Nintendo Gaming / RE: Revolution booklet tidbits
« on: February 08, 2006, 03:48:31 PM »
That picture of the zen garden looks like a small model of Japan in the center surrounded by a revolution (the swirls).  Also, there is the picture of the Animal Crossing characters and in it, all the characters are wearing the same shirt with the same swirl/revolution.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Revolution launches in November
« on: January 19, 2006, 10:54:25 AM »
Ran into this over at the Gamespot forums. Its not really news and ,naturally, it should be taken with a grain of salt since it really can't be proven.

Quote

A poster on IGN's Insider forums, who works for Ubisoft and has a special VIP account given to him by IGN, had the following to say:

"I'd love to talk 'in-depth' about next-gen systems too, more specifically PS3 and Revolution but, as you can imagine, we're under embargo to release any details about those systems. Also, I don't want to speak on behalf of Ubisoft as to which system is going to win until they've all launched. Last thing I need is a NOA/SCEA/MS representative calling Ubisoft saying that I was bad talking their system. All I can say is - I think 'someone' is back in the race."

I don't know exactly what to make of it. I'm not a member of IGN Insider so I don't know how difficult it is to obtain or what prestige does having a VIP account have. I don't know if by IGN giving this person a VIP account does it give him some shred of credibility.

If anyone is a member of IGN Insider, I'd like to ask if you can find out, by PMing Matt or whichever other means you find necessary, and finding out if in fact this person does work for Ubisoft. Anyway, the member's sn is "PRINCE_NineOne1"

As for the info posted by said member all I can say is that I can't wait for E3. Nintendo ,with its cloak of secrecy, has brought new life into the video game industry. Year in and year out I was taking what was given to me and was content with just that. Now, after spending some time with the DS and reading about what Nintendo has planned for the Rev, I've come to realise how redundent and generic the video game cycles have become. I do still find enjoyment in today's game and I'm not a radical who says today's games should be scrapped in favor of Nintendo's vision but I'm more excited about what Nintendo is offering me with the Rev than what I've already experienced with my 360 and what Sony will offer me sometime this or next yr.

Nintendo Gaming / GPU "Hollywood" Specs revealed??
« on: December 07, 2005, 07:20:21 PM »
I'm not sure if this has been posted in the "2-3 times more powerfull etc...." thread but I couldn't find it when I flipped through it.  Anyways, I've ran into what I believe to be a rumor or leak, aint sure, of the Rev's GPU "Hollywood". I ran into this at the Gamespot forums which was taken from Revogaming.net. Anyway, here's the info.

Quote

One of the two sources who gave us information on IBM's "Broadway" processor today gave us information on the "Hollywood" GPU from ATi. Details inside.

The source provided the following information under conditions of anonymity, as well as some other general Revolution statements:

- "Hollywood" is based on ATi's RV530 GPU
- The GPU has been optimised significantly (more on that below)
- The graphics are not as bad as IGN might make them sound
- The Revolution's RAM, whilst being around 128MB, is highly optimised

Here are the specs for the RV530, thanks to Anandtech:

RV530

600MHz Core Clock
1400MHz Memory Clock
512MB Maximum Memory for "XT"
256MB Maximum Memory for "Pro"
128-bit Memory
12 Pipelines
Maximum 16x32MB 1.4ns GDDR3

High Optimisation

The source described the Revolution's optimisation like this:

Although he acknowledged that Revolution will not be as powerful as 360 or PS3, he said that the optimisation level of Revolution is similar to that of the GameCube: although it did not have the highest hardware specification, it managed to churn out the best graphics in titles such as Resident Evil 4.

RAM

The RAM is 1T-SRAM, as previously reported. The source mentioned some optimisation of the RAM but did not clarify.

We remind you that this source is very trustworthy: the information that we broke exclusively on IBM's "Broadway" is now mirrored in the comments of various developers to IGN.

There is no official word from Nintendo, however. Take this as you will.

RevoGaming will keep you updated.

