TalkBack / Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (New 3DS) Hands-on Preview
« on: March 02, 2015, 09:25:13 PM »
Were there any improvements to the quest log at all? In the Wii version, I found the quests very difficult to keep track of, and to find where to go in order to complete them. I guess I was hoping for something like a map that shows where they are, and/or to know if the monster I'm currently targeting is part of a quest or not.

Incidentally, this Wired article has the best explanation I've seen yet for why we only get the XL (although they buried the lede):

http://www.wired.com/2015/01/new-nintendo-3ds-xl-2/

Quote
First, recall that Nintendo has actually phased out the regular 3DS in the US. The only models on sale here are the $200 3DS XL and the $100 Nintendo 2DS, an inexpensive low-end model with a 2-D display and a single-piece molded-plastic body instead of a clamshell design.

I hadn't realised it, but it seems for the past few months(?) there have been only two models on sale in the US: the 2DS and the 3DS XL. The 'normal' 3DS was already gone, and nobody noticed. Probably because nobody was buying it.

Note that Japan never got the 2DS, so even with the 'New' variants replacing the old, they still only have two models on sale. Just like we do.

This doesn't explain Europe or Australia, though.

Every time I see one of these I keep expecting Wii Mode to be gone, and Wii stuff to show up on the same menu as Wii U stuff, like how 3DS handles DS and DSi stuff. I'm just amazed that, two years later, we're still stuck with the weird, uncomfortable hack that is Wii Mode.

I'm curious which characters you thought were clones. I'm not disagreeing, but rather I'm used to picking a small handful of favourites so I'm not generally familiar with the entire roster.

Seems like if you don't like the Mercedes cars, you could just not select them?

The problem is that other people you race with online are going to select them, and then you'll end up seeing them anyway.

TalkBack / Re: Unannounced Ideas for a 3DS Zelda Linger at Nintendo
« on: July 08, 2014, 08:47:24 AM »
No. Do make us wait. It's always bothered me how video game companies announce things so far in advance. It's so disappointing to hear about a new Zelda for the first time, only to realise I won't be playing it until 1.5-2.5 years later. What's the point? Tell me about it when I can buy it.

Nintendo is always working on a new Zelda. That's no big secret. Stop talking about it, Nintendo, when you haven't even figured it out for yourselves yet.

This does not provide any capability that these devices did not already have (smartphones already offer tethering and 3DS can connect to it like any other Wi-Fi hotspot). It only makes it easier to do a thing you could already do.

Nintendo needs this in Japan because fewer and fewer people bother subscribing to any home internet service at all (they don't see the point, when cell phones are so good). That means there is no Wi-Fi in the home. And free public Wi-Fi hotspots never really caught on in Japan like they did in the US. So that's a problem for Nintendo, if people have no way to connect to the eShop to buy stuff.

The point of this application is to make it easier to tether (again, a thing you could already do, if you knew how) to encourage people to do it and to make up for Wi-Fi becoming less common in Japan.

I'm lukewarm on all the NSMB games but I loved DKCR, played it over and over on Wii, then bought it on 3DS and played it again. Am I the only one...?

I'm not even sure quite what it is about it, it just has so much more charm. Rayman, too. NSMB feels formulaic, uninspired.

I entered my password wrong three times before I figured out that it was because the Miiverse login screen uses a completely different keyboard than the normal system keyboard that's used everywhere else. The vertical rows of letters are not aligned like they normally are (look on a computer keyboard, A is not directly below Q... it is down and slightly to the right). This was causing me to type where a letter should be, rather than where it actually was. Also, the shift key behaves like a caps lock key, which might cause you problems if you have a password with capitals in it. On the normal keyboard, there are two separate keys for shift and caps lock, but not on this one.

Awful, bizarre UI design decision to use a different keyboard. Can't imagine why they did that.

Anyway, just pay very close attention to what's happening on screen when typing your password.

Now it accepts my password, but I'm getting error 011-3051 whenever I try to get to eShop. Miiverse works.

