Pikmin 3 Out in August, New Pikmin Species Shown
« on: April 17, 2013, 11:07:20 AM »

The game's worst kept secret is now out in the open.

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/33889

Pikmin 3 will be released on August 4 in North America and August 11 in Japan, as announced in the latest Nintendo Direct presentation.

Dates were not confirmed for Europe or Australia, although it was stated that it would be released in those regions within the next few months.

In addition, a brand new species of Pikmin, referred to as the "Winged Pikmin, has also been officially unveiled.

This new breed, which has been teased several times in earlier trailers, is pink and, as its name suggests, has wings that enable it to hover several feet above the ground. New gameplay footage shows a group of Winged Pikmin carrying items over large obstacles and attacking a flying enemy with great ease.

Yay a date!

Plus I had figured way back when that the new pink Pikmin would be able to fly. Really looking forward to this.

August 4, just a hair outside of the "launch window". Well done, Nintendo *sarcastic clapping*.

Not sure I really care about this game, TBH. It all just looks like "more Pikmin". Does not (yet) seem to be doing much that is new or fresh with the concept.

Seriously... That is so far off shooting the mark that its not even funny.  I can understand Wonderful 101 but we know for a fact that Pikmin 3 has been in development since BEFORE the WiiU even was seriously.

Unless their is a REALLY strong demo at E3 Nintendo may have delayed this game into irrelevancy in the larger market.

Looking in August I see it truly going against Mario and Luigi: Dream Team and Disney Infinity.  Those are the games I think would have the most cross-over with Pikmin 3.  I also believe that Dream Team will probably beat it.

If this game turns out to be merely Pikmin 3 I'm going to be left with a lot of questions as to what took them so damn long. When I say 'merely Pikmin 3' what I mean is a game which is basically an incremental upgrade from Pikmin 2. It does have four players now I guess, but I really don't think that accounts for the long development cycle. It's actually rather baffling.

Much like Skyward Sword, it is unlikely that the Pikmin 3 which is ultimately released will have actually been in development for that long. There is likely to have been at least one project restart, particularly when the game was moved to Wii U.

The delay may entirely be because their time estimate to do this work wasn't realistic due to Nintendo's inexperience with HD graphics.  I certainly don't expect them to have asked anyone outside of Nintendo who has worked with HD games for six years now.

I would prefer this game not just be "more Pikmin" but there are only 2 Pikmin games so we're kind of starved for anything like this period.  It's a series that is new enough that it could make do with a more generic sequel, but I would still be disappointed.
