Super Smash Bros. for Wii U & 3DS E3 2014 Character Guide

Mega Man, Villager, Rosalina & Luma, Greninja

These four new characters are all vastly different.

Mega Man

TYP: I can't say I got the hang of his robot power moves, but I liked Mega Man's agility, and he seemed to have a good mix of ranged and close-up attacks. He was a favorite amongst E3 attendees.

Villager

Neal: The Villager was my biggest character surprise at E3. I didn’t get excited when he/she was revealed, but when I got my hands on the Animal Crossing character, I fell in love. This is the best troll character this side of Wario. The down B, which is hard to pull off, is a three-step process. First, you press it once to plant a seed. Then, you press it again to water the seed. Lastly, you have to press down B several more times to chop the tree down. If, by chance, it lands on someone else, you do massive damage. It’s hard to pull off, but when you nail it, you feel like you just pulled off three Falcon Punches in a row.

I also adore the side B move where the Villager happily hops on a Gyroid that explodes upon contact. There’s a lot of variation to this, as you can jump off of it at any time and watch it zoom across the screen before petering out and falling to the ground. While I’m not sure how to trigger it, it also can go backwards. When I figure out how to do that, I expect to mess with my friends and foes constantly.

A lot of the smash attacks from the Villagers are also cute and inspired by the game. The dashing side A move has the little guy tripping while holding a plant. The side A move is short-ranged, as it involves throwing a bowling ball on the ground right in front of you. I found it useful to knock out enemies near the edge, as it is dangerous when it hits.

The Villager’s Final Smash is hard to pull off, as it seems to have a range similar to Link’s. Except, instead of a Triforce-powered sword slashing, the Nook gang builds a house around your enemies and blows them away.

Rosalina & Luma

Kim: I found this pair hard to get used to during the time I had. Rosalina usually acts as kind of the puppet master to Luma, as she moves slowly on her own with less powerful attacks. Luma is used mostly for range attacks and can pack quite a punch if you time it right. Unfortunately, Rosalina is a lighter character, so it’s hard to coordinate her attacks without getting sent flying. All things considered, there is a lot of potential, but the duo is pretty complex and should only be used if you’re more of a tactical fighter.

Greninja

Kim: Greninja was absolutely fun to play as. His standard special move, the Water Shuriken, was quick to charge and release, giving me time to connect other attacks easily. His defensive down special move created a substitute to take hits, but also allowed him to reappear and attack his enemy at the same time. Basically everything about Greninja was fast and furious, giving players great control and options to really push this character in battle.

I'm not happy about how it sounds like they nerfed Samus AGAIN. They already made her much weaker in Brawl (she was awesome in the first two Smash games, but much weaker in Brawl), and it sounds like they made her even worse. Is Sakurai trying his hardest to make people not want to play as her for some reason?

hopefully some of the buffs given to DK and Bowser end up reaching dedede and charizard.

bigger as well as faster than before,

So he's bigger, faster, and stronger too and he's the first member of the DK crew?

Honestly how did you write that and not end up making a reference to the DK rap.

I'm hoping for a more powerful Kirby. I always play him regardless of how good he is as he is my favorite character and he's the one I've used for the majority of single-player sessions so I know his moves controls real well.

That said, I suddenly realized while doing the latest Mafia game that I am hooked on Animal Crossing in a big, big way still and I really, really, really, really, am looking forward to playing the Villager and it is now my biggest reason for wanting the new Smash games. I hope he turns out to be a blast and (and is secretly very powerful like Meta Knight).

The Smash Bros. fever is upon me!

Don't worry, I'll always have Dedede around so I can "Clobbah dat dere Kirbeh."

Restraint.

The fact that he was able to write it without it devolving into that is a testament to how consummate a professional he is.

If Wolf doesn't come back, Zero Suit Samus will definitely be my main since she was the only other character I was decent with in Brawl.

You know, I do like King Dedede. I've been able to play Kirby: Return to Dreamland with a friends a couple times and I always take King Dedede when we've done it because I just want to play as a big penguin with a large mallet and smash things. My favorite thing about Kirby 64 is the couple times you can play as Dedede and smash things with his mallet. I don't know why I like that so much but something about it is pure awesome.

I can't believe they are making Kirby more powerful.  I always thought Kirby was one of the stronger characters in all the games.  Brawl he was perhaps weaker.

I felt Samus was really good in the original, but Melee and Brawl seemed weaker.  Link has never been bad, just pretty boring.  Him and Mario are just sorta average players...and not that fun to use.

Kirby was only one of the strongest in the N64 game.  In Melee he was one of the worst where his attacks were way too weak combined with his lightweight status made him basically worthless in that game.  Brawl buffed a lot of his attacks which made him a decent character again but he was still no where close to as strong as his N64 counterpart.

My wife used Kirby well in both Melee and Brawl...but in Brawl he seemed too powerful.  He is one of the hardest characters to kill, specially in Brawl.  You basically have to send him to instant KO to kill him, because he will come back from any normal launch.