LINK

Well I don't know much about specs so I'll leave the more tech savvy members break that apart and fill me in on weather or not this is possible and if its solid specs to begin with.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:Your Revolution game ideas HERE!
« on: October 12, 2005, 12:55:10 PM »
My ideas are basically for already established franchises.  Anyways here they are

Fight Night developed by EA

I was just reading over at the gamespot forums and there was a topic on general game ideas for the Rev controller and one really caught me by suprise. I'm not sure if the idea has been posted on here but Fight Night or any boxing game could really benefit from the use of 2 Rev remotes.

Imagine each remote taking the place of a fist. As long as the physics are done right and the remote can manage to capture and replicate on the fly your hands movements then the game could work. Crazy thing is that you'll only need the use of 1 button, 2 at the most. Lets say for example you can hit the A button and hold your hands to your chest and it'll alow you to block. You can then bob and weave while blocking and the motion of the controller will show your body movements on screen. Then let go of A and start swinging. The direction pad can then be used for you to move around the ring. Just simply point in the direction you want the fighter to move.

With this setup, I think what'll cuase the most dificulties is the physics of the arms and the hit detection. I think that it can be pulled off though.

Bushido Blade developed by Squareenix

This game could basically have the same controls as fight night except you'll just need the use of one Rev remote.  For those that don't know, Bushido Blade was a one on one fighting game for the original playstation developed by Squaresoft.  The battles were one on one samurai duels.  There was no life bar and you can take out an apponent with one well timed blow.  You could also disable them by slashing their arms and legs.

Some people have already described button setups for sword fighting games so I wont get into those details here (even the Fight Night setup can work for this) but can you just imagine first person duels.  Just picture you facing down your apponent, sun setting in the background, a few strands of your virtual hair flowing in your face onscreen as a result of the wind.  The setting would be in a forest of bamboo trees.   All of a sudden your foe attacks, you dart back and you both start running through the forest, swiping at each other cutting down the bamboo bark as you go.  Anyways, I think you get the picture.

Elder's Scroll 4 (I think its up to 4, forgot who's developing it too)

This game would be perfect on the Rev since first person sword fighting has always been garbage in my book when using today's current setup.  I loved the Elder's Scroll on Xbox but could never get past how annoying the battles were.  Trying to swipe at a mouse on the floor or a bat fluttering in the air with your sword and one lone swipe animation (maybe 2) sucks major ass.  The Rev controller should be able to fix this.

On a side note, I was thinking of a first person shooter add on for the Rev remote.  I'm sure its been brought up before though.  I can see a actual light gun with a slot in the front where the remote could be placed.  Also, an analog stick would be on the top rear of the gun right within reach of the trigger hand's thumb.

« on: September 23, 2005, 09:55:01 PM »
I thought the idea of non unique sns was for the DS's wifi.  I know the DS's wifi is supposed to resemble what the Rev's wifi might be like but since not much info has been given about Rev's wifi service, I wouldn't completely jump the gun and say it won't have unique names.  I guess we'll find more out in October when Nintendo sheds some more light on their wifi service.

Nintendo Gaming / Rev Rumors and Speculations
« on: September 19, 2005, 10:42:46 PM »
I decided to start this thread since trying to figure out where to post any Rev rumor I run across in these threads is way too difficult.  There seems to be too many threads talking about similar things that could all be included in one big thread.  All in all, I hope everyone posts all their Rev rumors here to keep things in somewhat of an order and make it easier for all of us to foillow.

Anyways, I've ran into 2 "leaked" Rev specs and I thought I post them here.  First, Han Solo (for those that don't know, he's supposed to be a Factor 5 emp that frequents the G4 forums) has posted revised Rev specs.  They are as follow.

Quote

Nintendo has modified the System 1 specs. They have deleted the System 2 specs as it is obviously expensive and really powerful.

System 1 Modified
CPU:
1 IBM Custom PowerPC 2.5 GHz with 256 KB L1 cache and 1 MB of L2 cache (an L3 cache is rumored). It’s Dual Threaded

13 billion dot product operations per second

Revolution GPU

ATI Custom based RN520 core. The "N" stands for Nintendo, and is because the ArtX team is with them, that is why it’s an "N".

GPU core at 600 MHz. Will support up to 2048x1268 resolution, HD support is still being decided. Will have 256 MB’s of 1T-SRAM (the RAM is much better due to some tweaking, compared to GC’s RAM. The latency and Cells are much more efficient and faster. Around 1.2 ns is the latency, on average).

