My guess is that the person you talked to was either instructed to deny the closures, or was simply clueless. Anyway, consider my comments retracted.
The FAO Schwarz closures have been pretty big news here in Seattle over the last month. My guess is that they're keeping New York open out of nostalgia, after all, it is their flagship store, and the one featured in "Big". Still, I'm not expecting even that to stay open too much longer. We're in a recession, and FAO's policy of selling everything marked up even over retail just doesn't fly today. Consumers aren't as stupid as they used to be. I'm going to miss it, because nothing made you feel like a kid again than walking into an FAO Schwarz. Well, that, and maybe DisneyWorld.
