Want a new GameCube for under $70?
« on: March 14, 2003, 12:40:59 PM »
If you're still on the fence about GameCube, you just ran out of excuses ... Update: Too slow, they're gone!

Update:Told you that you needed to move fast.  They're sold out now!

FAO Schwarz is going out of business, and they're clearing out stock, and they have Indigo GameCubes for $66.98.

It's unknown how long this amazing deal will last, but I'd highly suggest that if you don't have a GameCube, or are looking to replace a broken one, you're not going to get a much better deal than this.

Note: The site is getting hammered with deal-seeking traffic, so be patient and let the link load fully.

Thanks to TechBargains.com for the tip!

Wow they already sold out.  I checked the site a few minutes ago not to get a cheap Cube but to see if they were selling Xboxes or PS2s at a low price too.  Unfortunately they don't appear to be.  In fact they don't seem to even have any PS2 product at all.  Must have sold them out first.  If anybody notices they drop the Xbox price post it here.

How exactly does FAO Schawrz go out of business- that's what really surprised me about the article. I thought they were a really popular toy store. I mean, the movie Big had it's greatest scene there!

Cheap games because of closings are great, though, especially since a bunch of K-Marts are closing. One near me closed up recently and there was at least 25% off all games. Unfortunatly, by the time I checked it out all the good stuff was gone.

Umm, I don't want to contradict Rick here but according to a recent GamerFeed article, FAO is simply phasing out the indigo units, not going out of business. As always, this is open to speculation but since none of the other GC items have gone on sale this would seem much more logical.

That's weird; it's only the indigo that's discounted. The other colors are $160. That's why they're going out of business (it's true, the b&m stores are going too)--cuz they're stuff is always overpriced.

Edisim: Look at what ScaredAndAfrain said- in the link he provided, it says that FAO Schwarz is NOT going out of business, they're just phasing out their indigo Gamecubes. That's why only the Indigo Cubes are discounted- not any other Nintendo or videogame related products.

FAO Schwarz has closed nearly ALL of it's stores, and has filed for bankruptcy.  They're auctioning off the leases for their stores.  I can tell you for absolute fact that every FAO store in Washington State has been closed down.  The Bellevue store cleared out so fast it was spooky.

Come on guys ... you should know that I do my homework by now.    While they might be keeping the web storefront open for the time being, it's very likely a front for the liquidators.

Well that sucks. FAO Schwarz was like the symbol for American toys for so long. It's kinda hard to believe they going out of business.

Hey everyone,

Noticed this thread and I thought I should stand up for the little guy.  ;-)  GamerFeed did contact FAO Schwartz - New York City for a comment and they had mentioned that:

#1) FAO Schwartz New York was not closing down.

#2) The price cut was made to clear out Indigo GameCubes from inventory.

The misunderstanding may have come from looking at only the flagship store, which would be a problem.  Anyway, just wanted you guys to know that we did do our research and I personally contacted the FAO Schwartz store, and the story should reflect the fact it was their largest store.  Thanks for the concern.

No sweat, John.  Sorry about the assumption, but as I'm sure you know, most sites out there wouldn't have even bothered calling a store.    My guess is that the person you talked to was either instructed to deny the closures, or was simply clueless.  Anyway, consider my comments retracted.

The FAO Schwarz closures have been pretty big news here in Seattle over the last month.  My guess is that they're keeping New York open out of nostalgia, after all, it is their flagship store, and the one featured in "Big".  Still, I'm not expecting even that to stay open too much longer.  We're in a recession, and FAO's policy of selling everything marked up even over retail just doesn't fly today.  Consumers aren't as stupid as they used to be.  I'm going to miss it, because nothing made you feel like a kid again than walking into an FAO Schwarz.  Well, that, and maybe DisneyWorld.