32 parallel floating-point dynamically scheduled shader pipelines.

Polygon Performance: 500 million triangles per second theoretical, average in game would be around <100 Million/sec>

Shader Performance: ~50 billion shader operations per second

Revolution memory

512 MB of 700 MHz 1T-SRAM

Other bits and pieces
Revolution will support a PPU chip (Physical Processing Chip). There will be 32 MB’s of its own RAM, which will link to the CPU and GPU and the Controller.

There will also be a separate sound card that will support only DD 5.1 – DTS 7.1, rumors has it will have 16 MB’s, like the Cube DSP

The second specs I've ran into have no source as of yet and I happened to have run into them over at the Gamespot forums.  They seem to be even more far fetched than Han Solo's though.  Anyway, here they are.

Quote

"Hollywood" 65nm Custom ATI R520
24 "Pipelines"
32 Texture Units
96 Arithmetic Logic Units (ALU)
192 Shader Operations per Cycle
700MHz Core

256-bit 512MB 1.8GHz GDDR3 Memory
57.6 GB/sec Bandwidth (at 1.8GHz)
300-350 Million Transistors
65nm Manufacturing
Shader Model 3.0
ATI HyperMemory
ATI Multi Rendering Technology (SLI)
Performance: Over 3x Radeon X800 XT (for single R520)

"Broadway" Custom 65nm PowerPC 970MP 128bit
Dual core processor @ 3GHz
1GHz EI bus
128MB 1S-TRAM
Each core has 1MB L2 cache (2MB total)
VMX instruction set
Altivec-compatible Vector/SIMD units -- one on each core.

1MB L2 cache
IBM's PowerTune technology
a programmable ABIST diagnostic
191 GFLOPs(just CPU)

Release Date: August 2006

I'm not tech savy so I can't really put in my 2 cents on any of these specs but hopefully others can break them down.  From what I've seen from other members on other threads, they say its unrealistic and too powerfull to fit into the Rev's small design.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:The Official IWATATON Speech Thread

heinous anus made me realise something when he made mention of the Rev being an rpg haven, Nintendo could be positioning themselves to snatch up both Japanese and American markets.  Nintendo is a sly bunch indeed.  The Rev controller compliments and expands control for FPS and RPGs (among other genres).  Its common knowledge that RPG's are huge in Japan and seem to be their most popular genre much like FPS are the current fad here in the US (curtiousy of Halo among others).

In looking at the overall picture, Nintendo has taken the upper hand in both genres/fronts.  FPSers and RPGs on the Rev are naturally going to be above and beyond the competitions offerings just by the mechanics of it.

EDIT: As for Sony trying to copy this revolution, I think the only way they'll be able to do it is to split the controller in half much like Nintendo has.  I know the thought seems weird but its just natural.  Try picking up a current gen controller and moving it to in one direction while pressing the analog stick in the oposite direction (whole controller right while analog left), it just doesn't feel right, feels counter productive in a way.  By splitting the controller in 2, the hand controlling the analog stick won't be affected or feel obligated to move in conjuntion with the controler/hand as a whole.

Well I don't have a prob with the Dpad being used as 4 buttons, its placed right where your thumb would be so it would be a shame not to take advantage of it.  I've already explained how this controller can work for Madden so I don't see how it shouldn't be able to work for any other of the current games we have today.

Just think about it though, this current generation is strongly defined by action and fpsers.  To me, it seems like the Rev could be positioned to steal the FPS fanbase hands down and we all know the Xbox lives off its FPSers.  The Rev versions of any multiplatform FPSer is going to be head and shoulders above its counterparts just becuase of this controller.

It all comes down to the developers now, if they dont slack off and actually put some effert into the multi titles then I can see the Rev doing some serious damage to the other system's marketshare.

For all the naysayers that say this control will not work for the command heavy games of today I have this to say.  I was just thinking and this controller could work for almost any game. Take for example Madden, I think we can all agree that said game uses basically ever button on all the current controllers moreso than your average game. With the current Rev controller, you can issue all the basic commands for Madden.

