Nintendo Gaming / RE: Progressive Scan VGA Box Help
« on: January 02, 2006, 05:38:58 AM »
So then GC games with progressive mode support will play on a computer monitor set to 640x480 without the usual distortion that comes from playing low-res TV content on a monitor?  What about non-progressive games?  Do they still play at 640x480?  How would they look on a monitor?

I've been thinking about getting one of these so I can play my GC on my computer, but I don't really understand what 480p means.  Is 480p the same as 640x480 resolution on a computer monitor?  If I play on my monitor, will I be able to play at a native resolution?

Nintendo Gaming / RE: Another "Skies of Arcadia: Legends" question

I keep hearing that many stores were recently (within the last six weeks) selling it for under $20, but I have yet to find one store selling it for less than $48 and change.  But there are plenty of individuals selling it for outrageous prices.

Nintendo Gaming / Another "Skies of Arcadia: Legends" question
« on: January 15, 2004, 03:57:29 PM »
I hate to retread an old topic, but I just have to ask this.

When you take into account the rave reviews it got, the overall lack of RPGs on the GameCube, and the fact that it is apparently a good one (for a console RPG), and compound that with the fact that there are now people selling brand new copies on Amazon for as much as $150 (which would seem to indicate that there are misguided people willing to pay half again as much as a GameCube for it), why on earth would Sega discontinue production of "Skies of Arcadia: Legends," a game that is still less than a year old?  At the very least you'd think they'd just mark it down to $19 or $29 so that gamers like me who are only marginally interested in it will buy it.  But people still seem to want it (hence the outrageous resale prices.)  But if that is the case, it couldn't have sold all that poorly.  What's the deal here?

I sent emails to some of the jackasses selling it on Amazon telling them I'd happily pay them $29.99 for it, but that any more is ridiculous.  I know - supply and demand and all that.  But the fact that there is a demand at all means it should still be in production, don't you think?

And finally - is there anyone here willing to part with a copy of "Skies of Arcadia: Legends" for about $30?

Quite funny.  And they will continue to "not sell" to me unless the price goes down.

Yes.  But sometimes we have to make choices.  Yes, I'd like to own and play Skies, but on the other hand, I know I won't get as much enjoyment out of a Japanese-style RPG as I would out of, say, the latest Neverwinter Nights expansion (which is cheaper).  If I manage to find a copy of Skies for under $30, I'll buy it.  As it is, I feel that $50 is too much, and more than that is an outright ripoff.

Ehh... I dont think Prince of Persia is worth it at all, i saw the video review on Gamespot and they said that it was easy and the only reason why they gave it such a high score was because of the graphics, but splinter cell is good.

We'll see.  But I also picked up Beyond Good & Evil for $19.99.  An excellent price, I think, for a game that is so critically acclaimed.  The length of the game, though, is why I wouldn't pay the original price for it.

If anyone here wants to sell their copy of Skies of Arcadia Legends for $25, I'll buy it right now.

Do yourself a favor and go buy it now, even if its 50 bucks.

Nope.  If I can't get it for under $30, I'll never get it at all.  There are just too many other great games I can get for less money.  I'm sure I'll be missing out on a great game, but I can get two other great games for the price of that one.  And with the way my money's going these days, I gotta go for that.  I just picked up Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell for $49.99.  I think I got a better deal than just "Skies," good as it may be.

And when I really want to play a RPG, I can always fire up Neverwinter Nights on my computer.  For that matter, there's also Baldur's Gate, Baldur's Gate 2, Fallout 1 & 2, and any number of others.

9
Then every place that sells games is greedy.  Even Wal-Mart wants $49 for it.

10
Hell.  If I have to wait for the release of Nintendo's next console to buy Arcadia, I will.  Surely it will be cheaper by then.  But why the heck isn't it cheaper now?

11
So why aren't new copies selling for less than $49.99?  I was at an EBGames last week and they were selling a copy for that price.

