Sonic Colors Aims to Have 2D Sonic Quality
« on: September 14, 2010, 01:17:39 PM »

The latest Sonic title hopes to go back to its roots, according to the development team.

Sonic Colors Producer Takashi Iisuka affirmed that Sonic Colors for the Wii and DS aims to take the franchise back to its simpler, fun roots seen in the classic 2D titles and that the development team has found the issues that have plagued the recent 3D titles.

He mentions that “the reason why is because the 3D titles don't reach the level of quality the fans expect. The development of Sonic Colors has been guided by the pros and cons of the previous 3D titles.”

Iizuka also reveals that one of the inspirations behind Sonic Colors is the Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games series, mainly it's “pick up and play” ideals. “I had the feeling that the franchise had begun to take itself too seriously and the story too profound,” he said. “While I have always seen Sonic as a fun, enjoyable and laid back series. This is why we believe that Sonic Colors is just as good as the classic 2D titles.”

Sonic Colors will be released this November.

The 2-D Sonic games are a nice blend of speed AND platforming; a lot of the recent console titles have just been about blazing speed. If they can keep the former in mind, then this will be quite promising. My favorite title from recent history is Unleashed, and I think it pulled it off quite well even if the Werehog levels were not as desired nor executed as well as they could have been.
This is where I would write something witty or funny if I had any ideas.

You know, dare I say it, this is actually looking rather good. I'm completely ready to revoke that statement if need be, but Sonic Colours, unlike recent Sonic titles, has a strong concept. Doing it well is another thing altogether -- can Sega do it right this time? I really hope so.

I actually believe their statement this time! Unlike those other times when I actually believed it!

But I played the game for a while, it wasn't a buggy mess, momentum carried on from jumping and there was actually platforming and a bit of exploration at certain points.

Like Star Fox, Sonic is at that point where the reputation is so tarnished in my mind that it has to meet higher expectations to get me to pay attention to it than other franchises.  The devs can say whatever they want and I remain skeptical.  Sonic doesn't need a good game to get my attention it needs a GREAT game.  It needs the sort of game that gets GOTY type praise and unanimous 90%+ reviews.  Just being decent or okay is not good enough to win me back as I will naturally assume that diehard fans are overrating it out of a desire to see the franchise be good again.

Plus once something has ruined its reputation with me I become much more critical of it.  Don't know why exactly, I just seem to work that way.  I notice the flaws more so again the comeback has to be huge.  I have to think that things have completely turned around and not just experienced a fluke improvement.
