipping the RAM->Flash step of the process...

To make it so that software stored on SD memory card can be played on Wii console by going through much simpler procedures.

To me, that sounds like you can't play them directly off the SD card, but they may be doing something like the Guitar Hero method.
Without knowing what the Guitar Hero method is...

We will also make it so that you will need to go through just one process in order to transfer Virtual Console or WiiWare software stored on an SD card to the Wii console and then be able to play it.

That sounds to me like they're planning on just-in-time copying; the channel may be stored on the SD card, but choosing it from the Wii menu will copy it memory and start it without fussing around with the Memory stuff in the settings. In other words, Spak-Spang's second solution suggested above.