Nintendo Gaming / Why is "Skies of Arcadia Legends" still so expensive?
« on: January 07, 2004, 04:51:42 PM »
I've been waiting for the price of "Skies of Arcadia Legends" to drop a bit before buying it, and I've been waiting a while.  But the price just never seems to drop and I don't understand why.  Even blockbusters like Metroid and Zelda have come down in price since their release, but "Skies of Arcadia Legends" is still going for $49.  Some jackasses are even trying to sell used copies for $69.99 on Amazon.  What's the deal?  I know it's supposed to be a good game, but I also know its sales were less than stellar.  So how can they justify charging so much?  I'm willing to spend around $30 for this one.  Anyone have any idea when it's going to hit that?

This is also incorrect.  Every computer Apple makes is designed in-house by their own industrial design team, headed by Jonathan Ive.  Much of the parts they use inside the box are third party, but the overall machine is Apple born and bred.

No, that's incorrect.  iMacs are very much in production, and are more popular than ever.  Perhaps you are confusing the termination of the old, gumdrop-shaped iMac in favor of the new, flat-screen iMacs?

That's funny.  I can find the game in a search on their site, but when I click the link to the game, it tells me that page does not exist.

Personally, I love the big thick manuals that come with RPGs and strategy games.  I live for complex games that take months to beat.  I loved Wind Waker, but it was just too damn easy.  Way, way too easy.  This is not a good trend.

Actually, it was released in 1998.  You're probably thinking of Warcraft.

If StarCraft:Ghost goes XBox exlusive, I'm going to drive an explosive-laden truck into the MS headquarters and watch the evil empire burn.

Anyone notice that Wind Waker just dropped from 7 to 11 at GameRankings.com?  Seems strange that this could happen so fast.  Perhaps am XBox fanboy deliberately panned it on some game site to drop its rank.  What gives?

It doesn't affect the quality of the game, of course.  And I still think its better than Halo.  But it does seem strange.

How can the cube give you what it doesn't have? You're asking for Bioware to make a non-linear RPG for a console which is very far away from that demographic.

And I can understand the whole, Apple = quality over quantity = Nintendo. But the thing is, I bought the cube for games like Zelda, Metroid and Mario while the Mac really doesn't get much of anything that the PC doesn't already have, except for a handfull of things like Zork Nemesis and those Bungie titles before it got bought by MS.

At this point, the argument is academic.  I understand now why the 'Cube gets so few RPGs.  I just wish that it wasn't the case.  Thanks.

And I bought my 'Cube for those same reasons, SC5.  As I said, as long as I have games like Zelda, Metroid and Mario, I'm happy with my cube.  And as long as I have games like Neverwinter Nights, Civ 3, MoO 3, and Unreal 2003 on my Mac, I'm happy with that, too.  Having a Mac, like having a GameCube, means that while I may not get all of the good games, I usually get the best.

Hell even Unix based OS's get more gaming support than the macs.

Hoboy.  Let's not let this thread devolve into one of THOSE discussions.  But, for the record, Mac OSX is a UNIX based OS.  And we get a lot more games and gaming support than Linux users do.  A lot more.  You must be thinking of the Mac circa 1995.  Turns out, with my Mac and my 'Cube, I have more than enough games to keep me playing for longer than I probably should.  At this rate, I may never finish my thesis.

I just want to play decent RPGs on my 'Cube.  Is that so much to ask?

Well, funny thing is, I bought a Mac for the same reason you probably bought a GameCube: despite its modest deficiencies and mild lack of support from certain developers, it's the best damn machine of its kind on the market and the software made for it, while lower in quantity, is of the highest quality around.  I feel about Apple the same way I feel about Nintendo.  Surely you can understand that.

Does that answer your question?

Now, let's no one else mention Mac vs PC in this thread again.

Oh, and, by the way, my 'manhood' is entirely unaffected by my choice of PCs...
...my choice of consoles on the other hand...

Well, just in case neither Morrowind or KotOR ever makes it to the Mac, I'll just have to make due with Neverwinter Nights and the umpteen bajillion official and user-created mods to fill my non-linear, Western RPG gaming needs.  But it would still be nice to have a game like that on my 'Cube.

Can you tell I'm primarily a computer gamer?  The irony is that I bought the 'Cube to fill in the obvious gaps that being a Mac gamer leaves in my gaming library, only to discover that I had purchased the console with the most gaps in its gaming library.  Oh, well.  So long as Nintendo keeps giving me Metroid, Zelda, and Eternal Darkness-style games, I'll be happy.
