Everybody buy each other a copy of Power Up. That's the only fair solution.

Two things:

1) I asked this question in the NOM UK interview.

2) I'd like to point out that this wasn't in response to complaints - the alternate control method was already in there before E3.

I generally agree except on two points:

1) Screw Eidos, Acclaim, and Midway anyway
2) Not sure they really need to support online at this time. Psychological effects? Interesting theory, but who knows, really.

TalkBack / RE: Iwata Comments on Nintendo Next Generation
« on: January 12, 2004, 09:12:35 AM »
EGM this month said that while they hear rumors of Nintendo doing an all-in-one system, it is seperate from the new system they're going to announce at E3.

It's more cost-effective to release a GCN disc with the games on it if you're only trying to sell it to GCN owners. If you're trying for a larger or different market - like the same people who bought the Atari and Namco machines that Jakks Pacific put out - they can fit a dozen NES games into a machine the size of an NES control pad for $25 easily.

If Doug E. Fresh says they're unconstitutional, I believe him. The man's got a good head on his shoulders. He's the kind of guy we need on our side.

If I were any more excited about this title, I would have an acute MI and Dr. Carter would have to shock me at 300.

That is all. This game is going to rock so hard.

Nintendo Gaming / Super Mario Advance 4
« on: July 12, 2003, 09:32:04 AM »
I like the e-Reader as a piracy deterrent. Those of us who buy, not download, our games get the full benefit. (Uh, until somebody releases a complete save state, I guess...)

I played through all of Mario Advance 4 yesterday and today, and posted complete thoughts on my home page (link in sig). Only two cards are available so far but it looks like there are going to be quite a few cards released (one for every item, about thirty extra levels, and a bunch more that are gameplay strategy movies).

I was thinking about this today too.

Some things to consider:

-Super Mario Bros. Deluxe was never released on cart in Japan; it was only available through the Lawson convenience store download system, which is now over. So the All-Stars versions of 1 and 2 could be an option. But remember that the SMA games have all been rather expansive since Mario Advance - Mario 3 was given a complete overhaul. As fun as they are, Mario Advance 5 featuring SMB 1 and 2 would not be an impressive followup unless there was some dramatic change to the games.

-With the spate of SNES rereleases, and the success of Mother 1&2 and the Mario Advance remakes, I'd be shocked if Mario RPG didn't hit the GBA within a year or so. I doubt it would be tagged with the Mario Advance title though.

-Yoshi's Story sounds like it could happen too. They've probably got a working GBA version sitting around already and are just wondering how to position it as a commercial success.

-Super Mario Land and SML2 would require top-to-bottom upgrades, and let's not forget that they are very limited games. This would defeat the purpose of the Mario Advance series if they had to be entirely reprogrammed and redrawn. A brand-new game, as well, would defeat the purpose.

I'd look to the SNES back catalog if you really want to know what's going to happen GBA-wise. There's two more DKC games. There's two Fire Emblem games. There's Metal Slader Glory Director's Cut. There's Marvelous, an RPG directed by Eiji Aonuma. Kirby Super Star.  Star Fox. Hell, there's even Super Punch-Out! if you want to get crazy. I'd put money down and say that at least half of these games will end up on the GBA. Sadly, Nintendo's kind of running out of Mario titles. And I say that without a speck of sarcasm; I was completely addicted to Advance 4 these last two days.

Nintendo Gaming / Prime or somethign else?
« on: February 10, 2003, 08:54:00 PM »
See, I don't imagine they'd make such a radical change as going RPG. People are expecting Metroid, which is what the game needs to feel like. The addition of leveling up, however, would bring the game closer to Symphony of the Night - whether that would be looked upon as poetic justice or pandering by Retro is still a mystery.

Samus needs to keep her old weapons, that much should be clear. They need to find new ideas. The game will almost definitely be in first-person mode and use large chunks of (if not the entire) original Prime engine - after all, they're readying this for 2004. That's a tight schedule.

I agree.

Metroid Prime was a fantastic remake of Metroid. The new elements that were added were quite fun, but ultimately the goal was less to add new things and more to make the old stuff all work flawlessly in 3D. It was an unqualified success.

But Metroid Prime 2 can't be the same thing over again.

"Samus Aran responding to distress call. Oh no, I dropped every single one of my weapons again like a stupid moron."

Metroid Prime 2 needs to be something entirely new. Look at the innovations with Fusion - storylines, pensive Samus sequences, and a world that unfolded less through exploration and more through a linear progression.

That's what's needed for MP2. Beyond that, isn't Samus Aran a bounty hunter? Shouldn't we see her, you know: hunting some bounty? And is the only use of that incredibly cool ship really going to be land on the planet, then take off at the last second before the whole thing explodes? Why not fly that sucker from planet to planet, taking jobs and bringing in criminals? And have a plot unfold as that happens, finally leading back to, well, Metroids?

That's how Retro needs to approach the project.

That's $400,000,000 right there.  And I'm sure FFX and Kingdom Hearts did not cost 320 million to make, distribute, and promote

Nnnnnnnnnnnnno.

Publishers profit a few dollars off of every game - not $50.

This is also ignoring that other money pit, FFXI.

FFX and Kingdom Hearts made Square eighty million dollars?

I just read the Famitsu interview, and the part about FFXII isn't in there. In fact, there's no "reporter" part, as the interview is set up as a conversation between Miyamoto and Matsuno. Matsuno did say he would like to do something with the Card-E Reader. But he might have just been being polite to Miyamoto.
