Unless I'm mistaken, Spak-Spang thought that Amiibos would all be the same/interchangeable, with the figure being just eye candy. Amiibos then would essentially just be a generalized storage unit, like a spiffy wireless flash drive.

Spak-Spang, this is not the case. They were always intended to be character specific. A Mario amiibo is a Mario amiibo, and it is such in any game that has Mario and supports amiibos. Same thing for any other character. They're digital characters held within a figurine. How they interact with a game will differ per game, though.

I believe the word Neal is looking for is charming. It's the same reason that I love things like Skies of Arcadia and The Princess Pride: they have an undeniable charm to them that makes them great.
