Mega Man co-creator Keiji Inafune has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund his new side-scrolling action game, Mighty No. 9, with a Wii U release possible if enough money is raised.
Heavily influenced by the Mega Man games of the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, Mighty No. 9 puts the player in the shoes of Beck, the 9th Mighty Number robot, as he runs and guns his way through several stages to reach his crazed Mighty No. compatriots, whom he must defeat in order to obtain their unique powers.
Where Mighty No. 9 differs from the series that inspired it is in Beck's ability to transform his body into different tools, such as giant magnets or a battle tank. He can also gain temporary power-ups by dispatching enemies in specific ways and storing up their "Xel" energy.
The Kickstarter campaign has already achieved its initial $900,000 target after just two days of funding. If $2.5 million is raised before the campaign's closure on October 1, the game, which is currently for PC only, will be brought to home consoles, including Wii U.
Mighty No. 9 is in the works at Inafune's independent studio, Comcept, under a veteran team of former Capcom developers, including Mega Man 1 and 2 level designer Naoya Tomita, Mega Man X3 and Legends art designer Shinsuke Komaki and original Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae.
The game is not expected to see release until spring 2015.