For running. Analog stick to control the player and showlder buttons will be stiff arm left and right. On the other half of the controller, the A button will be sprint, B to dive, D pad (left) juke left, D pad (right) juke right, D pad (up) shoulder charge, and D pad (down) spin. The gyro could be used to control the QB vision if you want to enable that or EA can work that into whatever scheme it wishes. In seeing this setup, anyone who is a Madden gamer can see how the controller can then also be setup for controlling the QB (passing icons can be B,A, D pad left, right, up, and down) sholder buttons can be pump fake and throw ball away, the click on the analog stick can open and close passing icons.   You can then slightly elevate the control high (and press the button for your corresponding reciever) and you can throw the ball high over the defender.  Lean the control slightly to the right as you pass and it'll place the ball to the side.  I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this, the posibilities are endless.

Anyways, if developers aren't lazy and are smart ( if I can figure out this working setup then I'm sure they can too) they can easily make multiplatform games work on Rev.

Nintendo Gaming / RE:More Revolution details soon?

Ran into 2 nuggets of info over at the Gamespot forums.

First we have another patent regarding laser projection, headsets, sterioscopic images etc etc....... Anyways, here's the link

Patent

The strange thing is that no where in the patent does it make mention of Nintendo but in the URL address, you can see it has Nintendo RS written in there. I'm not sure how relevent that is since the person was doing a search for Nintendo patents. That could've appeared given the word "Nintendo" was what he was searching for, yet RS wasn't included in his search. Probably meaningless but worth bringing to your attention regardless.

Second, one of the forum members over at Gamespot had a quick chat with Ray Almeda, Head-editor of the Advanced Media Network, and this is what he had to say

Quote

Almeda: “Why I know it's coming...? Let's just say that THREE THINGS are planned for that day that will be HUGE for Nintendo. 2 we know... 1 we speculate.”

Quote:
Almeda: “Why I know it's coming...? Let's just say that THREE THINGS are planned for that day that will be HUGE for Nintendo. 2 we know... 1 we speculate.”

DS109: "are you allowed to disclose those 2 things?"

Almeda: "yes, Mario 20th Anniversary, GB Micro launch, All on 9-13-05 in japan."

Almeda: "9-13-05 on the U.S.A., on the other hands is 9-14-05 in japan.

Almeda: "Tuesday night... that's all I'll say."

Almeda: "I'll spread the word... because I know more insider details that I can't talk about right now, but if you want more... pay attention to AMN on Tuesday night... possibly other sites will follow too."

The forum member says he has proof of said conversation and is willing to provide it with a PM. If this holds up to be true, seems like we'll have some type of news coming out of AMN's site on tuesday night. Only a matter of days now people lol.

Someone over at the Gamespot forums has simplified the recent patent in his own words. I don't know exactly how accurate he is but its interesting to see what he's found. Anyway, here it is...

Quote

Simplified Explanation

~~~~~~~~
What this means is that, there are 2 pieces of the console hardware.
The main console (system 54) does this:
Sends audio/video signals to the television set, meaning it applies what "system 50" processes to the audio. Basically it puts the calculations into the formula in the correct order.
And the second, unshown hardware, (system 50) does this:
Processes the digital models, displays some/all of the world from [viewpoint x], can "interactively change the viewpoint in response to real time inputs from handeld controllers 52a, 52b, or other input devices. This lets the player "see the world through the eyes of someone within or outside of the world". It also can display 2-d images, but is primarily used to "create very realistic and exciting game play" or other graphical interactions.
And the input devices (aka: controllers)
Will not always take this example. They can take "a variety of forms".
````` The REALLY interesting thing is that, if this is true, Nintendo hasn't even shown us the REAL "revolution" console yet. What they have shown us (the black box) is simply a communication device between the ACTUAL console (the part that does the calculations), the player (via the controller), and the television screen. We haven't seen ANYTHING yet. Literally.

The clues are adding up. Think of it what you wish. But, interestingly enough, it all sounds a lot like what this guy wrote:

http://revolutionspecs.blogspot.com/

Here's a pic the poster provided. We've seen it a few times before but I'm not sure if there have been any changes to it since the last time we saw it. If you notice, the mysterious "system 50" is labeled in the pic but its just pointing right into thin air. I guess there still hiding things.

