2015 Top 5: DLC and Amiibo Use

Top 5 DLC of 2015

by the NWR Staff - January 14, 2016, 12:23 pm EST

From Smash Bros. to Splatoon, we dive into the year in DLC to find the best pieces.

5. Super Smash Bros. December Update

In December, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS added Cloud Strife from Final Fantasy VII. Really, we all kind of still think this is a joke and we’ve been hallucinating for the past few months. But until this weird reality blows apart, we can play as the Final Fantasy VII star in Smash Bros., and it turns out that he is a fun, unique character – easily one of the most interesting DLC additions to the game so far. This update also added the Midgar stage, which featured a variety of fun Final Fantasy summons. Unfortunately, it only had two songs, which is a crushing disappointment coming from such a musically magnificent series. To make up for that, this update added a Geno (of Super Mario RPG fame) Mii outfit, which, much like Cloud being in Smash Bros., seemed impossible. And there’s a Chocobo hat, because why not.

4. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Monthly Updates

For months following the February release of Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, free monthly DLC came out, adding a variety of new quests and monsters. That by itself is great, but even better is the fact that these DLC packs included tons of Nintendo and Capcom fan service. You can have Palicoes dressed up as Mario, Luigi, and even Sonic the Hedgehog. You can have gear that makes you look like Samus Aran. You can wield the Master Sword. Mega Man, Isabelle, and Mr. Resetti even show up. Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate was already a meaty game, and these DLC updates kept adding even more to it.

3. Super Mario Maker December Update

If the Super Mario Maker website was all that was in this update, it’d probably still be on this list. The website gives players a way to sort through user’s levels in a manner that just isn’t currently possible in the actual game. While using a website to cue up levels on your Wii U still isn’t great, the site is still a substantial update to improve the experience. Also, this update added the Fire Clown Car, Bumper, and P Switch Door, all of which made the level creation even deeper.

2. Super Smash Bros. June Update

Released right before E3 2015, the June update for Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS featured three new characters and a wide variety of Mii costumes. While Roy and Lucas were mostly similar to their old Smash selves, Ryu mixed the world of Smash with Street Fighter, going so far as to let players input Street Fighter button combos to execute attacks. While the Street Fighter stage sadly lacks Guile’s Theme as music, it’s a fun addition to the selection.

1. Splatoon August Update

The weekly updates for Splatoon adding weapons and occasionally a new level were nice and all, but the mammoth August update brought substantial new tweaks to the very fabric of Nintendo’s surprisingly wonderful shooter. First off, it added Rainmaker, a ranked mode modeled after Capture the Flag, only if the flag was also an all-powerful weapon. It also added better matchmaking options, letting you team up with up to three other friends in Ranked Mode and also create your own custom games with anywhere from two to eight people. Splatoon was easily one of the best games of 2015, and this update was, in our eyes, the best update of 2015.

Is there going to be audio posted for this?  I'm interested, but don't have time to sit and watch a 40 min YouTube video. (Yes, I'm old and out of touch with how things are done these days. And I like it that way.)
