TalkBack / RE: Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance GBA Impressions
« on: December 27, 2003, 06:14:07 AM »
Wow, this sounds cool.  I've played BG on the Cube, and found it to be one of the best two-player games in a long time.  I'm looking forward to the GBA version, but only if the multiplayer support is good.

Nintendo Gaming / Golden Sun for Gamecube

I forget exactly what it was that bothered me about the battle system, but I think it was something like the way it managed the order of your party members' ability to attack.  It just wasn't right.  I liked the game, and got pretty far, but the battle system was so infuriating that I just couldn't stand to play it anymore.

Nintendo Gaming / Golden Sun for Gamecube

Golden Sun was pretty good, but I finally sold it to a local game store because I couldn't stand using their battle system.  Seriously, I just couldn't take it, and it was bad enough that I had to get rid of the game.  Other than that, I really enjoyed it and passed many hours at school thanks to it.

General Gaming / Sony announces... the PSX!?
« on: May 29, 2003, 06:34:35 AM »
An ounce of prevention...

Here's how I see it, and consequently, how I think Sony is playing this whole deal.  First, you have to dig back to the roots of the Xbox, which lie in WebTV.  Some of the execs at Microsoft didn't want a gaming machine as much as they wanted a game-enabled WebTV.  They wanted to make a super-duper WebTV which could record shows like Tivo, play games like the PlayStation, and surf the internet like...well...like WebTV.  Eventually that idea fell by the wayside, probably due to the final cost of the machine being too far out of reach and too much R&D time to develop the thing.  Remember, Microsoft uses a lot standard PC hardware in the Xbox, not custom stuff like Nintendo and Sony.

So what does this have to do with Sony and the PSX?  Sony knows that the next Xbox will have the aforementioned Tivo-like features.  Sony is also not ready to announce anything in the way of a new console other than they are working on it and it will use lots and lots of processors to do various jobs and will be a thousand times more powerful than the PS2.  But if they announce this system, it will take a lot of steam away from Microsoft when they announce specs for the Xbox 2.  It will come with these features like recording TV and possibly disc burning, but Sony will already have that machine, so why care?  It's sort of like their announcement of the PSP, except this time they actually have something more than a sheet of paper with some proposed specs on it.

TalkBack / 3DO Files for Bankruptcy

I dunno...I'm gonna miss Trip Hawkins and his weird little company.  I remember going into Best Buy several years ago to see cutting-edge 3-D graphics on a 3D0 machine.  They had this game where you flew a helicopter around and blew stuff up.  They had ideas for their system that were way ahead of its time and, unfortunately, way off mark when it came to a real consumer machine.  It was too expensive, its purpose was ambiguous, and it was more confusing than it was cool.  It's too bad that the company has put out such crappy games for so long...and it's good that they're finally being put out of their own misery.

Hmmm...now there's one for the books.  No, I haven't beaten it without the Varia suit.  Is it possible?  Tell ya what...I'll accept your challenge, if you accept mine!

My record for a Metroid game is on Super Metroid.  I beat it without ever getting the high-jump boots.  :-)