Sonic Generations is also on the 3DS eShop as of 9/5. It came out a while ago on cartridge, but wasn't on the eShop until now.

This has actually been available since the North American launch day.

Thanks for writing this, because I feel exactly the same way. I've completed and enjoyed OoT and all of the console ones (and some handheld ones) after it, but not LttP or anything earlier. My main problem with it is that it's just too hard. I just can't figure out how to not die.

I'm very worried that the 3DS one will have the same awful combat as LttP. I hope not.

« on: April 05, 2013, 08:49:55 AM »
I don't remember seeing a news post here about the previous system update, or the Save Transfer Tool that was released on the eShop along with it. I had been waiting a long time for this, so I could finally get rid of my cartridges and have all of my games with me at all times (well, except the DS ones). Yes, I am a little bit crazy.

Here's a post from some other site: http://www.siliconera.com/2013/03/26/nintendo-3ds-system-update-adds-save-transfer-tool/

Also, I have seen a noticeable jump in the speed of my 3DS since that system was updated recently. [...] Opening and closing applications and folders also seems to be quicker.

But what about Safari, is it snappier?

Sorry, wrong web site...

Sonic Racing demo isn't there (North America 3DS eShop). Searching for it, it shows the game's release date as 3/29, but no demo. I see the MH3 demo so the store did update.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U European VC: The 50Hz Debacle
« on: January 28, 2013, 09:11:54 AM »
Don't know about OoT but Majora's Mask on VC has numerous improvements: widescreen, textures and framerate (still pretty choppy though).

Majora's Mask (and VC OoT) is not widescreen. The game outputs a 4:3 image, which the Wii (and Wii U in Wii mode) annoyingly stretches to fill a 16:9 screen, making all of the characters look deformed compared to the original. This can be fixed on some TVs by setting it to 4:3 mode.

The textures also have not changed. Framerate improvements (as in a reduction of framerate drops, not an increase in the maximum framerate), if any, have nothing to do with any changes made to the game itself, only the more powerful hardware it's running on.

What has changed (IIRC) is that the game, like other N64 VC games, is running at a higher resolution than on the original N64, which will appear to make the image look sharper, especially if you're using component or HDMI. But the textures are as blurry and muddy as ever. MM had better textures than OoT to begin with because of the use of the Expansion Pak, which is included as part of the emulation.

TalkBack / Re: Wii U Virtual Console Coming in the Future
« on: November 14, 2012, 10:24:53 AM »
The Wii U Pro Controller is the same price as the DualShock 3 and Xbox 360 Controller, so I wouldn't call it overpriced.

The DualShock 3 and Xbox controllers can be used with every game on their respective systems, unlike the Pro Controller. That's my point. How much it's worth to me is determined by how useful it is.

I surmised as much from their previous vague statements on the matter. (Why is Nintendo completely unable to articulate anything at all clearly? A mystery for the ages...)

What I want to know is: will the Pro Controller be usable with Wii games?

I read something on GameStop's web site that suggested no, but they're hardly an official source and it wouldn't surprise me if someone there made it up (based on Nintendo's vague guidance). If the answer really is no, however, that makes it a whole lot less useful than the Classic Controller Pro (which I have so far held off on buying), which is a shame considering the Pro's already-ridiculous price.

Nintendo Gaming / NoA Interview?

You guys have short memories. We've seen this before and we'll see it again.

January 26, 2006: Nintendo announces DS Lite http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/11047

June 4, 2012: Nintendo says report of 3DS XL is based on 'speculation', contains 'a number of inaccuracies' http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30431
June 13, 2012: Miyamoto 'satisfied' with current 3DS, says it's 'the best for this generation' http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30720
June 21, 2012: Nintendo announces 3DS XL http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/news/30811

If they pre-announce anything too far in advance, people will stop buying the current one. This is a very well-known phenomenon in the computer industry, called the Osborne effect, named after one of the first companies that went out of business because of it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_effect

Nintendo will release whatever they want, whenever they want, regardless of anything they say to the contrary right up until the day of its release. Stop being so surprised.

Whippersnappers.