Check this quote that I ran into over at ConnectRevolution.com.  It was originally posted over in the IGN boards by an EB employee. Anyways, here's the post

Quote

So I work at an EB Games in Sammamish, WA. which is about 5 minutes away from Redmond, WA. (HEADQUARTERS of Nintendo of America) Today we closed at 6:00 p.m. but at about 5:50 a guy came in wearing an NAO badge on his hip.

When asked about Nintendo he said that he works in the "Treehouse". (Which, as he explained is an area of Nintendo that works on ideas, development, and marketing.)

I jumped to the point and asked him about the controller... here was his response:

mischief "I've seen the Revolution Controller, and it's something that will absolutely set Nintendo ahead this next console race. It truly is something so revolutionary you will wonder how you played games without it before. I promise you that when the details are released you won't even have a doubt as to which console you will want to play first." The next may not be word for word but it's the main points he stated:

-Certain games: I.E. - SPLINTER CELL are working on a totally different, yet more stealth control schemes just for the REVO.
-Many companies are jumping on board due to cheap development costs and high results
-NO demo's in store, too "sensitive" and "Not enough space" to properly use the controller
-The "BIG THREE" (Mario, Metroid, Zelda) will be seen, played, and heard as you have never imagined before.
-Nintendo has the info ready to be released, and they WANT to tell us, but are so worried that other companies (Microsoft and Sony) will steal the idea, they will make the customers and gamers wait until they see final plans for PS3 and launch (Or finished Hardware) of the 360.

That's really all I remember.

Believe it, and you can doubt all you want but don't shoot the messenger.

As usual, take it as you will.

This is another rumored Rev leak that has made the rounds in a few forums.  This PDF supposed to Nintendo's concept model for its Rev controller that its showing 3rd parties at the moment.

http://dbfilms.net/NintendoRevolution.pdf

Many have already disproven its credibility stating that the blurred out text was copied from a Sony PDF.  What I wonder though is why would the author of this create it with such a glaring mistake? Couldn't they just simply not even include text or use a Nintendo related pdf to copy from? I have yet to see the picture though so I can't comment on it myself. I'm waiting for my ridiculously slow cable modem to finish dling adobe acrobat .

Its almost as if they wanted it to get debunked so quickly. Could the pictures of the control be real but the Sony pdf text have been used to discredit it? In that way they can actually reveal the controller but have people simpley write it off as fake, thus they avoid getting in much trouble from Nintendo. If you reveal something your not supposed to but no one believes you, then in a way, you haven't revealed anything lol.

I see what all know its fake but here's some good observation from a Gamespot member.

Quote

OK,

Heres what I've got.

If you go to the real press.nintendo.com... you will see it requires a UserName and Password to enter.

Now in the URL line type press.nintendo.com/object?id=7972 That is the URL that appeared in the screen grab in question.

It says... "Object 7972 is not displayable."

Now change that number at the end into 7973.

It says the same thing right?

Now change that number into something higher or random.

It says... "Object ID specified does not or no longer exists."

You see, that doucument referred to in the picture in question did/does exist, as well as another one 1 digit higher.

So, thoese two doucuments do exist. A random number is most likely to come up empty.

This means that either the guy got lucky to know the number of a doucument, or he really did see a document with that number.

Heres a possiblity, he wasn't a member to the press section, just a small site/news publication who likes to check that page to get the public information that doesn't require a password.

However, maybe he stumbled upon the document posted in the public area my mistake. Nintendo, quickly fixed this error and moved it to the members section, hence the reason "Object 7972 is not displayable" rather than "Object ID specified does not or no longer exists."

Well thats what I've got right now. Ain't nothing like some fun spectulation at 6:30 in the A.M.

Also, this from a member over at N-sider

If Matt is right about the relative announcement date, I'm going to guess that we might see something at Penny Arcade Expo. It runs this Fri-Sun, Nintendo is attending, and there is a "Secret Event" on the schedule.

Thats the same thing I was thinking Mario.  Well members over at the Gamespot forums have shown how easy it is to pull off a fake like this. I don't know what to make of the claims from people (Bill lol) that have said they actually saw it on the site before it was taken down  (or even that claim in itself lol) but there is one thing we can be sure of, something was on that page and Nintendo has taken it down.  If you go to the URL in the pic, something seems to have been taken down, what was it though I don't know.

Anyways, here's the link to the fake "news" made by the Gamespot member.
