Telltale Confirms Sam & Max Plans for Wii
« on: March 20, 2007, 09:35:54 AM »
The publisher hopes to release retail and downloadable games for Wii.
 http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/newsArt.cfm?artid=13173

In February, we reported that Telltale Games was looking for programmers to work on Wii software.  The job listing referenced adapting existing PC assets to the platform, raising hopes that the Sam & Max adventure games might be making their way to Nintendo's console.

Yesterday, in an interview with Shacknews, Telltale CEO Dan Connors confirmed that Wii titles are in the works:

"Well, we're hoping to get on to both consoles, with Live Arcade and Virtual Console--I'm sorry, on all three consoles! But we're starting with Wii and Xbox, on both of their online services and retail as well."

While the company is still working out the details with Nintendo, things are looking good for Sam & Max fans.  Check out the full interview at Shacknews.

Upon further inspection, we've amended this article because while the context suggests Sam & Max may be coming to Wii, it isn't stated explicitly. Our apologies.

Yesssssssss!  Now all that we need is LucasArts to not be jerks and release all of their old games on the VC and MAKE A NEW MONKEY ISLAND!

Oh my! I will SO CONSUME THIS (as long as there is indeed a retail release). And Lucasarts smell, they won't ever unsmell again.

Well I was just about to buy the PC versions online... I guess I'll wait for now.

What is wrong with everyone in the world?

Shack:  Much ado has been made of your job solicitations for Wii and Xbox 360 programmers. What can you say about your plans there?

Dan Connors: Well, we're hoping to get on to both consoles, with Live Arcade and Virtual Console--I'm sorry, on all three consoles! But we're starting with Wii and Xbox, on both of their online services and retail as well. We want to open as much distribution as possible and reach as many people as possible, so when we go out and talk to a license holder we can say, "Hey, we can get your license in front of all these people. Come with us and we'll make sure it's a great product." The distribution channel drives a lot of that, especially if you're independent and you're an emerging media publisher. I think there's some room for us to grab a stake.

He says things like "hoping" and "talk to license holder," and everyone seems to read it as "We're making Sam & Max for Wii!"
Telltale has made other games, you know. I suspect they'll continue to do so in the future.
Might they port Sam & Max to Wii? It's possible. Even likely. They seem to want to. But, and correct me if I'm wrong, they certainly haven't confirmed it.

The point of what he's saying here is that they need to get content running on the consoles to convince future license holders that they have the connections and audience that will benefit the license holder.  He's not talking about the license for Sam & Max.

You're right in the sense that they aren't specifically saying "Sam & Max will be on Wii".  However, given the context of this interview and looking at the response to the next question in particular, I'd say it is very likely that they want to use the success of Sam & Max to build those bridges on to consoles and work out future products from there.

And my point is that "very likely" does not mean "confirmed," and shouldn't be reported as such. If it did, Sam & Max for Wii was "confirmed" when Telltale hired a Wii developer in the first place.

You know, I can't argue with that.  I've updated the article accordingly. Thanks for catching my mis-step.

If I may be pedantic, the problem was that you took it to be implicit, but it wasn't explicit.
