Rumor Cats: March Nintendo Direct Leak Edition

We put Bowie on the case of batting at this big Dutch Nintendo Direct rumor.

Woke up to quite a surprise this afternoon when I sauntered over to the food dish. Apparently Dutch site N1ntendo.nl uncovered a whopper of a treat with a hot Nintendo Direct scoop. My feline senses tingled at the prospect of leaks, and I did what I do best: I threw up my breakfast. After that, I did some digging, though.

I had said there was trouble afoot with Fox McCloud and friends (still no cats in that game...) a while ago, and while I stand by that like the bird I left on my master's bed, it seems like, if this leak is correct, Star Fox Zero is indeed coming out in April. It's also getting a "First Print Edition" that will include something. We don't know yet. It's all vague, which makes it somewhat easy to doubt. I found myself nodding in agreement with this, though, because I caught a whiff of news about a "First Print Edition" of Star Fox Zero before. So maybe this is right? Maybe it's not?

A few of my reliable sources/catnip dealers all sang the same warbly tune with these rumors, though. The N1ntendo.nl rumor is not the first place I heard about Super Nintendo games on New 3DS, Monster Hunter Generations, Lost Reavers, or that Metroid Prime: Federation Force isn't the next form of the Loch Ness Monster. I have a strong feeling we will see more than what is mentioned here in tomrrow's Nintendo Direct, but this leak passes the cursory sniff test, especially since other kittens echo the announcements. Doesn't make it ironclad, but maybe it's like 80-90% likely? Something like that.

But really? Fire Emblem in Monster Hunter? The potential for Super Mario RPG on the go? This is exciting. I'm going to go take a cat nap before more stuff leaks.

I thought for sure it was going to say Star Fox is delayed again.
That is something I've been expecting so I was happy to not see that

I'd much rather get GBA games on 3DS than SNES games, but I guess I'll take it.

InvaderRENMarch 02, 2016

I would rather see GBA on the 3DS as well, but I assume that the NX will do that instead. If it's based on the Wii U architecture, those GBA games may be available day one on the NX.
Also, SNES games are fundamentally CONSOLE games. They really, for the most part, don't lend themselves well to portable gaming. I wouldn't say no, but I'm happy to leave the SNES games on the Wii U.

OedoMarch 02, 2016

I would be pretty excited about SNES on the New 3DS. I don't know if it's because my experience with SNES style games is mostly on the GBA and DS, but those games have always felt right at home on handhelds for me.

rygarMarch 02, 2016

I was surprised when I bought my 3DS that SNES games weren't available.  I've been wanting to play Super Metroid and LTTP for a long time.  I hope this rumor is true.

From a Dog's eye view:

The Master fed me a delicious meal this morning (though it was no different from any other meal), and promised me a cookie tomorrow at 5p.m.! Alas, I fear the wait will be unbearable in dog years.

But Master shouldn't have put the cookie bag on the shelf, because I scrambled up on my hind legs and did some "investigative reporting"! I am so proud of myself, though master will likely use the newspaper on me. My tail will droop between my legs.

I learned that the fucking fox in the backyard is still around, and might be bringing friends with him when he goes hunting for rabbits and frogs during his next appearance. I will sit at the back door and wait for him to arrive on schedule- right when the master is not around.

I hate that fucking fox.

Oh! Oh! Oh! Master plans to put a new toy in the living room soon! But, I already have that toy outside. Why do I need that toy inside, too? Master must consider buying the toy only once, and then letting me use it inside AND outside.

Master has called the veterinarian and scheduled my annual worms check. The process will be grueling, painful, and reward me little, but I must endure it because the veterinarian drops sweet materials to me when we are done. I will tell future Generations of this.

I hid under the sofa as Master paid exorbitant fees to watch zombies on television. Has he Lost his mind? He could watch zombie movies on cable, and use that money to buy new toys instead! We will see if this madness pans out.

Aunt Samus was supposed to come an babysit for me tomorrow, as well! But she called Master and said she was sick- I'll have to stay with the four bratty marines down the street instead. They don't play with my toys the way Aunt Samus does. DAMNATION!

Snes games on 3DS? Call me back when Lufia is around.

Considering the sheer amount of GBA games that were SNES ports I find this statement pretty ironic.

But really what makes Super Metroid a console game while Metroid: Zero Mission is a handheld game?  They're the exact same type of gameplay.  Or A Link to the Past vs. Minish Cap or Super Mario World vs. NSMB?

What I think is silly is just that Nintendo is very arbitrary with what VC games go on what platform.  You would assume something like GBA games would be on the 3DS or both platforms.  If they were going to pick only one platform for them picking the console over the handheld is just bizarre and goes against audience expectations.

And now we have word of a Monster Hunter Generations trademark.

Honestly, it sounds like an English name for that Monster Hunter Stories game that Capcom announced a while back. That or Monster Hunter X.

EnnerMarch 02, 2016

I have doubts that Monster Hunter could become an annual series outside of Japan, but maybe Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was the tipping point. I would certainly love to play Monster Hunter Cross sooner rather than later.

As for Fire Emblem being the next cross promotion for Monster Hunter, given the anime status of Fire Emblem and the Nintendo cross overs in MH4U, this was long over due.

It wouldn't make sense if it was Monster Hunter Stories given how Monster Hunter X is repurposing elements from the past four numbered Monster Hunter games. I'll be surprised if Generations something different.

I would argue that some games are much more well suited to the handheld space. Resident Evil: Revelations episodic nature made it much easier to pick up and put down, whereas playing it on a home console made the narrative feel choppy. Likewise, A Link Between World's fast travel, brisk pacing, and inventory system made it more portable than A Link to the Past. Now, in regards to Metroid, that's a hard question, though I think the streamlined, objective-based elements of Fusion and Zero Mission make them more portable than Super.

Your question raises a pretty great point, however, which is central to the idea of video games "aging". As hardware becomes more advanced, it's easier to port a game to a handheld that was once on a console. However, that doesn't mean the game is best suited for that sort of hardware, just that it is easier. With the Wii, Nintendo created an entire chunk of their library that I would personally ALWAYS want to play on a home console. Maybe some people disagree. However, not all games work well enough when ported to handheld. I firmly disapprove of the existence of Xenoblade Chronicles on New 3DS, but hey, the system has to have ONE exclusive on it, right?

Are there any games you wouldn't want to play on handheld?

Metal GearMarch 03, 2016

There are no games that I wouldn't play on a portable format. I actually finished Xenoblade Chronicles 3D only on 3DS because I don't have that much time to sit in front of my TV and handhelds are more suited for me. Most JRPGs are long games but they are making their way to handhelds. Because of this, I'm actually pretty excited about the prospect of playing SNES games on the go. Bring on Super Metroid, A Link To The Past, Super Mario World, Final Fantasy VI and so much more!

Yeah.  Every single game ever made. :D  I always prefer to play on a TV.  To me the only real concerns for a handheld game is that the text has to be readable on the small screen and there has to be flexibility in regards to saving your game at a moments notice.
